Questions & Answers

Shopper : What is the diameter of the original band that comes on this gun? The image shows a single band, but the description speaks of two bands. 9/16" seems too thin for the original band.KEVIN F : 20 x 9/16″ Nitro Band
Shopper : What is difference between jbl explorer 22 and jbl explorer 22 lightning?KIMBERLY S : I don't know but I have the jbl explorer 22 and it doesn't penetrate fish. Bounces off. Probably angers them.SLAWOMIR M : I am not familiar with JBL explorer 22 lightning. I don't know what the difference is.
Shopper : I have been using this gun for about six months, i have replaced the bands with 2 new 18s, the same thickness, but im still losing fish, especially larger and faster fish. What size band will give this gun more thrust, and what tip will pierce and hold better?DOMINGO S : hi shopper, I when to the samething you are writing about it and somebody give me a new idea and since that i haven't lose one mnoore finsh since that, the spear of the jbl 22 is to heavy so i changed for another spear that i build by myself.
Shopper : I'm 13 yrs old, 100 pounds and about 5 ft. tall do you think I should get a bigger or smaller gun and are the bands easy to pull back?CHARLES B : With a little practice, I think you can manage. Its all in the technique. You may want to put a second band on the gun as well. I found it a little weak with just the one band. I would not recommend a smaller gun. This is an entry level gun IMO.TREVOR M : I'm 6'3" 220 pounds, I think it's easy. But it all depends on the leverage for you. But it's a good spear as long as you take care of it, and take it all apart after u get home from fishing and clean it. WILLIAM B : This speargun is very user freindly. Every feature is easy to use. Very simple yet effective. I do suggest you purchase the second band if you are going after larger size fish.DAVE B : I dont know about a bigger gun but the explorer could use a little more power. You need to to have spear within a foot of fish to stab through.GEORGE N : The band is very strong. I put the butt in my hip and crank it back. I wouldn't get a smaller gun. The bands will be smaller and leverage to load the band may be an issue. I did not put a second band on my gun. Enjoy.ANDREW S : I think you will be ok but maybe get a different set of bands then the stock ones - they are tough to pull back. I have 24's on them right now, but that's just what the store near me had at the time - some 22's would be perfect I think but maybe at your age/size start with bigger ones just to get used to the process.PATRICIO M : The bands are ok you just have to learn how to do it under water you will find it preatty easy about the size is a really good sizeMIKE B : I think you'll be able to handle it
Shopper : Can you put 2 bands on this gun?CODY E : Yes. I have recently added another 9/16" band to my gun and have had much more luck with reaching father fish and getting the spear through thicker fish. With two bands you can actually use the whole range of the gun effectively. I would highly suggest picking up another band for this gun.JOHN K : yes you can, i have 2 on mineSLAWOMIR M : It will be a tight fit, but I think you can do it. The spear has two notches for two bands and the band holder in front looks like it was designed for two bands even only one is installed.CHARLES B : Two bands are no problem, I currently have two 9/16" bands on mine. The single band is not nearly enough to punch through a big fish.

Excellent Speargun!

I love this speargun for the price, quality, and performance. I have used it on about 10-15 seperate occasions in lakes and rives and I have not had a single problem. It is simple to load and operate and it seems to shoot true each time. I purchased a 2nd band for it, but I only used it once. The single band that comes installed has plenty of power behind it for now.

JBL Explorer 22 Single Sling Speargun

i use this gun in lake mead for small close fish. But it isn't sting enough for large prey. Up to 10 lbs it will penetrate over 10 won't go through

Great gun

This is a great overall gun. The only thing is that it has poor range but that can easily be solved. I simply replaced the 9/16 and out on two 5/8 rubber, it works great after that.I use it to hunt all kinds of fishes like grouper, snapper, barracuda etc.

Hooked on freediving

Great beginner gun. Could use more range. But for around the kelp beds and rocks, reefs or even on the flats it is great. Plenty of punch on the short shots. Easy to load. Very nice price.

As a beginner very nice starter.

Have used this gun in cold water, kelp beds or sandy flat bottoms. Works great, would like to see more range. Plenty of punch though on the short shots like around the rocks or shallow reefs.

Good for beginners

The buoyance is too negative, it's kinda tired when carrying underwater. But it's good enough for beginners and no need to spend too much in the beginning. Replace tip is strongly recommanded. The original tip is not strong enough to hold big size fishes (16" or above)

If you're looking for a spear gun that's big on performance while still leaving a little green in your wallet, the Explorer is perfect. Explorer series spear guns' pack quality features like hardened stainless steel 2-piece trigger, stainless steel spear shaft, and cast aluminum handle onto a compact 1" (25mm) 6063 aerospace alloy barrel for quick target acquisition and fatal results. Same parallel power source and low profile design make Explorer spear guns perfect for cagy fish when the shot window is a split second. At the end of the day it's the fish count that really matters, and nothing stacks them up like the Explorer.

The Explorer 22 is powered by one 9/16" x 20" (7.11mm x 508 mm) Hi-Mod band with 302 stainless steel wishbones. JBL's unique latex formulation and dip manufacturing process delivers radical modulus strength. The power curve increases as bands are stretched for optimum performance. Special anti-oxidants help protect against harmful U.V. rays, prolonging sling life. Gun has a low-profile, pistol grip handle that makes for easy target acquisition.

The Explorer 22 comes equipped with the JBL734SA 34" (86.4 cm) Stainless 17-4 spring steel shaft with a 5/16" (8 mm) diameter, and is hand-tuned for alignment then heat-treated for maximum hardness to reduce flex and provide optimum energy transfer. Gun is equipped with a two-piece stainless steel trigger mechanism for easy pulls and a light weight corrosion resistant aluminum handle. The gun's overall length of 38" (96.5 cm) and has a 21' (5.2 meters) range. The Explorer 22 has a shaft with 6mm threads and a JBL847 Twin Barb Rock Point.

Tip is constructed of rugged stainless steel, JBL's fixed Spear points are a perfect blend of durability and performance. Each point is designed for low maintenance, dependability and most important results. 2-5/8" (67mm) wing span this economical multi-purpose point is designed for increased holding power and 3/8" (9.5mm) standard profile opens a large hole for easy passage of barbs through the fish, one shot is all you will ever need with this tip. Wing retainer allows for easy removal of fish. Point is for medium to small fish. A short-tapered, machine cut point provides enough muscle to withstand rock hits and still punch through skin and bone of even the toughest fish. The Gun is equipped with the JBL515 Shock Line. Sometimes we miss or we shoot a large fish and the recoil can pull the gun out of your grip, whichever the shock line will keep you in control. The Explorer 22 is negatively buoyant and in proudly made in the USA.
