Florida locals and tourists from around the world gather year-round near Ponce de Leon, Florida, to enjoy the recreational offerings of Vortex Spring. A cold, freshwater spring that links to the Floridian aquifer, this site is popular with SCUBA divers for the crystal clear waters and steady temperature of around 68 degrees, no matter what time of year. The main part of the spring consists of a basin with sloping sides, where groups of carp and other docile freshwater fish can be found in abundance. Vortex Spring is also a favorite for cave divers, as it contains an underwater cave system measured at over 1,600 feet long. Scores of freshwater eels inhabit the cave, and interesting geological formations can be found within. The surrounding park of Vortex Spring offers non-motorized watercraft, rope swings, diving boards, and slides for the spring itself, while other amenities include camping facilities, picnic areas, volleyball and basketball courts, ATV and horse trails, a restaurant, lodging, and changing rooms with heated showers. A full-service dive shop is also located on premises, with various certification courses available. If any or all of your family members are SCUBA divers, Vortex Springs seems like a one-stop shop to make a great family vacation!

Note: Cave diving should never be attempted by those who are not certified to do so. Inexperienced divers put themselves at significant risk by cave diving without experience and training, such as was the case for Ben McDaniel. Remember, safety is our number one concern as divers!
