Assuming you're using the original shaft that came with the gun, you will need the 6mm threaded tips. Regarding the reel, if you want specifics I don't have any. All depends on how much you want to spend for the features. I haven't used one. My dive buddy had one that was basic and it was nice. I personally never had any reason to get one. Hope this helps you out.

Good distance on stock bands but JBL Pro Sling 5/8 X 16 (16 mm x 406 mm) with Blue Coating bands are even better on the gun. I've taken many many many fish with this gun and yet to have any issues. Work horse with out a doubt

Would buy another jbl.

First time out I in the Florida keys I wondered if this gun would be big enough. (I purchased this one to be able to fit in dive bag. ). I put my worries to rest after spearing my first big hogfish. Very effective and perfect for the medium size fish. I added one thing I purchased a different spear point a slip tip. Much more effective.

JBL 38 Special

I like the sturdiness of this speargun. I haven't had an opportunity to use it yet. I do mostly fresh water fishing and I think it will handle everything we will need it to. I will have to make a small modification to connect a lanyard to it so it doesn't go deep 6 while we're fishing.

Great Spear Gun

Great gun.Used to use an explorer 20 but wanted a larger gun. got this gun and has been great ever since. light weight . good range. very powerful. double band is easy to use.

Bottom Line; upgrade the bands. Stock isn't enough, this is an awesome gun to 10ft if you throw some 5/8 bands on it and a nice tip. Needs maintenance after every use or it will not last. Awesome gun if you learn to use it correctly.

Great Beginner Gun

Absolutely fun gun and accurate up to 8ft or so. Speared many many Black fish/Tau tag and shot a few striped bass. Waiting for the Run of bigger fish to try on larger prey.

The spear gun design that started it all, the JBL Magnum series of guns is probably responsible for more speared fish than all other spear guns combined. It's no wonder; as this durable and accurate workhorse features a 1 1/4" (3.2 cm) drawn alloy barrel, corrosion resistant hardened stainless steel trigger, shaft and point. The JBL728S shaft is made from 17-4 spring stainless for durability and long life shaft is 28" (71 cm) in length with a 5/16" diameter. The Handles are constructed of two-piece cast aluminum providing strength and ease of maintenance. The Guns overall length is 36" (91.44 cm).

The Magnum 38 Special, features two 9/16" Hi-Mod JBL214 bands with 302 stainless wire wishbones, one hand safety and trigger operation. Let's get right to the point, these tips are designed to punch through even the toughest fish, penetrating thick skin and hard bone. Constructed of hardened 17-4 stainless with a razor-sharp finish they'll make short work of just about any game fish. Low-profile, stainless wings are quickly deployed and angled to grab tight and hold on. Sliding wing retainer allows for easy removal of fish. Our patented (#4685239) rotating design allows for 360°-degree spin, providing greater holding power, and minimizing the chance of your point unthreading from the shaft because of a fish "rolling" in battle 2-5/8-inch wing span designed to perform even after impact on rock and reef, the JBL843 is a durable workhorse. Each point is designed for low-maintenance, dependability and most important results.

The Gun is equipped with the JBL515 Shock Line. Sometimes we miss or we shoot a large fish and the recoil can pull the gun out of your grip, whichever the shock line will keep you in control. The Guns range is 14' (4.27 meters). Tried and trusted this is one hunting buddy you'll be glad to share a secret spot with. These guns are most suitable for spear fishing among reefs and rocks where heavy penetration is needed but range is not critical. The Gun is totally made in the USA.
