How do Scuba Regulators Work?

Scuba regulators generally work in two separate stages. The first stage takes the highly compressed breathing gas from your tank and reduces the compression to an intermediate stage. The second-stage regulator fits into your mouth to deliver breathable gas as you dive. It takes the intermediate pressurized air and reduces it to a pressure that’s safe to breathe.

What is a Balanced, Unbalanced, and Overbalanced Scuba Regulator?

A balanced regulator can supply consistent airflow no matter how deep you’re diving or how much pressure there is in your tank. Balanced regulators make it easy to breathe throughout your dive in any environment.

Unbalanced regulators feature a simpler design, but they’re harder to draw air from as the tank pressure decreases or depth increases. Overbalanced regulators increase air flow as depth increases.

How Often Should I Service my Scuba Regulator?
