While colorful arrays of fish or the thrill of touching a piece of history on a shipwreck are a big draw for scuba divers, underwater explorations are not limited to reef and wreck dives. There are also many works of art to be found beneath the waves. Here are five amazing underwater sculptures for divers and snorkelers to discover.
Christ of the Abyss – Key Largo, FL
Sunk in August of 1965, this bronze statue of Christ, arms raised to the heavens, stands in about 25 feet of water 6 miles east of Key Largo, near Dry Rocks. This popular attraction is easy to find, just ask a friendly local.
There is an identical statue off the Italian Riviera near Portofino. This Christ watches over the spot where Italian diving pioneer Dario Gonzatti lost his life during a dive in 1947. Many scuba and freedivers make their way here to pay their respects. These statues are the work of Italian artist Guido Galletti, and there is a third off the coast of Grenada.
Underwater Grotto – Bohol, Philippines
Nearly 14 feet tall, statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus were planted in 2010 as part of an effort to stop illegal fishing practices. The result has been a big boost in divers visiting this spot in the Bien Unido Double Barrier Reef Park.
Amphitrite – Grand Cayman, Bahamas
Not far offshore from the southwest point of Grand Cayman island is a mythical sight. At a shallow depth of about 15 meters you’ll find an image of Amphitrite, the Greek goddess and queen of the sea. This 9 foot tall bronze beauty is the work of Canadian artist Simon Morris.
Museo Subacuatico de Arte – Cancun, Mexico
For the ultimate underwater art experience this site has 500 life size and realistic sculptures to explore. The installation was created by Jason deCaires Taylor, an English artist. Wishing to make an interactive exhibit meant to promote coral growth, the museum can be viewed via glass bottom boat, but scuba diving amid the many statues brings the most intimate connection between art and viewer.
