Questions & Answers

Shopper : Are there any safety stop warnings, timers, as in 50' and 15' ?Robert F : It has a safety stop warning at 15 feet/5 meters, with a timer that counts down.
jose manuel p : Where is the MARES Service in USA? To which address I send my dive computer ? Thank youWilliam P : You can send it to any Authorized Mares Service center. Or to us
jose manuel p : When you are not diving, should the computer be turned off or what should I do to keep it in perfect condition ?John C : it does not turn offMuhammed K : U can not turn it off. U can only switch to diving mode when u are in water. I've had mine for two years and when not diving it works great as a regular watch and is still in perfect condition.
jose manuel p : Can you just jump in the water and dive with it, without setting any profile ?Francisco C : Before diving with it for the first time, you only need to adjust your settings: time/date, salt or fresh water, any altitude adjustments in case you're not diving at sea level, gradient, alarm preferences, etc. You don't need to use it to plan your dive (although of course planning your dive in advance is a good practice) - the depth/temp/time profile is recorded as you dive with it, it is not pre-set.Heather T : Yes you can.MITCH W : Yes, it has an autodive feature that sense when you are under water and it begins to track your dive. It’s a great computer, a little on the big side, but does everything you need. I never setup a profile other than what kind of air or NOX I was using.RONALD S : You can just dive with it as it will use default settings but you'll not be taking advantage of the very robust usefulness of the dive computer. However, if you're diving for example, a Nitrox mix and not straight air, the computer will be inaccurate for your dive profile. It's easy to set up. You'll have to set the time anyway (it's a watch too), and since you're right there in the settings section, you might as well set up the rest. It's super easy.
Chris W : Does it have a freedive setting?ROBERT R : Yes

Great dive computer

Has a watch like feel / size Great multifunction display that provides a lot of info (better than the Sunnto watches) Downside- battery life is only like 3-4 days (then drops to about 2 days) so wearing this as a "normal" watch 24/7 doesn't really work- more like a smartwatch / iWatch where you need to recharge about once a day. Upside - it's rechargable and only takes abt an hr plugged into a USB connection to get up and running.

Mares New Matrix Air / Nitrox Wrist Computer Watch Review - Scuba Gear Reviews

This is truly an incredible dive computer. Very easy to use due to the simplicity of functionality. Looks great too as a normal watch. I think the new computers being circulated these days pay too much attention to aesthetics as opposed to functionality that actually works. The Mares Matrix not only looks great, but is also really good value for money thanks to the incredible offers on Scuba.com. This computer is likely to stay with you for many years to come. Fantastic product.... Highly recommended.

Great!!!

It is a computer with a compass. What you need to use a single compass. In addition, it marks the average depth of each dive, as well as the traditional markings of other computers such as water temperature, maximum depth and dive time. The great advantage is that you do not need to change the battery. It recharges at the outlet.

Nice but...

I've owned this watch/computer for 2-1/2 years and have used it on 18 dives, all in the Caribbean. The computer systems are great and the dive profile is a nice touch. Bottom line is that I'm glad I purchased it for the price I got - about 50% of list. I also have a Mares Puck pro that I also like very much. IF you don't need a "dive watch" to wear on land, and you do not care about the dive profile graph, the Puck Pro is a much better value. Two key issues are 1) rechargeable battery and 2) pitch of alarm. The battery must be recharged every other week. If you are using this as a watch, then no big deal. If this is diving equipment that gets brought out when time to go diving, then this can be a big issue. Mares themselves state that letting the battery deeply discharge will reduce its life and I have seen other reviews that indicate functionality can suffer. As for the alarm, it is at a frequency I cannot hear. I am 54 and my hearing has decreased in the upper registers, typical of aging. The first Matrix I purchased went back to Mares for warranty replacement as I thought the alarm was not working. Others in my age group had difficulties hearing it too.

Great BUT...

I have owned this for just over 3 years. When it is working properly it is fantastic and I love it. I have had a few issues, first the compass did not work properly. Second It automatically rebooted to factory settings every time i charged it and lastly a week ago on my 14th of 16 dives in Cozumel it failed completely.Battery would no longer hold a charge and the watch went blank.. I'm told it needs a new lithium ion battery which is a problem in itself. There is only 1 Service centre in North America I'm told so it needs to be shipped to Florida so they can replace the battery because it needs to be soldered in..In this day and age that's just crazy. Mares Customer service is among the worst in the world. If youve ever been on their website to trouble shoot something you will know what I mean..

Very easy to use, lots of good functions. Battery power was an issue at first, but returned it and got a replacement.

Great computer for a great price

I did quite a bit of research before buying, as I wanted a dive computer with multiple functions. This Matrix is the bomb. With 4 buttons, it's easy to access all the functions and menu's. Integrated compass works well in both surface and dive mode. I have used this in salt/caribbean diving so far. Great visibility underwater. Cool dive data and graph after surfacing. Rechargeable with good battery life. And the best part is the software, which you can use as a dive log and download details from the computer. The software shows times in/out, temperatures, depths and times, nodeco times, N loading, and provides graphs for many of these data types. Very cool. Also you can log your pre-computer dives to make a complete dive log. It includes details for equipment, locations, buddies, and plenty of details. So far I'm thrilled with the purchase of this computer. The only thing I would like to see is an option to keep the backlight on longer. During my night dive, the light would go off too quickly to use the compass effectively at night.

Cool watch, great dive toy.

Nifty little toy. I used it on a full charge and it sat through 10 dives with 30% battery left to talk about with the watch running its compass about half the time. The cradle is a small issue to bring about. Nice graph to check out diving profile and quite conservative about safety stops.

Looks great, but compass did not work...

It looks great, all functions except compass worked great, liked the alarms and display, easy to use. Still waiting on replacement though from Leisure Pro, which has been almost 2 wks. Not happy about THEIR customer service on that.

Overall a great computer

Overall, I love my dive computer, despite a few of its flaws. I've dove 50 dives with it in the past year in environments ranging from hour-long, 85 degree shallow patch reef dives in the Bahamas to cold, deeper dives off the coast of Maine. It's organized very intuitively, the dot matrix display is great, the compass is pretty good (carry an analog though if you are navigating) and it just looks like a great computer! It's pretty low maintenance, requiring recharging after 4-5 2 dive days. Cons: Wrist strap is pretty short - I barely got it on my 7mm wetsuit, unlike some of the Suunto disk computers which have massive straps. As such, it's probably not the best if you are diving with drysuits or thick wetsuits. For three days, the computer just refused to turn on, even when plugged into the computer. This happened just once after I left it in the sun too long. 30 dives later, it hasn't misbehaved. I've never had it malfunction underwater, and I believe this was just a fluke. This is my biggest con: while I love my computer, I HATE the charging cord. I can only get my PC and the Mares Dive Organizer software to recognize the computer 20% of the time, and it often resets the time and date when I can get the software to connect. It always charges when I plug it in, it's just that the logbook doesn't always download. Despite these flukes, I love the computer and am happy I purchased it.

Mares, is taking another step into the future with the Matrix Dive Computer. A full-dot matrix high resolution display, tilt- compensated digital compass with bearing function, graphic profile during the dive and multi-gas algorithm make Matrix arguably the most impressive Mares watch-style dive computer ever. A choice of digital or analog time of day display, second time zone and a precision stopwatch, all in a sleek metal housing make it the coolest product to show off with in between dives. Did we mention a 36-hour logbook including dive profile graphs at 5 second sampling rate. The rechargeable battery means years and years of maintenance free use. The charging cradle doubles up as PC (or Mac) interface for downloading dives and for firmware upgrades.

The Matrix has a gas switching function. This function allows divers to use up to three different gas mixtures during a single dive. The computer calculates the decompression schedule accordingly, so that you can take full advantage of decompressing with high oxygen concentration mixes. Smart, intuitive and easy to use, the dive computer software is upgradeable. As Mares continues to introduce new features and functions to its computers, you can benefit from these improvements without needing to buy a new product: simply download the new software release from the Mares website and install it into your existing computer using the dedicated interface.

The Matrix Dive Computer Decompression model is the RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubbles Model) Mares-Wienke 10 tissue model. Computer has a maximum depth display of 492' (150 meters) and is altitude adjustable to 12,100' (3,700 meters). The computer can be use in 4 different modes. On the surface, it has a watch mode. When diving, it can be used in air, nitrox or gauge modes. The rechargeable lithium-ion polymer user replaceable battery will give approximately 10 hours of dive time per charge and has a life expectancy of 500 charge cycles. Computer can be set for use in either fresh or salt water for more accurate calculations. Matrix has audible alarms that can be set for imperial or metric measurements, stopwatch function, daily alarms, a dive plan mode, and ascent rate indicators both graphic and digital.

Computer has a mineral glass face, will show the environments temperature, 12/24-hour clock, and comes with a comprehensive owner's manual.
