Questions & Answers

Shopper : what is the light output of this thing?ROBERT B : Not sure how laser output is measured, but this works well in all light conditions. It works great to point out things to buddy or others both day and night.
Shopper : Can you see the beam or just the dot on the object your pointing at?MICHAEL M : Just the dot you are pointing at. It works as advertised, but not quite as bright as I had hoped. Used it on the first couple of dives prior to going back to the finger pointing method.TODD D : Not really able to see the beam at all (unless the water is really cloudy for the beam to bounce of off), and you can hardly notice the dot unless you know where to look. Very hard to use to point things out to other people.NATALIE M : In extremely cloudy water with a lot of particulate, you can see the beam hitting some of the particulate but in clear water you will only see the dot.JOHN J : It's just like in air. In a smoky room, or dusty in the air, you will see both the beam and the dot. Seeing the beam is called the "Tindle effect." In turbid water you will see the beam bounced off of the tiny partcles in the water--might sparkle. In the Sargasso Sea, visibility about 60 meters, you probably will not see the beam, and it's too deep to see any dot. In Antarctica, under sea ice in October, with visibility about 200 meters, you'll just see the dot. Elsewhere it's in between with regards to the beam.ROBERT H : It depends on the amount of particulate in the water. In nice clear water, you only see the dot. It the water is cloudy (bad viz) you can see the beam.....you really don't want to see it.TERRI S : Not really unless in very shallow water (less then 10 feet).
BILL N : What color is the beam? Is it green, red, or something else?ARDI K : redROBERT H : Red and reasonably powerful. I use it when I lead dives to point out interesting creatures. We have sand dabs that are perfectly camouflaged to the sand bottom. Unless you see them settle, they are impossible to find. If you used any kind of pointer, they would take off and disappear. The laser is a perfect way to point them out to the divers.KUNTAL J : The beam is RED. Good luck with using this under water Laser Pointer, I use it regularly on my dives.TIMOTHY B : Red beam YAN G : The laser is Red.MARILYN D : The bean is red and it makes it very easy to "point out" what you are trying to get your dive buddy to see. The only problem I had with the laser was that an unscrupulous crew actually stole the pointer right off of my BC, go figure. It was a great pointer while I had it and I ordered another one.
Shopper : One more question i for got to ask. If i do get it, like when i take it underwater do i have to like keep turning it off and on so it doesnt heat up?LeisurePro S : No you can leave it on.
Shopper : Can u take the laser underwater in like lakes that arent that clean and wont ruin them? And if u can, will u have to like keep cleaning the lens on it or something? And another thing how durable is it? Does it break easyLeisurePro S : will work like any underwater flashlight and will not require any speacial handeling. Unit is durable.

Don't buy

Leaked the first time I used it despite being aggressively minimal in how little I twisted the cap to turn it off. Left it in Mexico corroding. Then bought the right one - Orca Torch D570 A case of you get what you pay for

Underwater Laser Pointer

Works fine and seems well constructed but it just doesnt seem to have a lot of power. Pretty much useless in less than 15 vis during the day. Havent tried it on a night dive yet (I have high hopes for that...)

Absolute rubbish

I bought this to point out small creatures to Discover Scuba Divers without getting too close. In spite of careful pre-dive preparation it flooded on the first dive - max depth 20ft. I took it apart, dried it out and got it working again. Chanced a second dive - flooded and now completely dead. The beam of light is only effective 3-4 feet away from the object.

what to look for in a laser

No high output lazer can use double or triple A batteries, they don't output enough power. Come on people. They say it can be seen 50 meters. A red laser? At 30 meters all of the red is gone. Go green if you need that range. Find one rated for 5mw, the legal limit.

Poor performance

Used laser for recent quarry dive with 15feet viz; laser dot could be only seen within a 3/4ft range. Beam not visible. 'On' switch did not consistently work; had to tap against hand to work. Would not recommend this product.

The Invisible Laser

If you are in a low light dive you may be lucky to see a tiny red dot at close range (0-3 feet). I can only assume the the designer/engineer of this product never tried it themselves. I am looking into a green laser. I hear that they are 10x more powerful and work well underwater. You can supposedly see the beam line in the water.

visible only in very low ambient light

The beam is very hard to spot if any ambient light is present. Range is very poor. I have taken this laser pointer on three dives and have not been able to find any use for it other than a tank banger! It has limited usefullness at night at close range, but if you can still point things out to your buddy better with a narrow beam flashlight. I am not satisfied at all with this product. On my last use, the laser emitter broke when I twisted the light to the on position.

Not very effective

Great idea, but beam is too weak to be of any use. Nearly impossible to turn-on, unless exercised prior to dive, and o-ring has good lube. It's better to use a high-output flashlight as a pointer.

Greeat for Night Dives

Handy little tool to point out that frogfish that others just can't see! No need to finger point and have your buddy look at you with that quizzical expression on their face!

Good Product

This is great when diving with a buddy you can point at reef creatures without using hand signals or trying to show your buddy what you are looking at.

Invisible Light

I lead tour groups throughout the south Pacific, primarily snorkelers. I bought this item thinking it would work similar to a "lecture" laser pointer. However I was very disappointed with this product. It takes two hands to turn on and off, since you cannot see the red light you are never sure if it is actually on, which may lead to accidentally opening it underwater as it is a "twist" on / off switch. Underwater the bean does not seem to stand out, especially at snorkel depths of 5 to 20 ft. This makes the item completely useless for anything if there is any available light. The only possible time it may prove useful is night dives, or if you are in very dark locations (blue holes, caverns). In the complete dark the beam was visible. Overall I could not say I was at all satisfied with this product. Partially this is due to what my expectations of its ability were.

Wow, coolest toy ever

If only my other gear could be as cool as this lazer pointer. I zip tied it onto my dive light, which allows me to first aim it at my buddy's eyes and then turn it on. It's more of a surprise this way. Now I just need to find a good way to mount it on my spear gun. Bottom line, between this and my Oceanic Datamask I'm set for life.

Not very helpful

I found that this laser pointer was not really helpful in pointing things to my dive buddy. While you could see the red dot, it was not easy to pick the red dot out of the other many colors on the reefs. One major down-side is that you have to twist on/off the light. This means it takes two hands to turn it on/off. It might be more helpful at night, however if you're diving at night, you can easily show your buddy what you're seeing with your regular light.
