I've seen some mixed reviews on this octo, but personally I love that it it slim and flat! Makes it much easier to keep close/tight against my chest on my BC, without creating bulk on drag (especially since I don't have a 'vest' style BC). In 40+ dives so far, only once have I had an issue with a slight free-flow-- was quickly remedied, and I believe the cause of sand/environment, not an issue with the demand valve. Makes travel easy too!

Bought this because of the slim design and not being a standard shape Octo, but free flows. the purge button doesn't seem to be the best quality... has to be fiddled with in order to stop flow. Other than that, not a bad Octo. Giving it 4 stars only because of the free flow.

Has a free flow issue, had to be tuned. Now it works well.

Warm water Regulator ONLY. Base quality. Would not purchase again and actually purchased a better regulator from my dive shop.

I purchased the regulator to be used on a hookah rig I use for cleaning boat bottoms. It's an easy breathing reg and doesn't leak when working upside down. I have issues with other regulators doing this.

I needed to replace my old octo with a newer more serviceable unit. After doing complete consideration of my needs and where and how I will be using it, I decided this was the one for me. i am a warm water reef diver. The unit came with a light weight hose attached and it is also light weight both are hi visible yellow and the price was right (on sale). I have completed a number of dives with and it worked well at depth with nitrox. Sherwood Thornton Phoenix Arizona .

Found this octo to be perfect for my pony bottle. Easy to use, nice weight and size, I ended up ordering a second one for by backup reg set as well.

This was a great purchase. I love it's size, stowability, and function. In it's price range, there is no better choice!!

Mares quality in a compact package, certainly not a primary 2nd stage but breaths well as a back up. With the bright yellow hose you can stick it in a pocket and still locate it quickly. Also can lay flat against your BC with elastic keepers. Great bargain from Leisure Pro.

This is an excellent low profile octopus. Breathes easy and comes with an excellent holder to help streamline your gear.

It is easy to use because you do not have to worry about the bottom or top left and right when you wear it in your mouth.

I liked the idea of a slimline octopus (bought this as a replacement for an oceanic). Its bigger than you think and heavy - need to secure by the hose as well as the regulator otherwise tends to hand down. During pool work, found it worked well. Particularly with open water students practising buddy breathing for first time (it works both ways up). But have found on two separate occasions (whilst diving) during a random gear check that diaphragm had become dislodged and drags in water - making it practically useless. Wouldn't want a real emergency with this.

I bought this octo to use during my Divemaster program because it seems to be required to teach OW students. As I was inflating my surface marker at the end of a dive yesterday, the purge tab (no purge button; it's a cheap plastic tab) got stuck and it free flowed. I would recommend buying a better-quality octo.

I had bought a used 1st and 2nd stage on here as well as this octopus, I took them in to be serviced after I received them to make sure I was good to go when diving. They said the octopus had a cracked O-ring but it was an otherwise good back up (I had just taken it out of the box after getting it from Leisure Pro)

Its a great little Octo, and for the price it cannot be beat. The hose that comes with the reg is bright yellow and easy to see, however, its very long and stiff. After connecting the octo to my quick release bcd, I also added a second clip to the bottom d ring to hold the hose down to my side. It comes with a little mouthpiece insert and the idea is great, however, it seems to free flow when the insert is in and clipped... the design is nice...fits very slim to my body and I dont even notice its there.

This is a simple slim line octo. It is comfortable and easy to retrieve and the 180 degree positioning makes it a super simple loaner for air emergencies. It doesnt free flow and the purge is easy to use in my experience. I added the Blue reef yellow flex hose and it was a great addition as removed a tone of weight from the rig. The mouth piece plug it comes with is perfect! the plug secures the reg and has loop for attaching to my BCD the octo remains secure and easily deploy-able. It isnt the easiest breather but it is an Octo and performs well as one but the features make it an amazing choice.

Pros: - It's really slim. Once it's clipped on one tends to forget it's there. - The clip they provide is awesome. It holds on tight and gives right in should you need to use the reg. Worked very well in some skills testing for my NAUI advanced class. - Easy to clear. Cons: - Wet breather. Not a big deal since it's an octopus, but it does discourage me from looking into a similar Mares primary. Bottom Line: This was a gift to me to upgrade from the huge Calypso second I was using as my octo. It's great for the job. It's incredibly light and slim and breathes very well. I'm very happy.

attached this to my old aqua lung atlantis first stage (that´s right! rocking the old school) as an alternate second stage. slim, light, visible, foolproof and cheap!. hasn´t free flowed yet (took it on a 4 day diving trip on new years) breathes effortlessly. little warning though: it is bigger than it looks in the photographs. attached the mouthpiece cover to a quick release buckle with a zip tie, lost the cover on the first back entry. (ergo, avoid using zip ties)

I do technical giving using independent cylinders & regs. This is a great left hand reg with good performance down to 50m. Ideal for a twin set.

Great Octo! ...though larger than I imagined from the photos. Comes with a handy keeper! You'll love it.

I have to admit I like this octo. The slim design and side bubble discharge was very nice. Easily deployed but it breathed a little wet for a few minutes. Not a big deal. I liked the side bubble discharge as it did not interfere with my vision the way a dual vent design would when you are in an heads-up position or taking a knee in the sand. I actually like it better than my Scuba Pro R190 for this feature. It gets the job done.

Great Octopus at a Great Price
By Raymond V.
Mares took over the Dacor line and continue to make this Viper design type octopus. Functional for a great price. It is not a primary regulator, but a good low profile octopus that is low weight which is important with all the weight restrictions in travel now.
Great Little Octo!!

This a an octo folks, not a 2nd stage primary reg. The guy from Texas stated gets labourous at 45 ft that he is spoiled and use to the 500 dollar regs. I hope your not using this as a primary 2nd stage. As a backup you can't beat the design. Cheers BA
Mares Octopus MV was created from the experience of the Mares laboratories, directly as a dedicated octopus. Its light weight, minimum dimensions, and characteristically compact shape, make the MV easy to dive with. The special symmetrical shape means the octopus is equally easy to use on the right or the left, for increased safety. All Mares second stages are a reliable downstream valve design and offer the unique patented Vortex Assisted Design (VAD) system. The air bypass tube conveys air to the mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a low-pressure area in the center that keeps the diaphragm down during inhalation, for very sensitive and easy breathing at all depths.
Innovative diaphragm design and component layout result in tangible reduction of dimensions. Enjoy unique wearing comfort and easiest handling and storage. Ultralight techno polymer construction is abrasion resistant and affordable, ideal for diving in warm and moderate water temperatures. Mares developed the Superflex hose after many years of testing and research. The results achieved far surpassed the tests required by EN250. Hose is extremely light weight and exceptionally soft, guaranteeing the maximum freedom of movement and reducing jaw fatigue. Hose is bright yellow and measures 39" (100cm) in length. The Mares Octopus MV weighs 12.84 oz. (364 g) with the hose. Regulator is nitrox ready up to 40% oxygen out-of-the-box.
