I started out with these back in 1986. I used them just for snorkeling. Then I incorporated it into SCUBA in 1988 because this is all we had at the time. As you can see by the photo I have a plastic snorkel keeper but I also have one of these as a backup. I took one end off so you could see. I also keep some of these in my repair kit. In Cuba back before the First Gulf War and before the detention camp was operating we still had duties. In our off time we would go SCUBA diving. There was unlimited visibility and the water was warm like bathwater. It looked like a postcard. We would snorkel out to where the water had some depth. You didn't go down near the shoreline because of the currents and rocks. You could see the reefs from the surface but the water was so clear you could get your back, neck and any body part exposed from the surface. It was like holding a magnifying glass to your exposed body parts. So we would go down and look at the corals and such. There was plenty of fish to look at. Also, there was a bull shark that hung out. It only went after a game bag once that someone was holding on the surface. There were also whales that would come through the area. Plastic snorkel keepers are nice but I have seen then break in pools and I have heard of people losing their snorkel in murky water. Plastic gets brittle after a while and will snap. It just happens. People don't replace them. Maybe they forget or just keep saying it will last a while longer. Like your gas gauge is on E and saying oh it will go a little longer. The rubber snorkel keeper gives some added security. You can also use it permanently if you wish. they will last a long time. .
