Questions & Answers

Angelica C : can this BCD fit women?darrick c : Hello Angelica, yes this would be considered a Uni-Sex style BCD.
LESTER W : Will this BCD accept an octopus inflator?Mario C : From mares, yes.
Ron H : I am looking to purchase the Bolt BC and found where there was an issue with the handles coming off after pulling. Does anyone know if this issue has been reviewed or investigated? If so what was the conclusion of the findings?Nick D : My handle is currently stuck on the BCD. I broke the handle trying to free it. I had to fix the handle but it's still stuck in place. The only way to remove it was to disassemble the wieght pocket. Not very happy with the SLS system. Never had one issue with the old MRS system. Hope this helps,Ernesto M : I have had no big issues with the handles after more than 80 dives. Maybe once, out of water and after a bad manipulation (banging the pocket) it fell apart of the pocket but it was easy to put it back in place.John H : I purchased this BCD only after I investigated claims that the weight compartment handles did not lock in place and would fall out during the dive. What I found out is that there was an issue with the previous model where the weights would fall out. Since there were numerous complaints about this Mares dramatically improved the locking mechanism. I have used this BCD in Search and rescue and some very rough water dives and have had no issue with the weights falling out. I am very please with this BCD.ENRIQUE G : I don’t know if the issue has been reviewed. Mine have that trouble sometimes! Actually happened to me 2 times from 50 dives that I have. I’m happy with the BCD it’s nice BCD. My wife has the PURE and she doesn’t have any problem or trouble with that system. Hope to help you.Dennis O : If the weight pouches are correctly inserted and seated (engaged) there needs to be significant force to remove them. I am thinking the issues noted were more operator error than design flaw.THOMAS K : Not sure you mean by handles, but if your asking about the integrated weight (SLS) system I can comment. My bolt has about 10 dives on it this year. I've only once experienced one of the weights coming loose during a dive. It was at a very inopportune time as well, but I caught it before it was too late. Cant really say if its coming loose was operator error or some fault in the BCD. Now before every dive I really pay special attention when I lock the SLS down, hadn't had an issues sense. That said, I really do like the BCD, but may have oped for a larger size. I have the medium and am 6'1" about 185 lbs, fits but snug on my chest. Let me know if you have any other questions Tom
SCOTT C : what is the smart trim weight positioning mentioned in the description?THOMAS K : The Trim weight pockets are on both sides in the back of the BCD. You can add a 2-3 lbs weights to counter balance. I personally use it quite a bit, keeps you in a better body position. Hope that helpsDennis O : Scotton, Here is the info on the weight system. In short, there are non-release let pockets on the back which can carry weights for trim. The SLS system on the side are release let. Hope this helps. The Slide & Lock System (SLS) weight pockets have sturdy zipper closures and are easy to slide into the BCD even when wearing thick gloves. The SLS is the safest system available and come in weight capacities of 9 lbs. and 13 lbs. (4 kg and 6 kg) weight capacities. For a balanced weight distribution, the Bolt SLS BCD also has a rear weight trim pockets with a weight capacity of 5 lbs. (2.27 kg). SLS weight and trim pockets will work with block or soft pouch weights.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?Miguel X : Easy to travel with.Daniella R : Good afternoon, I bought a vest order L2018100515011296324 and would like to know if it is delivered until Sunday.

Bolt

Back pad Velcro ripped off after only 15 dives. The trim pocket bottom ripped out by dive 20.

Unnecessarily Bulky

Have used this BCD for around 50 dives. The weight pockets are very rigid and much bulkier than they need to be. The back pad stitching ripped after about 30 dives. The back inflate is nice, but there are more streamlined BCDs out there.

Mares Bolt SLS BCD

I bought the Bolt in February for a dive trip to Roatan in March 2018. Like any other piece of new equipment the was the initial adjustment stage, I had never dived a back inflate before. Did 10 dives with the Bolt, it took the first 2 dives to get adjusted. After that no problems. As far as the problem of pushing forward on the surface I found that only inflating 1/2 full took care of that. I didn't experience any problems with deflating, just pulling on the inflator hose was generally enough with a slight downward position of my legs or rolling slightly over on my right side to get the exhaust valve to a higher position helped as well. Overall a very nice BC to dive, highly recommended.

Not I've expected

I used this BCD in 22 dives, cold and warm water. The design of the BCD forces you to have an almost vertical position while diving. You need to put most of the weight in the front, in order to obtain a proper trim. The SLS system can be tricky, because it can be released with a minimum of effort, and you can lose the entire pocket. It's difficult to release the air while diving, because you need to be in vertical position to do it.

Very good BCD

This BCD is very good. However it takes getting used to a more upright vertical body position required for the air release valve to work properly when the BCD. I have not experienced this issue with other standard jacket type BCDs. I weigh 165 lb (~75 Kg) use 1.5 Kg trim weights on each of the back trim pockets with 1 Kg each in the front slide off pockets for a total of 5 Kg, in a 3mm shorty wetsuit. That makes me very horizontal under water...

Mares Bolt BC with SLS Weight System Review - Scuba Gear Reviews

This is a replacement for multiple ancient BCs (one travel and one jacket) without integrated weight systems. I have taken this out on two lake dives already and am pretty pleased with it. This was my first back inflate BC and the first thing I noticed was the abundance of D rings. The Stainless steel D rings have a slight outward cant to them allowing for easy attaching of items. There are plenty of areas to hang things from the BC but no easily accessible pocks (it does have one rolled up goodie pocket on the right side which would be good for the small treasures you find but its difficult to access). Both shoulder straps are adjustable and have quick release mechanisms. The sternum strap is adjustable for sizing and has a built in whistle but does not adjust for height. The BC inflates well and provides plenty of lift. Unlike jacket style BCs fully inflating this does not squeeze you uncomfortably which means less adjustment at the surface. put it on, snug it up and go diving. The oral inflator works easily but the mouthpiece has an approximate 45¬? cant to it which forces me to bend the inflation hose to the point of kinking it in order to fill the BC manually. The tank strapping mechanism is solid and secures the tank well. The top collar loop stays adjusted and does not work itself loose. This is a big plus for consistently mounting your tank at the right height. The plastic internal frame has lumbar support which is very nice and the plastic grab handle at the top of the frame is thick enough that it allows for a good grip without hand fatigue or feeling it will snap when carrying a fully loaded rig. As for buoyancy, I find it to be neutral. With a full AL80 tank I dive with 2 pounds in the trim pockets to account for me and thats it. The integrated weight system is well identified and during testing I found ditching weight with the SLS system works perfectly - not too hard and not too easy to pull out. The SLS locking system indicator is easily seen and shows green if locked. Note that there is no dumping of the trim pockets. Would I buy this again? Probably. Dive gear is personal, do your research and test it out if you can. If the oral inflator was at 90¬? and it had a more accessible pocket I would have given it a 5.

Great rear inflate BCD

By ROBERT S.

Great BCD. Extremely well built, mid-weight and very ergonomic. Purchased L and I'm 6'1 215. Removable front weights extremely easy to remove and it has rear weight pouches to assist in trimming.

The Bolt SLS BCD is superbly comfortable and streamlined. Great for travel. The Mares Bolt SLS BCD is a giant step in the evolution of back mounted BCDs. The first thing you will notice when donning the Bolt SLS BCD is the perfect fit. This new level of comfort is achieved via special shoulder pads which are longer, pre-shaped and reinforced, and which work in perfect unison with the lumbar suspension system. This suspension system is inspired by the design of modern hiking backpacks; the system avoids direct contact between the body and the tank support. Bolt SLS BCD features 6 stainless steel D-rings for complete accessory attachment. Made of very tough 420 Cordura material, it will endure any exposure you submit it to and hold up to the test of time.

Air-cell is separated from the harness, resulting in unrestricted freedom of movement. The bladder is equipped with bungee cords that will aid in a low profile when it is inflated and facilitates rapid deflation when dumping air. BCD comes standard with 3 pull-dump/overpressure relief valves, one is incorporated into the top of the Ergo Inflator; another is located on the right shoulder and a third is located on the rear lower right. Activation of the valves are made easy with both the upper and lower right valves coming with pull cords and the valve incorporated into the Ergo Inflator is activated by an internal cable attached to the inflator mechanism. Mares Ergo Inflator the standard inflation and deflation control device used in sanctioned training programs. Intuitive use and secure grip. The Ergo Inflator comes standard with a 3/8" threaded low pressure quick-disconnect hose.

Superbly comfortable and stable back buoyancy BC provides 46 lbs. (21 kg) of lift capacity in size large yet is streamline and weighs only 8.6 lbs. (3.9 kg). Shoulder straps with swivel action buckle design, adjustable chest strap and a waist strap are all equipped with squeeze-style" side-release buckles that along with the adjustable cummerbund provide a custom fit and ease of donning/doffing. BCD provides storage when needed with its roll-down cargo pocket. The Bolt SLS BCD has Mares Slide & Lock System (SLS) for weight release. This unique weight integrated BCD provides a visual confirmation of proper weight pouch insertion, so there is no guessing when you do your pre-dive check before entering the water. In addition, the BCD is equipped with smart trim weight positioning for a balanced feel when diving.
