Fortunately I have not needed to utilize the safety equipment purchased recently, which is always the hope.Except that is the sponge, which is used on a reuglar basis, and it works for what one uses a sponge for:)

Don't Leave Shore Without It!

NRS is not exaggerating when it claims this paddle float is "the best on the market".  At 6'2" and 225 lbs., foam and single chamber inflatable paddle floats simply did not provide adequate buoyancy for me.  I purchased a competitor's lower priced dual chamber paddle float, but returned it on the same day due to its poor quality.  I then took a chance with the on-line purchase of this safety kit and I am thoroughly pleased with the result.  The quality is excellent. And after inflating both float chambers, I was easily able to perform self rescues.  I highly recommend this product, especially to those of us who are "oversized".

Served it purpose.

Tested the paddle float to ensure it held air with no leaks. The bilge pump received use on several occasions, pumped fine and nothing broke. The whistle made a racket as expected. The sponge needed several saturations to become absorbent as it possible.

Good buy for the bucks

This is a very good combination of necessary safety items for any kayak owner. I looked at a competitor's product, which was a little less money but featured a paddle float with only one chamber. This one has two chambers. In using the float, I only needed to inflate one side -- it worked fine without both being inflated. But the second chamber is a nice backup feature in case the other is punctured or otherwise fails. The float also has reflective borders making it easier to see it in the water. The bilge pump works great and has its own float. The competitor's package included a pump which did not appear to have a flotation ring. The entire kit came with two separate mesh bags with velcro closures, to be used for storage.

NRS Basic Touring Safety Kit

My wife and I have recently taken up kayaking and we tend to pick up those safety and comfort things we feel are essential, like the safety kit. This was a peace of mind purchase for a good price.

Necessary piece of equipment

Used all of these during a kayaking rescue class. The pump and sponge work well. Easily fit under the bungees on the kayak. The float is easy to inflate. Only thing I would change is the draw cord on the float. I would take it off. Just gets in the way. I like wrapping the float around the paddle and using the clip to close it.

Good starter kit

Purchased this kit to equip my son's new kayak that we built. Paddle float and pump are great. I didn't like the sponge as much as my favorite (microfiber covered) one, but it was OK. Didn't seem to be quite as absorbent.

Your car comes with lots of safety features, your touring boat doesn't. The NRS Basic Touring Safety Kit gives you four items that you shouldn't boat without - a whistle, paddle float, bilge pump, and boat sponge. The Nexus Whistle is a pea-less design that is ideal for water environments. It's loud, has a built-in clip and a hole for lanyard attachment. Sometimes, the only way to be rescued is to be heard. Invaluable for signaling rescuers. Boat safely and carry the necessary equipment. Comes with clip and lanyard hole. Whistle measures (L x W) 3" x 0.75" (7.6cm x 1.9cm).

The NRS Paddle Float is the best on the market. Overbuilt for your safety, the NRS Sea Kayak Paddle Float gives you unmatched support for self-rescue. This easy to use compact paddle float serves as an outrigger to stabilize your boat in an unassisted re-entry situation. The huge main pocket easily slips over a paddle blade and securely buckles to the paddle shaft with 1" (2.54cm) webbing and a barrel lock draw cord.

Constructed with a durable nylon outer shell with 2" (5.1cm) webbing grab loop. Dual air chamber design with easy-to-use twist valves provide you with a backup chamber if ever necessary. Reflective tape for additional visibility. Note: To prevent water entry, be sure the air chamber valves are closed until you need to inflate a chamber. This medium size sponge works to remove that unwanted pool of water that manages to collect under your kayak spray skirt. The Boat Sponge can absorb up to 36 oz. (1.1 liters) of water at a time. Paddling in whitewater or the sea, this sponge will lift out sand and moisture from the bottom of your boat that traditional bilge pumps leave behind.
