While not among the most common problems divers encounter, wetsuit chafing can occur if you use your wetsuit often. Generally not too severe, this chafing causes an uncomfortable, sensitive skin patch or a rash in areas where scratchy seams or edges are in continuous contact with the skin. Fortunately, there are simple ways to prevent wetsuit chafing.

When purchasing your wetsuit, inspect the quality of the seams on the inside and the edges of the neck, arms, and legs. Many wetsuit manufacturers employ methods such as taping or blindstitching to prevent the rough edges from coming into contact with your skin, making for more comfortable wear.

Surfers and triathletes have been known to use commercial balms or lotions that can be applied to the skin before putting on a wetsuit to lubricate areas prone to wetsuit chafing, and there’s no reason they wouldn’t work just as well for SCUBA divers. Another option is to wear a rash guard or skin suit underneath your wetsuit for protection between your skin and the neoprene. Both can be had relatively inexpensively if that is the route you wish to take.

If you have trouble with wetsuit chafing, it is important to take off your wetsuit as soon as possible after you get out of the water. Be sure to always rinse your wetsuit in cool freshwater right after the dive to avoid bacteria buildup in the suit that can lead to skin irritations down the road. Showering yourself right after a dive can also help flush away salt, minerals, and other sediment that can compound the problem.

If you are already suffering from wetsuit chafing, several topical solutions, such as aloe vera, cocoa butter, baby powder, petroleum jelly, or even products designed for infant diaper rash, can help reduce the discomfort. If your rash persists after trying all these methods, it may be time to invest in a new, properly fitted, quality wetsuit.
