This was a gun I purchased for lake diving. While it is only legal to spear certain types of fish here this gun proved to be more then enough for what I used it for. Its very accurate and very fast with very low recoil (Not that I can compare it as I never owned another speargun.) On the down side I lost my spear first because the tip came off and I wasnt paying attention but other then that it is an amazing little spear gun.

forgot to mention in my other review, this gun sinks after the shot. Both harpoon and the gun will peacefully settle on the bottom in two different places, while you are bagging your fish. Admin, please add this to my existing review

I purchased this gun because my older pneumatic gun Cressi SL Star shaft broke. I needed replacement gun quickly and our local dive shop did not carry anything else but this JBL 20. I also bought additional sling because I figured I might need it. First of all, with one sling this JBL 20 does not have power to penetrate even smaller surf perch at 9 feet. Now, if you add one more sling, it gets only marginally better. Since both slings are using the same channel they are obstructing each other and second sling may be touching the shaft if not properly lined up. Another big problem is that the line of sight is obstructed with loading pad and slings. And there are no aiming provisions, no rear slot or front pin to line up. I cannot properly aim this gun for anything over 1 ft away. I just had my first session yesterday and kept on missing time after time. Frustrating. My understanding that this is a non issue for more experienced spearos. But, this gun is marketed as beginner's gun. Low power means smaller fish, which requires accurate shot placement, which is not there.

Bought this for a friend who was anxious to expand the food he caught from the sea with selective hunting. It is a fairly small, lightweight gun. Inexpensive, and perfect for a beginner. It has a short range, and does not have the power to kill large game, but for fish in the 20 lbs and under range, it is a good gun. I would worry a bit about the long term durability, but I figure it is a gun that most people upgrade from in time.

I am a begining spearfisher and thought I would start off with a cheap gun. bad choice. after 1 dive I got a new gun. the range on this gun is about 3 feet and it has no power. unless you want to be disapointed, go with a different gun!!!

I bought this speargun as my first and I'm a little disappointed. The range is definitely not 12' (as published). It doesn't even shoot 12' with the second band I added. Disappointing. With that said, spearfishing is fun and this gun let's me practice my newfound hobby. Frankly, I'm using it until my new 7' JBL travel polespear shows up. I'm going to let friends use this gun from now on.

The factory tip that comes with this gun only has one folding barb and no retainer for the wing. If you are serious about fishing go ahead and buy a good tip for this gun. Otherwise it is accurate and good for the price and excellent for small fish such as bass, bream and crappie.

This is a nice compact speargun that works reliably and has provided me with some nice Tautog in New England. For any larger fish or shots at a range exceeding about 5-6 ft it just doesn't have the punch, however. It probably makes sense to get something bigger unless you're only going for rather small prey.

Bought the one band version. Plenty of power for bass, bream, etc. The tip only has a barb on one side so if you prefer two barbs you may want to purchase a replacement tip.

If you're looking for a spear gun that's big on performance while still leaving a little green in your wallet, the Explorer is perfect. Explorer series spear guns' pack quality features like hardened stainless steel 2-piece trigger, stainless steel spear shaft, and cast aluminum handle onto a compact 1" (25mm) 6063 aerospace alloy barrel for quick target acquisition and fatal results. Same parallel power source and low profile design make Explorer spear guns perfect for cagy fish when the shot window is a split second. At the end of the day it's the fish count that really matters, and nothing stacks them up like the Explorer.
The Explorer 20 is powered by one 9/16" x 14" (7.11mm x 357mm) Hi-Mod band with 302 stainless steel wishbones. JBL's unique latex formulation and dip manufacturing process delivers radical modulus strength. The power curve increases as bands are stretched for optimum performance. Special anti-oxidants help protect against harmful U.V. rays, prolonging sling life. Gun has a low-profile, pistol grip handle that makes for easy target acquisition.
The Explorer 20 comes equipped with the JBL724SB 24" (61 cm) Stainless 17-4 spring steel shaft with a 5/16" (8 mm) diameter, and is hand-tuned for alignment then heat-treated for maximum hardness to reduce flex and provide optimum energy transfer. Gun is equipped with a two-piece stainless steel trigger mechanism for easy pulls and a light weight corrosion resistant aluminum handle. The gun's overall length of 29" (73.7 cm) and has a 12' (3.66 meters) range. The Explorer 20 has a shaft with 6mm threads and a JBL825 Twin Barb Rock Point.
Tip is constructed of rugged stainless steel, JBL's fixed Spear points are a perfect blend of durability and performance. Each point is designed for low maintenance, dependability and most important results. 2-5/8" (67mm) wing span this economical multi-purpose point is designed for increased holding power and 3/8" (9.5mm) standard profile opens a large hole for easy passage of barbs through the fish, one shot is all you will ever need with this tip. Wing retainer allows for easy removal of fish. Point is for medium to small fish. A short-tapered, machine cut point provides enough muscle to withstand rock hits and still punch through skin and bone of even the toughest fish. The Gun is equipped with the JBL515 Shock Line. Sometimes we miss or we shoot a large fish and the recoil can pull the gun out of your grip, whichever the shock line will keep you in control. The Explorer 20 is negatively buoyant and in proudly made in the USA.
