It’s an exceptionally wonderful experience while scuba diving compared to free diving because you can stay underwater for much longer, thus increasing your chances of spearing something delicious! Yellowtail

These delicious fish are found off the coast of California, mainly around the points just offshore. They’re the kind of fish to give you a good fight, so getting a spear gun with a reel is best. Yellowtail can be found off the Catalina and San Clemente islands in the summer. This type of fish is fantastic grilled with a side of mango salsa.

Hogfish

These are some of the most common fish from Bermuda to Cuba, all over the Caribbean, particularly in the Florida Keys. They’re typically an easy catch, even for beginning hunters. They are deliciously baked with butter and lemon.

Grouper

This fish can be an exciting hunt! They are typically a mixture of apprehensive and aggressive when they approach divers. Usually, the deeper you dive, the more aggressive the groupers get. Grill up this fish with garlic, salt, pepper, olive oil, and Parmesan cheese.

Whitefish

These smaller silvery fish look similar to a yellowtail. They are common in Southern California and especially in the Channel Islands. They’re easily spooked, so a good hunting technique is to go along the bottom below the rocks where the fish cannot see you. Try to pop up near where you saw the fish and get off a fast shot with a pole spear. Roast this tender fish in the oven with cherry tomatoes and basil.

Halibut

These tasty fish are found from Mexico to Oregon and even farther north. They can be found at depths of ten to eighty feet and weigh more than thirty-five pounds. Halibut are often aggressive and can put up a big fight, so it’s best to use a spear with a reel like you would for yellowtail. Spice up this white meat fish with a coconut curry sauce served over baby spinach.
