GREG S : When winding up this reel, or any reel, how do you make sure it spools back evenly? Does it do it automatically?MICHAEL W : I have been using reels for 20 years from cave diving to low visibility diving in Massachusetts and other types of diving. I have not found a fool proof reel system and instead, I rely on the motion of my left hand holding the reel to pivot the reel slightly left to right as my right hand winds it in. That keeps the line spooling relatively evenly. It is difficult to get the line prefect and so before an important dive I unwind the line and reel it back in while on land to ensure proper operation on the dive.WILLIAM V : It does not spool back evenly. You need to take care of that manually.MICHAEL C : The manta junior requires you to spool it across manually as you reel it in. Great little reel .... I use it to deploy my SMB when tech divingROGER A : You will have to tilt your hand back n forth to get an even line on the spool.RICHARD A : Never let the line get slack and rotate the reel as needed so the line lays evenly while reeling the line back in . . should not be a problem when ascending slowly.JOEY Z : This reel does not wind back automatically. Great Reel

I use this reel for deep penetration and cross lines for wrecks. The side handle makes it real easy to use, espically turning around in low to zero vis. It is also an easy one to teach wreck students with. I dropped the reel on a tile floor and broke the "winder knob" off. Dive Rite sent me the replacement part the next day. It may be a good idea to keep one or two in your kit.

Primary reel

This is a nice reel in that it will not jam and the I prefer the side winder reel. If I had to spend the money again I would purchase a similar reel from Salvo Supply because it is made of 100%derlin, which is a superior product to hard plastic. My Dive Rite reel has not broken but I know of others whose has.

Great reel, but...

Very nice reel. I prefer the side winding handle over the handle on top. This reel won't jam. The only negative is that the spool is made of a hard plastic, which has the potential of breaking. Salvo supply makes a reel & spool that is 100% delrin which makes it superior to the DiveRite reel.

Well-Designed Reel

Dive Rite made a very well-designed reel with the Sidewinder. Its design allows you to wind up the reel, like a spool, if a jam occurs. I use mine primarily for wreck exploration with the #36 wreck line. The nylon drag screw works simply and very well. With its simple design, I think it is over-priced but it is a high quality product. Make sure you are experienced and have the proper training before trying to use a reel.

North Florida cave diver, Woody Jasper, first invented sidewinder-style reels around 1980. Less likely to entangle than other reels on the market, Woody's original reel was made of aluminum and a PVC spool. The side-handle style of the reel lent itself to exploration because it could easily switch from hand to hand while laying out line. Twenty years later, sidewinder-style reels were popularized in the technical diving community when DIR enthusiasts began using them for paying out line in deep caves at high speed on a Dive Propulsion Vehicle (DPV).

Dive Rite's Sidewinder Series of Reels are designed to be anti-jam by using precision machine tolerances between the frame and the spool making it nearly impossible for the line to slip between the spool and the handle. The Sidewinder Cave Primary Reel with 400' (122m) of 220 lbs (99.80kg) breakage strength and Dive Rite's Wreck Primary Reel with 250' (76.2m) of durable DuPont fiber braided #36-line which has 350 lbs (158.76kg) of breakage strength both with extra-large stainless-steel bolt snap. Both reels have an injected molded polycarbonate spool which is breakage and crack resistant, they come with a stainless-steel axle and high-quality machined CNC aircraft grade aluminum frame which are corrosion resistant. A knurled lockdown screw has a low profile to prevent snagging and is easy-to-use even with gloved hands. Reels weigh 1.37 lbs (620g) and is proudly made in the U.S.A.
