One of the greatest delights in scuba diving is the opportunity to interact with and observe the tremendous diversity of undersea life. Seeing a small group of colorful fish is good, but how would you like to find yourself inside a huge, swirling mass of shimmering fish as they swoop and shift en masse? These are bait balls, tight aggregations of fish that move much like a flock of birds in flight.

These bait balls are made up of hundreds of individual fish, and make a great defense against predators. Rather than being viewed as several small, tasty fish, an animal like a shark will see the group as one gigantic fish. Check out this fun video for a look at a massive bait ball entertaining some lucky divers in Bonaire.
