Combine freediving’s serene experience, the breathtaking choreography of a theatre performance, and the whimsy of becoming a mermaid. All of those can be compressed into one through entering the world of mermaid freediving. While most think that mermaid freediving is a gimmick, it’s more than just dressing up and jumping into the water. It’s a fully-fledged water discipline! One that requires trainers, certification, and essential skills to even try and step into the fins.

Mermaid freediving tests the limits of your breath control and your athleticism. When doing it, you learn how to propel yourself with a monofin. Don’t get too intimidated, there’s also a fun hint of adventure and magic in learning this art form. So hop in, book your lessons, and prepare yourself as you dive into a unique hobby and glide through the process step-by-step!

Why is mermaid freediving the new wave?

Leaders who saw more than just a party trick and an entertaining hobby revolutionized mermaid freediving into a poolside novelty. In recent years, mermaid freediving has become an art. Today, mermaid freediving has legitimate certification and an impact on the freediving community as a whole. Freediving is stepping up its game in three big waves:

Tech & sustainability fusion

Gone are the days of basic neoprene. Carbon-fiber monofins and eco-conscious silicone or recycled-fabric tails are hitting the decks. These high-tech, sustainable tools deliver powerful propulsion — no flops or faux elegance here. Plus, VR-assisted breath-training programs pair visual immersion with biofeedback to prepare divers mentally before they even hit the water. Imagine practicing a deep dive in your living room before stepping into crystal-clear Amed Bay!

Team freediving and group choreographies

The community’s buzzing about collective depth challenges — teams setting synchronized apnea records, tail flips in harmony, and emergency drills performed as a pack. Think of it as underwater ballet meets safety-of-your-life drill. Freediving’s solo roots are branching into high-stakes group performances, with safety protocols taught across agencies like PADI and SSI.

Diverse leadership and icons

Fresh voices are emerging, especially women and people of color. The Black Mermaid Foundation and PADI’s push for inclusivity highlight instructors like Zandile Ndhlovu, South Africa’s first Black female freediving instructor, bringing culturally resonant ocean tales and storytelling into mermaiding education. Programs emphasize that mermaiding is for all — merfolk, mermen, humans genderless joy beneath the waves.

PADI Mermaid Program: Dive in like a pro!

If you’re dreaming of flipping your fins without flipping out, the PADI Mermaid Program is your golden gateway to the underwater realm of sparkle and skill. This is an actual curriculum created by the world’s most recognized diving organization. As much as you think that you can go straight into it and swim like a mermaid without any issues, you’re only putting yourself at risk of danger without the right training. This curriculum is designed to be as magical as it is methodical, so grab a notebook and make sure you listen!

PADI curriculum program levels

The program unfolds in three tier levels: Basic Mermaid, Mermaid, and Advanced Mermaid. Each level blends solid freediving principles with mermaiding flair. What sets PADI apart from others is that they treat it like an aquatic art form and full-body sport rather than just a quirky thing you can pick up.

  1. PADI Basic Mermaid: This first level covers safety, breath-hold technique, swimming in a tail, and proper dolphin kick form in a pool setting. There’s also a hearty helping of ocean etiquette in the curriculum as well. It teaches you to respect the body of water you’re freediving in — so no touching coral, no chasing fish, and always treat your fellow merfolk with kindness.
  2. PADI Mermaid: After mastering the basics, you’ll train in confined water on monofin dynamics, floating posture, buddy breathing, and learn how to handle emergencies. This is where you start getting used to the ins and outs of mermaid freediving.
  3. PADI Advanced Mermaid: This final level is for those ready to take it to the open water. We’re talking ocean entries, depth drills, rescue routines, equalization, and buoyancy control using weights. You’ll even get to strut your stuff in an underwater photoshoot — learning how to model like a moonlit siren while managing breath, pose, and eye contact (yes, underwater eye contact is a thing).

What’s beautiful is that this isn’t just a program for adults. Children as young as six years old can enroll in these curricula, making it a fun activity you can enjoy as a family. It empowers young swimmers to learn confidence, self-control, and respect for the ocean, all while swishing a sparkly tail.

In short? The PADI Mermaid Program is the sweet spot where fantasy meets foundational skill. Whether you’re planning to pose at resorts, perform at aquariums, or just glide around reefs like a watery deity!

Feel absolute freedom while gliding through water!

Mermaid freediving is a platform where people can enjoy something beyond just the beautiful blue waters. It invokes a sense of euphoria everytime you propel yourself with the monofin and watch the environment shift around you little by little.

If you want to dip your toes into the community and see what it’s like to be in an inclusive and accepting group, consider attending the Mermaid Freedive Summit! We recently sponsored this event as a way to bolster the community at large and expose people to the magical experience that comes with mermaid freediving.
