Your tank, valves, and manifolds are among the most important pieces of gear in your scuba diving kit. Let’s take a closer look at how they work, the different types, and other crucial information.

Understanding Scuba Tanks

Also referred to as your diving cylinder, your scuba tank holds all of the highly pressurized gas you will breathe as you dive. There are two main types of scuba tanks: aluminum tanks and steel tanks.

Aluminum Scuba Tanks

Aluminum tanks for scuba diving are usually a bit less expensive than their steel counterparts. They also weigh less thanks to their thinner walls. This weight savings unfortunately also means that aluminum tanks are less durable and can’t withstand as much internal pressure.

When an aluminum tank is full, it’s actually negatively buoyant, so it helps you stay below the surface. But as you use up your air, the tank will want to float.

Steel Scuba Tanks

If you have a bigger budget to work with, you may want to consider a steel scuba tank. Steel tanks are much more durable and they have thicker walls. As a result, they can accommodate gas at a higher pressure, allowing you to typically take longer dives with a steel tank.

Steel dive tanks are also more prone to cumulative damage from the salt water, so you should regularly check and service your tank to manage corrosion and rust.

Scuba Tank Capacities

A scuba tank’s capacity is measured in cubic feet. A standard-size tank is 80 cubic feet, but you can also choose tanks as small as 23 cubic feet all the way up to 133 or 149 cubic feet.

Scuba Tank Valves

Your scuba tank valve connects your tank to the first-stage regulator. There are three common types of scuba valves: J valves, K valves, and DIN valves.

J valves are the most traditional style and have been around the longest, though they’re far less common than they once were.

K valves are the most common type of valve—especially among American divers—because they’re incredibly easy to use.

DIN valves are used most often by European divers. However, they’re gaining popularity around the globe because they’re more dependable at greater depths than other types of valves.
