Shopper : Is this airspool only necessary if I'm adding an aftermarket swivel between my HP hose and SPG? One of these came with my new SPG and it isn't clear to me if I need to insert it between my gauge and hose. I do not have a swivel.STEVEN L H : It goes between your gauge and hose an allows you to turn the gauge where you can read it. It is the reason you don’t need a swivel for your gauge. The only time you would not use it is if you mounted the gauge directly to your first stage.ROBERT H : Needed to seal between an SPG and your HP hose - provides the seal as your SPG turns on the end of the hoseJAMES L G : yes insert the new one.STEVEN Y : Every HP hose connection to an SPG I've ever seen requires a spool with two o-rings. So I suspect the answer is YES you need one to go in between the SPG and the HP hose. Please note there are two types of spools, one as shown in the picture with a flange in the middle and one without. You should look at your SPG to determine which type it uses. These are replaceable items, I usually put a new one in every two years or so, or at a minimum replace the the o-rings on the spool. Hope this helps.KENT D : Yes. This goes between the gauge and the hose. Otherwise it will leak ... big time!

I took the SPG off but cannot get the spool off the hose no matter what I've done (pliers).ROBERT H : Should come out easily - just slides in with the O-ring seal. May be stuck or maybe a non-standard hose with the Air Spool permanently in place. You may need to replace the HP hoseCHESTER P : Should come right out, pliers would even make it come out easier, but it should slide out. Sounds like you need a new hose too. It's corroded in.

Dive saver

I added this to my save-a-dive kit after the spool on my Suunto SPG leaked and needed replacement while diving on Bonaire earlier this year. That turned out to be a good call when my wife's SPG started making bubbles while we were diving in the Red Sea last week. Easy fix for an annoying problem.

Picture and item are different.

The picture and product don't match. If you looking at the picture you would think that the spool is PVD coated or black in color. The item in reality is shiny chrome with two green O-rings. I purchased to see if a PVD coated spool would be easier to clean when I serviced my equipment attached to my HP hose's. To be completely fair the item doesn't say spool is PVD coated in the description. No big deal can always use extra nitrox compatible air spools in my save a dive kit.

Quality part that does its job like a champ

Does exactly what it's supposed to do and looks good while doing it (I presume; I can't see it inside the hose). I had one of these in my save-a-dive kit when my SPG was champagne bubbling, and it only took a few seconds to swap for the one with old o-rings and stop the bubbles. Well worth it!

you need one of these

Keep one of these in your save a dive oring kit. Usually the oring replacement only will do the trick, but if the swivel on your pressure gauge is too corroded, this little bugger is what you need. Ain't been diving in a while? Leaky gauge swivel will sneak up on you. Then you may need one of these.

You just set up your equipment for the first dive of your vacation in Saint Somewhere, as you pressurize your Scuba regulator system you hear air leakage. As you examine, you're rig you find that the source of the leak is your pressure gauge or air integrated computer console. The worst thing that can happen on a tropical vacation has just happen no dive regulator. Don't leave on a vacation without spare parts that can quickly and easily fix a problem.

Between the high-pressure hose and the pressure gauge/computer is a small brass pin with an O-ring on each end called an air-spool. This simple, yet important part can make or break a diving vacation. Don't leave on a vacation without a spare air-spool, why ruin a great holiday because of a few dollars in spare parts.
