Mystic, Connecticut: a slice of the New England area’s best. Its location as an old-time bayside town has been steeped in everything from historic tales of seaside bravery to lobster and fishing culture. Aside from its above-water essence, Mystic itself is a very opportune jumping-off point for some of the very best SCUBA and lobster diving the Long Island Sound has to offer.
A lobster dive uses all the skills employed by a SCUBA diver and adds additional hunting skills. Rather than simply observing the underwater environment, a lobster diver uses their time to hunt and catch live lobsters, of which the New England coastline is known to be rich with.
Those hoping to try this much localized hobby don’t have too far to go from Mystic in order to partake — the Long Island Sound laps just at the town’s beautiful sandy coastline. Here are just a few of the area’s best places to SCUBA and lobster dive near Mystic, Connecticut.
Stonington Point
Many offshore divers like to go diving off of Stonington Point because of the array of underwater life here. From crabs and lobsters to skates, bass, and plenty of interesting vegetation, Stonington Point is a big draw. Although the waters aren’t very deep here, the water temperatures are nearly always mild and comfortable to be in.
Brownstone Quarry
For a change from saltwater diving, the Brownstone Quarry provides a very unique and thrilling dive experience. Divers explore the depths of several freshwater quarries and enjoy the underwater courses that are setup for diver exploration, education, and training. In addition, you can see the entire freshwater fish ecology here, unlike many other venues of the area. Brownstone Quarry is a large local favorite.
Fisher’s Island
Not too far into Long Island Sound lies Fisher’s Island. This island boasts many small shipwrecks, as well as deeper waters and a nice array of aquatic life and habitat. If you’re headed out on a lobster dive, be aware that you must take a boat to get here, and the current can become swift at times, so it is important to have strong diving skills.
