Questions & Answers

Doug L : Will the Oceanic compass module fit into a Suunto SK7/SK8 compass boot?darrick c : Hello Doug, they are the same size, so it should fit into that spot.
JEREMY P : Will this fit in the back of my Oceanic Max-Depth SWIV Combo Gauge? (opposite/back to the depth gauge) There seems to be an empty area on the back that this would fit.STEPHEN S : I do not want to definitively say yes because I have not added a compass to my unit but I think that this module will fit.JAMES M : Hi Jeremy, Yes, it fits perfectly fine and completes the SWIV nicely.JANALEE T : Yes it does. That was my set up. love it
Shopper : will this model fit in veo console?ABDULAZIZ A : Oceanic SWIV Compass Module is a replacement for several VEO consoles. For further information contact the technical support in OCEANIC web site.LAURENCE G : Yes, you have a screw to unloosen, then insert the compass and tighten screw back up. I have over 150 dives with this same set up.JON L : I have one in mine it works well.
MICHAEL F : Dear Sir or Madam: Reading the owner's guide for the SWIV console with pres./depth gauges on the one side-Would this compass mount where the computer would mount on the rear? I am not entire comfortable with the oper. of my OCI compass in switching from dive mode.LAURENCE G : The compass mounts on the opposite side of the pressure/depth gauge. You do need twist the console when you go from compass to press/depth gauge, but you get use to it. I've done about 150 dives with my Oceanic SWIV w/ compass and it's never let me down. Easy to mount also.
ROLAND W : when installing this compass in the Oceanic SWIV console what direction is the red line supposed to face ?ROLLAND F : The red line is your luber line or direction of travel. I would suggest you hold your consol in the natural position that you would use it and position the line ti be straight ahead for you. This keeps the line of travel in your natural forward position and should provide you with better use.MICHAEL N : The compass should be set so that the red line goes along the long axis of the SWIV module or in line with the small window that lets you see the numbers of the compass. This red line always points in the direction you are heading. Set the rotating bezel/dial on the heading you want and if you keep the north arrow aligned with the north on the bezel you will be on that course. Basically it is set parallel to the direction you are pointing when using the compass.JEFF K : I installed mine perpendicular to the console. When I am holding it in my hand and navigating I am following the red line. JAMES M : That's your lubber line, when you're using the compass, you want it to be parallel to the direction you're moving. So, for some folks, it may align straight up and down in the mount and for some it could be turned slightly, it all depends on how you physically hold the compass when you're using it for navigating.KENNETH D W : I put mine facing straight in front of me (direction of travel) and compass can tell me if I stray away from that path stay on the correct heading.CLIFFORD H : The line should be oriented front to back.NICHOLAS U : lubber's line n : a fixed line on a ship's compass indicating its heading The edge has a red line you can look through, face that towards you, and the top line along your heading direction.ED S : That's the "lubber line". The compass should be installed with it in line with the long axis of the console. A compass installed on a ship will have the lubber line pointing toward the bow. It's just a quick reference to tell you what is straight ahead when you are using the console to navigate.

Oceanic SWIV Compass

This compass works like other dive compasses but the teardrop shaped North pointer makes it very easy and quick to find North on the compass face. Highly recommend.

Works

Used it for my AOW certification and it worked. The one thing I don't like about is the lobed/wide south pole marker. I prefer a needle because it gives a more accurate visual cue. Of course, you can just look at the degrees and get the same thing. That's my only complaint, overall it works well. O, and it does fit perfectly in the Oceanic SWIV console, as advertised... took me a few tries to get it in straight though.

Compass Thrown Off by Dive Computer

The compass rose is off approximately 60 degrees. When I take it out of the console, and it is not up against the VEO 100 dive computer, it is accurate. As soon as I put them together in the boot, North swings 60 degrees right, making the compass inaccurate and unusable?

Dark water diving.

By Janis B.

Great for dark water.

Many divers take compasses for granted, considering them just an accessory to an overall dive gauge console system. Trying to navigate with a poorly designed or improperly functioning compass can be one of diving's more frustrating events. The design team at Oceanic may have designed the best liquid filled compass available today with a list of features as functional and convenient as every instrument that bears the Oceanic name.

The SWIV is a dual-purpose compass. The convenient side scan window allows quick reference of large, easy-to-read bearing indicators on a luminescent display for gun-sight accuracy. Or, for divers who prefer relative navigation, the ratchet bezel can be rotated easily even with thick neoprene gloves.

The luminous dial of the SWIV is designed with a half black / half luminous graphic to make quick work of compass direction, especially in dim light. The dial rests on a precision jeweled bearing and incorporates extremely strong magnets for super quick response and accuracy. While the SWIV module itself is very compact, the housing has a large vertical interior allowing viewing angles that would stop other compasses in their tracks. The compass bezel has compass headings in 30 Degree numbered increments and indicator marks for every 10 Degree. Bezel has twin heading indicators for alignment of compass course, and a lubber line across the compass face.
