Love this pack/carry-on. Only two glitches.

This is my primary carry-on. The Westwind Teal is rather bright, but hard to misplace/forget. I cover it with a black bag drawstring bag or raincover when I need to make it nondescript. I LOVE the padded wings. My major complaint of backpack carry-ons was that everything always settled to the bottom. NEVER happens with the wings on the Porter 30. MY TWO WISHES would be for Osprey to "over produce" the shoulder strap for the Transport Global bag in Westwind Teal (even the other colors) and offer it as an accessory for the the Porter 30, as well a color matching Daylite Plus bag. PLEASE!!!!... The generic shoulder strap, and Daylite bags just don't coordinate.

Practical and Stylish Travel Backpack

I did a lot of research before purchasing the Osprey Porter 30. I needed a travel bag that was going to be convenient for short trips involving urban travel (subways, trains, turnstiles, stairs and planes). This bag did not disappoint. I like the structure of the bag with the high walls. The u-shaped zipper allows you to completely open the bag for easy packing. The compression straps/straight jacket secure your belongings in place and make the bag more compact when not fully packed. Lots of space and convenient compartments. If you know how to pack right you can easily get at least a week's worth of necessities in there. You can hide the straps which makes it easy for stowing and going through security checks. It is very comfortable to carry as a backpack or as bag. Lots of convenient and comfortable handles by which you can grab the bag and go. Additionally, it's backed by the Osprey Lifetime Guarantee. I absolutely love the Osprey Porter 30 and look forward to my adventures sporting this bag. My friend saw my bag and loved it. She bought one too!

Perfect for my month long trip

I used this bag when I spent a month hopping around Europe. With the help of a couple space compression bags, I fit a months worth of clothes, shoes, and small souvenirs. This a perfect bag to use as you 1 carry-on item. The main pocket is huge and acts as a suit case. There is a pocket with mesh pockets to help organize, a shallow front most pocket, and a small top pocket that is surprisingly useful. The bag stayed comfortable the entire trip. This bag has been all over for the past 3 years and it has shown no sign of damage.

Perfect for Travel

I purchased the Porter 30 because my primary need was space and padding to protect camera gear. This pack hits it out of the park! I have carried it on a weekend kayak trip, a couple lake outings, to my marathon weekend, and hiking around Red Rocks in Denver, CO with close to 20 pounds of camera equipment. The pack has some shortcomings on which I will elaborate below. However, overall, I'm glad I purchased the Porter 30 and the pros outweigh the cons. I can definitely recommend it as a solid pack for your next adventure! What I like: -Lots of padding and padded laptop sleeve. I carried my 15" MacBook Pro easily. I had a DSLR camera body and 4 lenses in the main compartment. The walls of the pack as so padded that chances of something breaking are slim. -Straps tuck into pack in the event you need to zip them away at airport security -LOTS of space in the main compartment. You can easily pack for a weekend trip (shoes included!) -Zippered compartment on top is excellent for storing things you need to access easily What I dislike: -Comfort. I am a 5'5", 140lb female. Perhaps it's me (and my gear), but I found this pack dreadfully uncomfortable to carry after more than a couple hours. The bulk of the straps (and the weight in the pack) really pulled at my shoulders, creating a lot of pressure points and fatigue. I carried this on two consecutive hikes, each about 5 hours in length and I was ready to put the pack in the car by the end of the day. -Sweat. The pack doesn't breathe very well and you will be sweating quite a bit where the pack lays. -Accessibility. The overall accessibility into anything you need in the main compartment is poor. I think that's to be expected from a clamshell design. I found myself leaving the top open and the straps undone so I could reach things. This was not a pack that I could spin around and dig in by any means. Anytime I needed something, I had to put it down, search, and put it back on.

Great EDC bag!

I have used the Porter 30 over a year now and it has been a great EDC bag. This pack is versatile with the compression straps allowing you manage your items easily and carry what you need with some extras if you like. The one thing it is missing is a water bottle holder opposite the side handle. Even though it missed this one thing, I would buy this bag. It was held up well as I expected every Osprey product.

Rebuttal to negative review about chest strap....

The chest strap is adjustable, designed just like the majority of packs. You just have to be smarter than the pack, friction holds it in place pull it where you want it on both sides.

Poor chest strap location for females

After much research I decided to buy this bag as a carry-on option. I really wish it was closer to 40L in capacity since the 30L was a bit too small and 46L too big. Once I pack my hiking boots or large DSLR camera space is limited. My biggest complaint is the location of the chest strap on females. It is placed directed over the breast which crushes the breast. Not above or below the breast. WHY??? This seems like such a basic design consideration, how did a major brand of Osprey make this huge mistake for females? For this one reason I have to return the bag. The straps are a bit uncomfortable at times but otherwise the bag is well made and attractive.

Almost Perfect Travel Companion

I had a bit of a revelation as I was walking around the airport and want to put this into perspective. Comfort is relative. I have a Granite Gear Taku that is my EDC -- this bag has adjustable straps and load lifters that make the bag very comfortable (it is just too big to fit under the seat of a plane). So as I was walking around the airport with my Porter 30, wishing I could further adjust this bag, I realized that this is a very big difference between hiking backpacks and travel backpacks. If you are used to using a hiking backpack, this may not be the most comfortable bag you have ever used. That being said, I was able to breeze through security and wander around the airport while waiting for my flight without the hassle of a wheeled suitcase with a bag that was comfortable. So that is a major bonus.

Great travel backpack for a few days away

Got this about a year and a half ago. It is great for a few days of light travel. I've taken it to Florida, Texas, and Vegas and it has been great only having this one bag to worry about during travel. It isn't super comfortable to carry on your back for a long time but it isn't unbearable. I carried it on my back through two different trains and made the long walk from the orange line to the terminal at Chicago midway and was okay. It is easy to pack leisure clothes, however I haven't found a way to neatly pack a sport coat in it. It would also be nice if the laptop sleeve was against your back.

Good pack. Great Size. Tons of features

I did a lot of research to select a pack that would fit Air China's insane carry on bag restrictions which were 21'x15'x7' on my trip to Thailand and Myanmar. I found the Osprey Porter 30 to be the only real option. The pack is light at 2.2 lbs and has tons of compartments. I was able to fit my 15' Mac Book Pro, a 200 page training manual, 3 rolled up pants, 4 T-Shirts rolled in 1 gallon compressed freezer bag, 5 pairs of socks and boxers compressed in 1 gallon freezer bag, 1 light rainjacket, 1 suit coat rolled, 1 book, 1 Bible, 1 Toiletry Bag 12' x 1' and Travel Documents. Pros- For once I really feel organized. They have a place for everything. I love the hidden compartment on the top where you can hide travel documents/money/valuables. The main compartment opens flat which allows me to access anything I need at anytime without making a mess. The compression straps allow a tight clamp to make things smaller when you need to. They also allow for safety in the sense that they limit access to zippers without unbuckling them. Speaking of zippers...Very solid. Work well. The main compartment and laptop compartment have two sets of zippers that would accommodate a small lock. Cons- The shoulder straps dig into my shoulders under the weight of the pack. I've tried the waist belt and it does help a bit. Prefer if they could add a more cushion to the straps.
