Questions & Answers

Martine C : Could I make other weight like 1/2 pound or 2 0r 3 pounds ?GARY M : Yes, just fill to the level you want.STEPHEN M : Yes, there are lines inside to mold that you can use to make different size weights.SHAWN S : I have done just what you're proposing with good results down to about 2 lbs. Anything less than that and you are better off making a small bar or ingot, as the center portion to wrap around a belt is very fragile. Also, I have made some 5 lb bricks by pouring molten lead in the impressions left my the casting, filling them. I have confirmed all of these weights with a precise scale. Some work may be required to figure out how full to fill your mold to achieve the desired weight.TRISHAN B : Yes, , you can but it might be hard to get an accurate weight on themCLINT O : Yes, you can make any size weight by simply filling the mold to the appropriate level. While getting an exact weight might be difficult you can estimate quite easily.WILLIAM J : Sure, just fill it less. I have a selection of weights like this I made.GUY M : Yes see the lines on the sides of the mold. Thats will guide you in making smaller weights. When making weights if you use wheel weight lead they will weight less than 4 pounds . Do a test run make a weight using the lines and drop them in water. weight them and adjust your pour of led by what you . You may need a map gas torch to keep the lead flowing once in the mold for a smooth pour.JIM P : yes simply weigh your lead before you melt or pour it. I made from 1 - 4.5 lbs max with this moldMICHAEL S : Yes, I made a bunch of 2 pound weights with this mold. The lines inside the mold are in one pound increments (I think) so you can make different sized weights. But of course the lighter ones will be thinner than the heavy ones, just like people.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JACOB T : To cast weights at homeMICHAEL D : I have leftover lead to use for any project, and this is a thing which I want to need in the future. I haven't been diving in a while, so I have to buy equipment all over again. Rolling my own appeals to me.RYAN L : Made my own plaster-of-Paris mold, it was only good as a one off, damaged the mold removing the weight. Decided to stop messing around and just get an aluminum mold.JEFFERY M : So I can make my own weights, they get expensive.JAY G : I had one before, makes good weights. I ended up breaking the one I had. But made a bunch of weights with it before it broke!DOUG B : Best price I found on lineCHRISTOPHER L : Wanted to start a new hobby.Dan P : This should help me make different size weights with the same profile on my belt.MARCOS M : It can be used with different size of weightsGUY N : MOLDING MY OWN DIVE WIEGHTSTREVOR K : Bought this as a way to save money on weights Ive used it several times and am happy with finished product. Melting lead is dangerous be sure to do your research.LOUIS B : I like that when itâ??s not filled with lead that you can whack your partner in the side of the head with it and it makes a sound not unlike a gong.

Nearly perfect

It does its job well enough. Though I don't know it inwas doing something wrong or what though just melting lead in it didn't seem complicated. Anyway, I was not able to get 4 pound weights out of it. It would over flow make a mess, burn things. But making 3lb weights and below, top notch. Didn't come with inwith instructions though how hard is it to melt lead. So the main issue. It was hard to get the weights out,so do some research on a way to do it. We used weber grill spray. Everything came out easy with a few taps from a hammer. When I was beating the weights out without the grill spray, I ended up cracking the aluminum. Luckily my neighbor was able to weld and repair it. Since I got it back and started with the grill spray and keeping everything 3lbs (1.5kg) or below with the spray it's been perfect. If I had known that before hand, 5 stars. Hope this riverview helps.

$$$ Saver

A bit overpriced when considering its purpose and build but hey, it still cost less than some 5lb weights a lot of shops are selling. Pretty darned durable, and fairly easy to get your consistency in weight. Highly recommend purchasing some Frankford Arsenal drop-out release spray to make the going easier (check Amazon). For me, it was worth saving a load of cash for my wife and I's weights. I ended up purchasing a bit of plastic-dip spray for coating the raw lead (for both myself and the environment, nice guy that I am), and it turned out alright, though I would recommend the actual dip over the spray methinks.

Works Well

Works like a champ. Releases best when mold is warmed up, let lead slightly set. Also using a dry release spray.

Great

Had spare lead laying around and just got into scuba...instead of paying an arm and a leg for additional lead I just bought this a poured my own molds...my divemasters were inpressed. The only thing I don't Like is it has a pointed edge instead of a rounded one on the backside, but nothing a hammer can't fix...would recommend!

Great product

Needs a good set up to get good results. Some said the mold should be keep hot, that's true, otherwise, when you pour the lead, it jams in the mold. Keep it in mind when you will do it.

great mold

This mold will pay for itself several times over in one afternoon!!! If you are comfortable casting lead (yes, this can be dangerous) you will be able to transform scrap wheel weights into useful diving weights in no time. I have made enough 3-4 pound weights to last me a lifetime in just a few hours.

mold

This mold was a lot of fun - if you like work projects - great project for a Saturday off. I melted 2 old lead batteries on my propane colman stove with a couple old pans and made 40 lbs of dive weights. Has a little learning curve but overall so easy a caveman could do it. Pretty difficult to get precise weight but I got a good assortment. I tried several times to fill completely full and never got a weight over 3.8 lbs.

Works well, no stick.

Cast about 80lbs worth of weight with this already. Works like a charm. Best to cast one weight first to warm it up, then do the real run. Takes about 5 minutes to cool if you put a fan on it. Only issue is that it can be a little trick to get the weights exactly to the pound, and not over or under. I just weighed everything on a kitchen scale and wrote the weights on the lead with a permanent marker. Saved a ton of money over buying weights in the shop.

Good Mold for the money

easy to expell weights from mold. recommend not rapping to hard when hot, unit could crack. draw back is not leaving a beveled edge on pour side. one should bevel to eliminate sharp edges.

Good mold

Product does exactly what I bought it for. You need a good source of lead to pour, though, I'd suggest a minimum of 40 lbs of hot lead, and warm the mold thoroughly before pouring to minimize wrinkling. Also, a mold release agent, or a thorough candle smoking, as it takes 8-10 good hard raps against a solid object to get dive weights to pop out of the mold. Product is quite sturdy, and I couldn't ask for a better mold for the job, price was definitely fair, too. 100% satisfied with this purchase.

Great Product

The mold is perfect. Preheat the mold while melting the lead (use caution and ventilation of course). We sprayed a little cooking-oil-spray into the mold and began pouring. Once we began pouring we were able to go through 100 pounds of lead truck weights in 4 hours. The mold has reference lines for different size weights. We poured 1.5, 3, and 4.5 pound weights. It all went very fast. After the "sheen" came comes off the lead (it solidified) we simply turned the mold over and the weight dropped-out If the weight wasn't perfect we remelted it. If the weight was stuck in the mold we remelted the lead in the mold and poured it back into the melt pan. This mold could make thousands of weights easily once you get into it... Of course care and safety must be taken as everything is very hot. Welding gloves and fresh-air ventilation are a must.

OK for basics.

Used one of these originally but it developed a crack through the handle and bottom of the mould. Had to discard it.
