The vivid colors displayed by many types of marine life are so often associated with tropical climes, but the cold waters of the Salish Sea, alternately known as the Emerald Sea, harbor an array of colors that defy expectation. Located between British Columbia and Washington state, the Salish Sea is a network of waterways that includes Puget Sound, the Strait of Georgia, and Juan de Fuca Strait. These waters are barricaded from the mighty Pacific by the Olympic Peninsula as well as Vancouver Island, which contributes to the general tranquility of this cold water realm, and thus, a proliferation of marine organisms and plants. Because major port cities like Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, Vancouver, and Victoria lie along the shores of the Salish Sea, diving here is very accessible and will accommodate shore and boat divers alike. Check out this incredible footage of the underwater color palette that thrives in the Salish Sea.
