As you become more experienced with scuba diving, you may eventually decide to invest in your own scuba-gear compressor so you can refill your own tanks between dives. Just like many skydivers prefer to pack their own parachutes, many scuba divers insist on refilling their own tanks so they can make sure all safety regulations are followed closely.
How Do Scuba Gear Compressors Work?
Most scuba air compressors function in four separate compression stages that gradually filter, compress, and cool the air. At each compression stage, the scuba-gear compressor pulls more moisture from the air.
Eventually, the air is compressed to between 3,000 and 5,000 psi and deposited into scuba tanks for storage until your next dive.
Common Types of Scuba Gear Compressors
Scuba-gear compressors are powered by electricity, gasoline, or diesel. Each variety offers scuba divers and diving outfitters unique benefits and considerations.
Electric Compressors
Electric compressors are relatively quiet and don’t require much maintenance for successful operation. Because they need to be plugged in to operate, they’re harder to use on location or from a dive boat. Some models use normal house-current electricity but more robust professional models require commercial electric-service hookups.
Gas and Diesel Compressors
Gas and diesel compressors are easy to use on location. You can operate them from dive boats or onshore. Gas and diesel compressors tend to be noisy and emit exhaust and carbon monoxide, so you have to be careful to use them in well-ventilated areas and protect the air intake vents from the compressor’s emissions.
Accessories for Scuba Compressors
No matter what variety of scuba gear compressor you select, you’ll need some additional equipment to keep your compressor running smoothly and efficiently.
It’s a good idea to stock up on extra filters so you can replace your air filters as often as necessary. If you purchase an oil-lubricated air compressor, make sure to keep compressor oil and oil filters on hand, too.
Trusted Brands for Scuba Gear Compressors
Nothing is more important for a scuba diver than their air supply. To ensure your breathing supply is correctly calibrated for safe diving, it’s important to invest in gear from industry-trusted brands.
Alkin Compressors and Max-Air are two of the top manufacturers of scuba-gear compressors. No matter which model you select, purchasing an air compressor from these brands will give you peace of mind as you prepare for your next dive.
