Scuba diving is an exciting way to explore underwater habitats. Children as young as eight can begin learning how to scuba dive. However, until they turn 15, young divers must adhere to certain restrictions.

At what age can my child be trained to scuba dive?

The essential requirement for a child to scuba dive is to know how to swim and be comfortable in water. Parental approval is also required for a child to scuba dive. A child can start learning how to scuba dive at eight. For these beginner courses, children will learn to use essential scuba gear and clear a mask and regulator. These courses take place in a pool no deeper than six feet.

To dive outside a pool, a child must be at least 10 years old and hold a Junior Open Water Diver certification from PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. To earn this certification, children must be competent swimmers who feel comfortable swimming in open water. The Junior Open Water Diver course will teach them to use essential scuba gear in a pool and open water.

Children aged 10 to 14 must dive in open water with a professional dive instructor or a certified parent or guardian. They are not permitted to dive deeper than 40 feet.

Starting at age 12, children can obtain a Junior Advanced Open Water certification through PADI, which allows them to dive up to 70 feet if they complete the necessary training for deep dives. Children must still dive with a certified adult, even with the Junior Advanced Open Water certification.

After turning 15, children can automatically convert any junior diving certification to an equivalent adult certification or enroll directly in adult courses. Any restrictions associated with junior diving certifications will also be removed at this age.

Conclusion

Teaching children to scuba dive is an excellent way to inspire their interest in marine life while providing them with skills for a lifetime of adventure.
