Questions & Answers

Shopper : Hi, Has anyone tried to put heavier line on this reel, like maybe something like 1/8" rope? Turtles keep cutting the thin line on my current reel and setting my float\flag loose at my favorite dive spot  in Hawaii so I'm trying to find a reel that I can put much heavier line on. We usually tie off the float\flag in maybe 20' to 40' of water so it doesn't have to hold a super long line.Mario C : Hi we have not tried, but sure it would work, it would definitely reduce the amount of line being able to be used but it should be more than enough room for 60ft of line
Shopper : Where is this made?LARRY K : No idea; the quality is high and comparable to other much more expensive reels.KEITH L : The handle says " Made in Taiwan".
Shopper : how much line does this come with ?Kyle T : Is it good for spearfishingTIMOTHY S : When you go to buy it you have to "select size" with a length of either 150 feet or 290 feet.DOUGLAS H : 150 feet
Shopper : Can the Handle be remove?ROBERT A : Yes.VAUGHN P : Yes, it is attached to a bracket by a nut and bolt or two. Can't remember exactly how. I had to remove the handle for my application, so I am certain.ROBERT E : this is not a finger spool, this is a heavy duty tool.BRAD K : Yes. The handle is held on by two bolts. The clip on the reel is attached with the same two bolts so you could remove the handle and/or the back clip.DARREN P : Yes, the handle can be removed. The handle is attached with two phillips head screws and two lock nuts.TIMOTHY S : Yes you can. 2 phillips head screws holding it onRON L : The handle is attached to the reel with 2ea. screws and self -locking nuts with the proper tools it could be easily removedROBERT B : No...plus not worth the buy. I brought a more expensive reel that works better.RICHARD C : Yes - you'll need a Phillips head screw driver and a small crescent wrench to remove 2 screws/nutsBRIAN D : The handle is permanently attached and can't easily be removed
TYLER R : Could this reel be used to tow a dive flag instead of those line holders?JOHN C : I bought it to hook on and tow our flag and float. It works geat and I love it.Jack CJANET A : This is more for a guidance line as in exploring a wreck. It is a bit thin and not as easy to manipulate as a thicker flag line on a flag line holder. With the flag you loop off a few feet of line then put a few back on as you go up and down. With this reel, we wind it out and then all the way back in on the return.LARRY K : Yes, easily so.BRIAN T : yes that is what i use mine for. thanksPAUL M : This is a top quality reel that I've used on wreck dives many times and I don't see any reason why this reel could not be used to tow a dive flag. It has a skip setting which would work great because as you descend the reel will let out line gradually without birds nesting. Hope this helps. Paul.FRANK D : Yes. It has a locking mechanism. I use it for lift bags and it holds me at safety stops so I do not see an issue.RON L : I am sure you could could use the Highland XS Scuba Reel for many things, towing a diver down flag being one: I enjoy this reel every time it is used on a dive.BRAD K : Yes. This is exactly what I use to tow my dive flag. I find it easier and more compact than the plastic line holders. It makes for a great line to attach your scallop bag to with the flag so that it can be hauled to the surface when you are finished..ROBERT W : SureTIMOTHY S : I think that it would work fine... I use it for towing a safety sausage now and then. It's a great reel.

String still unwound against reel

Had this for over a year before I used it. I did find that the string unwound against the reel even being "locked" and was a bit of a mess to after exiting the water.

Great Reel, Great Value

This is a great value. Very easy to use with three spooling positions: fully locked, drag and free wheel. I had no issues unspooling or rewinding the line. Great product especially for the price.

Good idea poor engineering design

I bought 2 of this, one for my son and one for me about 2 years ago. We do only boat dives in Ecuador and the use of a SMB and a reel is a good safety measure. The problem with these reel is that the locking mechanism easily moves to the free or "ratchet" setting if you bump or accidentally hit the reel while diving, I have had to deal with lots of tangled lines in many dives which becomes an annoying problem because the reel suddenly got unlocked and many lengths of the line were dangling and floating around me. I have given up on this reel, I tried many things to fix this problem without success, I am about to buy a different brand this time making shure by checking proven reels used by fellow divers.

Good reel for the price.

Wanted a reel with more line capaity then the 150 foot one I had. Looks good and I like the multi drag/click system. Less likley to let the line run away and end with a tangled mess.

Reely good!

This reel functions well, and is very good quality. I did not give it 5 stars simply because I did find it a little bit difficult to operate with thick dry gloves on. It worked, but the reel rubs against the back of your fingers as you operate it. This makes it a little less efficient than I'd like!

Easy to reconfigure as Side Handle Reel

After running reels in a cavern environment on several dives, I concluded that there must be an easier way for those of us with tiny, size 6 hands, to efficiently and effectively lay line, and hold a flood light, without being so cumbersome. I saw that this reels handle could be detached, so I took if off, positioned it to the side, cut off the excess steel, drilled new holes, and reconfigured my reel to be a Side Handle Reel. I now really love it, and it's so much easier to navigate with!!! I recommend this reel, but also recommend modifying it.

String very weak

Really like the functions on this dive reel but on my first dive i was towing my safety sausage on the surface when felt the string go loose. I looked back to see the line laying on the bottom of the lake. Not sure if it wrapped around something or what but never felt any resistance when the line snapped. Gonna put a heavier string on it.

Scuba Reel

I haven't really used it yet ... but .. the reel has a stick label to signify ... stop ... free run ... and bumpy run ... I am sure that sticker will fall off with use ... Otherwise construction is very good, and it comes with two stainless steel clips already ... so you don't have to go out and get clips before the thing will work ... it is ready to use .. however ... like I said ... the stick on label is sure to come off with use ...

Good Instructor's Reel

I need a reel when I teach open water/advanced open water courses to measure certain distances. There are 3 settings on the reel. - Free release - Skip release (keeps tension on the reel while paying out slack) - Stop There is a hole in the handle to hook the attachment to hold it in place. Very well made.

I've seen better

This is my first reel. purchased mainly based on price and reviews. Seems to work well. Its not made as sturdy as some of the more expensive reels but you get what you pay for. For what little bit i use it I think it will serve me well.
