Getting people to dive in the Caribbean is not a hard sell; most people are dreaming of faraway tropical climes this time of year without any prodding from us! One of the most spectacular aspects of diving in the Caribbean is the abundance of shipwrecks, some dating back to the 16th century. The Caribbean has served as a cornerstone of shipping since colonial times, which contributed heavily to warring between would-be conquerors, as well as looting and destruction by pirates who capitalized on the prevalence of ships carrying gold and other valuables, thus resulting in the loss of many ships over hundreds of years.

While it was not at all fortunate for those caught amid such troubles, modern-day explorers are now fortunate to have many pieces of history to explore and discover throughout hundreds of islands in the Caribbean Sea. They have become bastions of habitat and health for many species of marine life and hold silent stories of adventure and tragedy that have long since passed. Check out this video of the Purini, a WW2 minesweeper that sunk just off the coast of the island of Mayreau in the Grenadines.
