It just works flawlessly!!! If you are one of those people that uses full cave dive equipment to see pretty fish in the Caribbean, so people can see how cool you are, this is not for you. This would be the equivalent of a Glock for pistols, it just works no matter the environment. Not pretty, not flashy, just fail proof

I've used a few regulators and those one has been the best. Easy to tune, never freezes up and we do a ton of cold water diving! Breathes so good!

Very well made, good quality but is feeding too much air, even when you are no breading.. needs to check with the Mares authorized support center.

I have over 80 dives with regulator and works really well in both cold (fresh) and warm waters. It breathes nicely and is super robust. It does sit a little high on the cylinder and takes some time figuring out the good height of your BCD before you stop banging your head on it but other then that, i cannot find a flaw to this thing. I stongly recommend it.

This is currently the best first & second stage that you could possibly own. Performs flawlessly as expected in any diving situation. Breathing is simply rock solid. I have full confidence with this unit no matter the purpose the of dive. Indeed,Authorized for Military Use (AMU) as indicated. Forget about fancy overpriced & overrated rigs.

Best of the best. Very durable military approved first and second stage. Breathtaking rock solid performance at any depth. Never had any issues with it at all.

Great first stage no problems in cold water. Unfortunatly, I do not like the Vortex system. It feed you too much air and in order to stop it you have to push pressure back into mouth piece, this causes jaw fatigue. I don't recommend for others by I blocked the Vortex with metal puddy, now it works fine.

only downside is that it's a bit heavy and once on your tank sits a bit high making it easy to bang your head on it. Once you have mastered the height at which your tank needs to be then you are golden..great reg..

I've used this regulator for around 30 dives, with the last ten being freshwater ice dives. In warm water it has been a fine regulator, likely no different from a standard Mares 22. The second stage does tend to freeflow at the surface if the mouthpiece faces up. I've read that this may be a sign of a perfectly tuned regulator. Under ice, it behaved just as well. At the end of my course, we made a deliberate effort to try and freeze it. A minute of rapid breathing had no effect. It took over 30 seconds of continuous purging before the second stage locked. My instructor was very impressed, based on his experience with loads of other ice ready regulators. With that residence, I doubt it will ever freeze in normal use under ice.

I wanted a highly reliable first & second stage for my Deco bottle when tech diving. The Mares Abyss Navy gives me that comfort, knowing that it is reliable at 165 ft, in +3 C water. I'm happy with this product and will recommend it!

Best over all regulator on the market

The Abyss 22 Navy II is the Mares answer for your challenge in every condition. With careful analysis and evaluation of what happens in cold water, Mares has designed an exclusive product accurately studied to guarantee top performance and reliability under the toughest conditions, including diving under the ice.
The all chrome plated marine brass first stage regulator is a balanced diaphragm design which is environmentally sealed. The diaphragm membrane transmits the pressure changes to the internal mechanism eliminating the need for the surrounding water to enter the intricate mechanism. The benefit of this type of first stage design is that none of the internal parts are exposed to contaminants such as salt, sand, chlorine or pool acids. These environmental contaminants cause corrosion and mineral deposits to form on the internal mechanism deteriorating regulator performance.
The Navy 22 Abyss II takes it one step further with the CWD. These kits further eliminate cold water from entering the spring cavity keeping the water further away from the internal mechanism and not allow the air flow of the regulator to be affected by the cold water.
The Abyss 22 Navy II uses Tri-Material Valve Technology. This patented technology created to optimize performance, safety and reliability. The valve is covered with a hard Polyurethane (PU) and the sealing surface is a layered with a soft PU for a perfect seal. Tri-material (brass, soft PU and heavy-duty" PU) reaches new levels of durability.
Another unique feature of the first-stage is the Dynamic Flow Control (DFC). The DFC system minimizes the intermediate pressure drop during inhalation, making it possible to use a simpler more reliable second stage. No type of manual adjustment of the second stage is necessary due to the consistency derived from a first stage that guarantees a stable flow of air, even under extreme conditions.
All metal technology second stages have superior performance over plastic second stages, especially in cold water, due to the high thermal conductivity that limits the freezing effect. Additional benefits are the improved durability, the longer working life and less dry mouth from breathing compressed air. This all metal second stage is made of marine grade brass and then coated with a special fluoropolymer resin finish on the second stage case and all key components to prevent ice crystals from forming in extreme cold conditions.
The patented mesh design of the second stage cover reduces the pressure of water flowing onto the regulators diaphragm and minimizes free-flow. Even in a strong current it eliminates the need for a knob to de-tune your air delivery system- advance technology through basic physics.
All Mares second stages are a reliable downstream valve design and offer the unique patented Vortex Assisted Design (VAD) system. The air bypass tube conveys air to the mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a low-pressure area in the center that keeps the diaphragm down during inhalation, for very sensitive and easy breathing at all depths. In a strenuous, unmanned evaluation performed by the U.S. Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) the Abyss 22 Navy II surpassed the high qualifications and standards of the US Navy cold regulator testing at 190' FSW (58m) for General Service and in water temperatures below 38 Degree F (3.3 Degree C). Upon the Abyss 22 Navy II's approval by the NEDU, it has now been included in the AMU list (Authorized for Military Use) Approval Number 1.3.16. The regulator 41.34 oz. (1172g), comes with a 1/2" threaded 29.5" (75cm) low pressure hose, has 1/2" UNF threaded low pressure port, three 3/8" UNF threaded low pressure ports, and two 7/16" UNF high pressure ports.
