Underwater Camera vs. Underwater Housing

Diving into underwater photography can be intimidating, to say the least. There are many things to learn, but equipment is not the least of them by far. If you already have a compact digital camera you are used to, there are great options for housings that will be compatible. There are also advantages to getting a camera specifically designed for underwater use. So, which do you go with? Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of both options.

Underwater Camera

The obvious advantage of an underwater camera is, quite simply, that it is made to be underwater. Special consideration is given to camera function controls so that the user is able to easily access menus and features without having to fumble around. Often, buttons are large enough to be felt even with gloves on, and they are limited in number so you can concentrate on your subject and not on whether you’re hitting the right button. Many accessories, such as lenses and flash units, are readily available for underwater cameras. If you want a complete setup, there are plenty of great packages to choose from.

Conversely, not all underwater cameras have the advantage of being usable above the surface, and if they are, the quality of your images may take a hit. Depending on the camera, you may find that the technology is not as cutting-edge as a camera not designed for underwater use.

Underwater Housing

An underwater housing can be perfect for someone who is already knowledgeable about their camera and feels comfortable enough with the controls to handle them within the housing. Housings are relatively inexpensive for compact digital cameras, and many housings allow for a deeper depth rating.

However, the disadvantages of housing for a photographer who would like to work with higher-end equipment can be frustrating. Not all housings are accessory compatible, and they can be expensive, depending on the type of equipment you want to use. And, of course, there is the possibility that housing for your particular camera doesn’t yet exist.

Before you commit to one or the other, do some research and pay attention to user reviews. Check out LeisurePro’s selection of underwater cameras, housings, and photography packages for great deals, and start getting those underwater images!
