I bought the Sten Long 85cm version. The gun is good but the stock spear shaft and spear tip are worthless. The spear shaft will rust the first time it hits salt water. Also the spear tip that is included has no retainer ring to help with removing spear from a fish. I guess you are expected to only shoot one fish per dive... So, just plan on buying a stainless steel shaft and a good spear tip. I also replaced the string with a good 12 foot auto coil. And the new cocking device is also junk. But otherwise it's a good gun.

This is a great product. I spearfish almost every week and it has been an asset in the rocks. It has a great deal of power however it is loud. Do not store the cocking device in the handle or you will lose it as I did and I had to make a new one. I put mine on my BC with a re-tractor.The instructions were fine no problem.

This is a nice speargun for the money. It is easy to load on low power setting and is quite accurate. The monofilament shooting line that comes with it is a bit short, however. Plus, you need to make sure to double check the factory installed crimps/ferrules on the supplied shooting line. I learned the hard way by missing a shot on high power setting and the shaft reach the end of the shooting line and simply stripped the mono out of the ferrule...bye bye spear. I use this in lakes in Arkansas, so once you drop something, it is gone. But the 58 has decent power, even in low setting. I can put a shaft straight through the head of a 4 lbs smallmouth bass at 6-8 feet range on low power...not bad. The storage for the loader in the handle is lacking. The tabs that hold the loader in fatigue and break off after just a few dive trips. I ended up getting a bracelet to hold my loader. Overall, great gun. I would recommend this to my friends.

I use this speargun in the Lost Coast Region of NorCal. The water is cold and can be rough. There are a lot of cave/rock outcroppings in the areas that I frequent. This gun is a little longer than my Omer, but still gets in the tight spots where I like to hunt. I replaced the stock lanyard on it with a coiled JBL type because it does not behave well in cold water. I am hoping it lasts as long as my Omer did (10 years). If you put the full amount of air in it when new, it is rather difficult to load at the surface for free diving but loads quickly and easily at 40 ft.The only reason it doesn't get a 5 star rating is because I had to get rid of the sub optimal lanyard.

I have used this wee gun about 4 times now, I was quite impressed with its power for its size. On the first trial run I bent the stainless steel spear (which I had bought as an extra) while trying to load it, I must have accidentally moved the safety onto the "on" position, and for this reason the spear just bend when I pushed down on in. Like other reviews have mentioned, the instruction manual that comes with the gun are not very clear but with a little patience you can figure it out. The other thing which lets this gun down is the holster, it does not stay in place. I have resorted to ditching the holster and keeping the gun in my catch bag. The size of the gun makes it really handy, you can have it in your catch bag and hardly notice it. Good for when gathering shell fish and see a yummy fish lingering around.

I fish Northern CA to Carmel. I love this gun. While the tip is completely use that comes with it, purchase a new one Stainless and your in business. This gun is deadly accurate. Have taken Hundreds of Rock Cod, Greenling, Ling Cod, Cabezon at close range to 10 feet. The 70cm gives you a little more range. Love it

Good snapper gun at close range around ledges and holes. Use with a powerhead and you can kill much larger things within range. [...]

Great gun, needs to be pumpted up to take fish of any size. The metal shaft & tip are worthless. Don't use them. Get a good tip and SS shaft.

I use this gun in inland fresh water. The small size helps me get into tight spaces, while still knowing I've got the knock-down power. I bagged a 18 Lb Catfish with this gun right out the box!!

I have a 100CM super sten, and while the gun is fast and easy to load, it's also got some maintenance issues. The seal leaks around the power reducer, so almost every time I take it out, as soon as I switch the power reducer around the rocks to get in close it starts leaking little bubbles and won't stop no matter if it will is switched to full power or discharged and reset. It's an o-ring thing, but I have only had it out 8-10 times and it did it on the 4th time. [...] they are difficult to maintain on your own unless you have the tools. Loads well, but not maintenance and beginner friendly.

This is my first speargun - the mini mini sten.. I read all of the reviews I could find and thought this sounded the best for my needs. I haven't used it yet to shoot fish, only discharged it twice in the water after my dive. It seemed to shoot fine, I guess, but my issue with this gun is the holster and leg straps, which are HORRIBLE. Both of the cheap rubber leg straps broke before I even got into the water the first time I tried to use it. I tried tying the pieces back together, because I really wanted to try it out, but every time I made a new knot with the straps, they just snapped again. The next day I replaced the straps with nylon strapping and little clips similar the ones on your BC or fins. This was a good solution for about [$], but the next time I went in the water, the [*]holster wouldn't stay in place. No mater what I did, it just kept sliding down my leg (wearing a wetsuit) and ending up dangling around my ankel. It was a constant and very frustrating source of aggravation. And quite dangerous, I might add. Do you need this kind of distraction when your 20 metres down? I don't. I coudn't attach it to my calf, because when it is loaded with the spear, the shaft sticks out about 6 inches past my foot - which would be ok in the water, but would mean I'd have to carry it into the water before putting it in the holster which just can't be done in most dives for obvious reasons. Also, the gun doesn't fit very well into the holster after you wrap up the rope that keeps the spear attached to the gun. All in all, this seems like a well built gun, but I am very, very surprised and disappointed with the whole leg strap/holster design and materials. If you are going to make a good, high quality speargun, why would you provide cheap straps that break the first time you try to strap it to your leg??? It blows my mind that Mares would do something so stupid.

I added a laser on the top and a UK 1.5 watt light on the side of the barrel. It is now a lethal tool with better than 90% hit. The shaft and the tip are cheap, so I need to replace them with better kinds. After about 15 shots, I need to add about 30-40 pumps. I wished I could find the pressure gauge for this gun, so I pump it accordingly. Very good for 18-24 (in) fish, but larger ones can break free.

I have not used the Mares mini yet but I have used a larger Mares. I love it. I believe these guns capable of penatrating through larger species than Bass and Walleye but a different system of attaching the spear might be in order. I use the trident coils and they work great for my needs. I have never shot a speargun prior to my purchase of these two Mares. The first four shots were bullseyes. I was impressed.

Excellent gun for small fish. I used to hund fish in our local lakes. The only thing I would like to improve, is to have a stainless steel shaft instead of regular one.

This is a good all around gun. I have a 70cm and hit all types and size fish. The gun is maintenance free and I pumped only once after 2 years of use, it only took 3 pumps after all that time. I love the fact it’s easy to load and has minimal recoil. The shaft fly’s fast and accurate. Yes a band gun is quieter but this blows it away in power. By the time your prey hears it usually it to late. It works for me and is my primary gun. Happy hunting and good eats.
