How are Underwater Metal Detectors Different?

Underwater metal detectors are specifically designed for use in an aquatic environment. Their sensitive electronics are protected by waterproof housings and their components are rated for use in environments with increased pressure conditions. If you plan to dive with your metal detector, make sure it’s rated for your intended depth.

The two most common varieties of underwater metal detectors are pulse induction (PI) and very low frequency (VLF). Many divers prefer PI detectors for use in saltwater, but you can also use VLF detectors in saltwater as long as they have a saltwater setting.
