Many beautiful crab species are revered worldwide as delicious cuisine but are even more exciting when observed in their natural habitat. SCUBA divers typically have a different level of appreciation for crabs than most landlubbers and usually delight in seeing these colorful critters underwater. Whether you enjoy their beauty on the reef or your plate, these five colorful sea crab species are a spectacular sight!
Golden Crab
Found in the Gulf of Mexico, the golden crab can weigh up to five pounds. Its name is derived from its rich, golden shell that sometimes appears more tan or cream-colored than golden. Divers in the Florida region will find this species in abundance along the coastline.
Gulf Stone Crab
The Gulf Stone Crab is a seafood aficionado’s delight. Prized for its succulent meat, the stone crab has the unique ability to regenerate its claws three to four times in their lifetime. The remarkable maroon-brown color separates this species from the Florida Stone Crab.
Pebble Crab
The shape of this crab resembles tiny pebbles, lending to its name. Found on coral reefs, these shy creatures will take a bit of vigilant searching to detect. The triangular shape of the body features pointed claws. Some of these creatures can have legs of brilliant orange, while some display distinctive red and brown tones.
Soft Coral Crab
Soft coral crabs are commonly referred to as the candy crab. Located in the West Pacific region, the soft coral crab resides in the crevices of corals. Their diet of coral polyps often closely resembles the pigmentation of the crab.
Orangutan Crab
This crab is a small one, measuring approximately 2 centimeters long. With its untamed, brilliant orange hair, the arms of this crustacean are reminiscent of the legs of the orangutan, even mimicking its movement style with arms swinging wildly.
