Featuring many clear freshwater lakes and rivers and bordering on both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Canada has a lot to offer snorkelers and scuba divers. With many natural wonders, unique limestone formations, and a wide variety of marine life, Canada has plenty of great snorkeling spots.
Salmon and Seals at Vancouver Island
Dive into the cool waters off Vancouver Island and swim with the seals. These agile and playful creatures nest on the island and hunt in the surrounding waters, seeming to be genuinely curious about their scuba diving and snorkeling visitors. Come at the right time of year, and you could also get the chance to swim with the salmon. Thousands of these fish make their way through the Campbell River each year, headed for their spawning grounds. The crystal clear waters allow for optimal viewing of these throngs of fish. In addition to several different species of salmon, you might get a peek at beavers, deer, bears, and many more animals that live on the island.
Beluga Whales on the Churchill River
With its mouth at Hudson Bay, Manitoba’s Churchill River is connected to the sea, making it accessible to various marine life. One of the most popular residents is the friendly beluga whale, thousands of which go to the Churchill River Estuary yearly. Visitors can snorkel alongside these gentle creatures or cruise along the surface in a Zodiac. Under the water, you can hear these whales speak and call to each other firsthand. It’s a magical experience that brings whale watchers back repeatedly. These waters are quite frigid, but most tour companies include dry-suit rentals in their tour packages.
Explore Shipwrecks at Fathom Five
One of Canada’s most versatile snorkeling spots is Fathom Five National Marine Park. This park is the first in Canada and features more than 20 shipwrecks. These wrecks are remarkably well preserved, thanks to the cold water environment. Visibility is excellent; some are visible from the surface through the clear waters. The ships consist mainly of barges and steamers, and there are also unique rock formations and overhangs to enjoy as you explore.
