The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, separates Mexico’s mainland from its Baja Peninsula, and is considered to be one of the most biologically diverse seas on the planet. More than 5,000 different species of marine creatures can be found at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, including whales, sea turtles, and manta rays. Interestingly, the phenomenal biodiversity of the Sea of Cortez is due to the types of shores that line either side of the sea. Soft, porous rocks have a multitude of cracks and crevices that make perfect homes for many tiny creatures, and the Sea of Cortez lacks for none. Because of its relative proximity to the US and Canada, the Sea of Cortez is a popular choice for citizens of these countries for sport fishing and SCUBA diving. Check out this video of what’s in store for divers at the Sea of Cortez.
