Questions & Answers

AARON H : I would just like to add my input to this list of Q's and A's. I've worn mine for about 10 years of diving and it has held up great. Where/ how you wear it is just a matter of prefrence. I am right handed and so I wear it on the outside of my right calf but my dive buddy wears his on the inside of his leg. Now does anyone know if I can buy just a new sheath and straps? Like I said, it's 10 years old and has been on hundreds of divesWilliam P : Thanks much
Bryan P : I am looking for a knife and sheath the can be strapped to my lower leg. Is this a good knife/sheath for this application?JUNE H : This knife can be strapped to your leg. CAS C : Perfect. Have had times 2 years. The right size. Sharp. Quality product. HAL S : This is how I wear it. Knife is really sharp. And has not corroded MARC M : Yes it is ok, to use on the leg.DOUGLAS A : I don't see why it couldn't. I use it for snorkeling but usually attach it to my thigh. I have skinny calves so it doesn't feel as secure as when it's on my thigh. Plus I need to make it really tight on my calve so the straps dangle around. Depending on the size of your calf it should work. It's really just a preference thing.PAUL A : Yes. Also very sharp and sturdy. I have a yellow one, just better visibilityTIM D : It's a good size and the quick release hasn't failed me. I worried about the sheath opening accidentally as I bounce of rocks but it's never failed once. The knife comes apart really easily so you can clean all of it. I dive salt water and all knives rust a little no matter what grade, this one allows me to make sure I can clean the whole thing and get a descent lifespan from the knife.VIRGINIA M : Yes and this is one of the best knives I ever boughtSTEVEN P : I'm a public safety diver and I often dive in black water (zero visibility). I carry several cutting implements and I carry this knife strapped to the inside of my lower right leg. It has a smooth edge, serrated edge, and a line cutter, which are all very sharp from the factory, and it holds its edge very well. It has a full length tang and is easy to take apart for cleaning and drying. The sheath is very secure and it's easy to remove the knife. It's a good knife that I highly recommend.MARK P : Yes!
DEBORAH W : How and where does this knife attach? On the BC? On the leg with straps?. I'm looking for a knife in this price range that attaches to the BC. I don't seem to see in the description, how it attaches. Maybe I just can't see it. Thanks,DebDONALD C : Hi Deb, The knife attaches with rubber straps (included) to the leg. Hope that helps.RODOLF P : Aloha Deb, It's a good knife, and has straps to attach to the leg. Not sure if it can be modified to attach to your BC, or maybe just use zip-ties to attach the sheath to your BC. Good luck and happy diving - Happy Holidays!STEVE J : It attaches via straps to one of your limbs. Two adjustable rubber straps come with the knife. Not sure why you would want one that attaches to the BC to be honest. When you need to use a knife it is easy to remove it from the holster when it strapped to your leg. And easy to put it back. On the BC would be tough to find I reckon. Also risky that you might stab the BC with it when trying to put it back. Hope this helps. My sons and I have one of these Blue Tang knives each, and love them. They come apart so you can clean them too.LEE K : It's a leg-strap style of knife, at least the way I use it.THOMAS F : Attaches to leg via strapsEMIL C : The leg with straps. I am very happy wit this knife...it is a good buyROBERT R : The knife comes wth a nylon/velcro strap that goes above the calf and a rubber strap with quick release that holds the tip to the leg. Works well, but tends to slide toward the front of my leg as I dive prone. That isn't a problem as it is easy to get at with either hand. Can be attached to a BC, but you will have to engineer the fit. Can be made to fit your 2 inch web belt on BC or weight belt 9break out plastic bits). Other positive features are a very sharp and corrosion resistant blade and assembly that avoids any metal-metal contact to eliminate galvanic corrosion and easy disassembly for rinsing salt out of any possible crevice. It is my favorite full-size knife.ROY D : It does have leg straps but I attached it to my BC with zip ties

Good knife.

Feels sturdy and has nice finger grip. Entire knife breaks down for easy cleaning after a dive to prevent corrosion.

Blue Tang Hydralloy knife . sharpest dive knife. Really holds an edge.

This is the best dive knife i have ever owned. Parts come apart for soaking in fresh water and it held a remarkable edge. It is far superior to knives made of 318 stainless steel. The 318's cannot ever have a good sharp edge due to the nature of the stainless steel. 318 ss knives don't rust . Hydralloy can tarnish and needs good care. The ability of the blade to hold an edge outweighs this disadvantage in my opinion. The scabbard does an excellent job of locking the knife securely. Unfortunately , i lost it after years of use. i replaced with a titanium knife, it is not comparable for sharpness. If you want a really sharp dive knife, the hydralloy is your answer.

Great dive knife

Great knife. Easy one hand deployment. Holds well edge. No rust, with simple rinse, after multiple dives. Feels like a real dive knife. Not like the nail cleaners most divers carry nowadays.

you will be happy with this knife

hard to design and make a perfect dive knife, but this knife should please almost any diver. it is made from the right steel, has the right type of serrations, and the right length to be useful. if you want a pointed blade, i think this is an excellent choice.

Love it

This was my first knife and I don't plan to replace it. The grip seems really odd but is very comfortable in use. The blade holds up great and the metal end is great for getting other's attention. My brother has the Tusa Imprex knife which is great in its own right but I love my Blue Tang!

great knife

This is my second Blue-Tang Hydralloy knife. Unfortunately, I lost my first one that I'd been using for 3+ years. This is a great knife. The blade doesn't rust. Sometimes you'll see a small rust stain on the blade, but that's from an internal component of the sheath, I believe. It holds an edge well. My first one freed me of a few monofilament entanglements, and quickly dispatched many fish that I'd speared.

Sweet Knife

Great Knife. The factory sharpening leaves a little to be desired but then i usually hone my blades until they cut you by looking at em funny...Just take a little time with the wet stone and you're good. Holds its edge well and is very easy to disasemble and clean after a dive. Well balanced and easy to use.

great knife, great price.

This is a great knife. I have had other knives, They were all pretty dull. This one can be honed to razor sharp and holds edge well. I have surprised others by having a dive knife sharp enough to really clean a fish. Line cutter and serrated edge both work well, too. Because of stainless steel metal composition, it needs full freshwater rinse after diving to keep rust off. 318 stainless prevents rust better but has a poor edge and hardness. This 420 stainless steel is much better for sharpness. It comes apart so all parts can be cleaned and reassembled easily. Great scabbard doesn't release knife until released by your hand. I have never had knife loosen or fall out. Great straps have snaps that adjusted once, never need re-adjusting to your legs. The snap fittings are rugged and make the knife easy on/ easy off your leg which is best location. (preferred inside of calf so fewer snagging problems). This knife is so good, I still use mine and just bought 2 more as gifts to other divers. You won't be disappointed. The only way to do better is get the $$$ titanium version.

fantastic knife

I just bought 2 for gifts for other people this christmas. I have used this great knife for years and have been impressed in that it is the first really sharp dive knife I have ever seen. New, it can shave hair off of your arm. This sharpness can be maintained and it holds a great edge. This is because of the 420 stainless steel that is used. The 420SS may be more prone to rust than the 318 stainless but 318 cannot ever be sharp and cannot be sharpened well at all. A dive knife is a tool and a blunt knife that won't cut is almost useless. This knife takes a little time to disassemble and rinse well but it is a minor inconvenience for an excellent knife. The new Titanium knives may overall be better but are also a lot more costly. For the price, I cannot imagine a better dive knife than this Hydralloy 420SS model. Also, the scabbard is well designed and I have never had the knife slip out of place. It releases well and easily when, and only when needed. Also, the leg straps are great and need be set up only once. The snaps on the straps are secure and easy to connect and disconnect from your leg.

Great Knife

Great all around dive knife. I normally dive with 5mm gloves on and it takes a few secconds to don. It holds a razor sharp edege and disassembles easy for cleaning. It would have been better with a metal assembly threads instead of plastic one but after 60+ dives it hasnt broken yet... After every dive i take it apart rinse it and spray it with wd-40 and I never had a problem with rusting. Id give it a 9.0 out of 10 due to the plastic assembly/disassembly threads other than that great its great fot the money.

I have had better knives

I haven't used this knife yet..Great Lakes are COLD in December. It is a well styled knife and fits into the scabbard either way. It locks in real securely! Unforunately I dive the Great Lakes which means poor visibility and heavy neopreme gloves. I have had similar knife in the past and know that it will be hard to get at quickly with one hand while wearing heavy gloves. This knife would be fine for light pleasure diving in warm water.

Good knife, miserable sheath

The craftsmanship of the knife is excellent. My only complaint with the knife itself is that it showed signs of rusting when taken apart for cleaning after a week of salt water diving. I recommend taking it apart and cleaning it as the instructions describe because the internal parts of the blade will quickly suffer from rust. The sheath is an entirely different matter. It is plastic, not rubber so its stiff. That seemed good, but it is very poorly built. Mine fell apart during the second dive. The sheath literally separated at the seam because the poorly designed snaps sheared off. This was not a rigorous dive. It was strapped to my inner leg. From its recovery location it must have broken off during a back roll entry. Of course when the sheath separates the knife goes with the part that falls off. We had to do a recovery dive to find it. I zip tied the sheath back together thinking that would make it secure, but the clasp that actually holds the knife in the sheath is very loose and easily lets go of the knife even with a little water resistance. This is a lot of money to pay for a knife you can't keep attached to you. I got a cheap sheath with a knife handle keeper and ditched the UK sheath. If you really want the knife I recommend getting a replacement sheath before using the knife underwater.

This knife works!

This knife is all one piece and works as well as any knife. The release is good but a little hard with thick gloves on. If you plan on diving a lot in cold water where thick gloves are essential, I would recommend a push button from the front.

Excellent value

The Blue Tang is a great dive knife. The knife locks securely in its sheath, yet it is easy to release when needed -- even with 7mm gloves. The attachment straps are comfortable to wear on a leg or arm, or can be removed all together and the knife (with sheath) can be slipped into a knife pocket of a dry suit. Comfortable grip. The knife comes apart easily for cleaning. Though the alloy does resist corrosion better than stainless steel, precautions should still be taken with regular maintenance. A stabilizing knob inside the sheath does scratch the face of the blade. Overall it is an excellent value, especially if you do not want to spend a lot for a titanium knife.

Cheap Knife

This knife is a cheap dive knife and you get what you pay for. This knife rusted after one dive (even after i cleaned it and dryed it). Also, the handle is removable and doesn't stay tight durring a dive. When i surfaced, the handle was about to fall off!

Great dive knife

By Joaquin J.

Great knife. Easy one hand deployment. Holds well edge. No rust, with simple rinse, after multiple dives. Feels like a real dive knife. Not like the nail cleaners most divers carry nowadays.

The Blue Tang Hydralloy is UK's improved take on the classic, multi-functional dive knife. UK patented their own Hydralloy steel for a blade that is both strong and corrosion resistant where most competitors' blades only offer one of those features. The special Hydralloy utilizes a unique blend of metal alloys and proprietary finishing techniques to provide a knife with the strength of 420-stainless-steel, while exceeding the corrosion resistance of 316-stainless-steel. The Blue Tang Hydralloy Knife is built rugged, with a partial serrated edge on one side and straight edge with hooked line cutter for cutting through all types of rope and line. It is the ultimate safety tool.

The knives 5" (12.7cm) blade and a heavy-duty pommel end cap for signaling like a tank banger make this one multi-tool functional knife. The Blue Tang Knife has an overall measurement of (L x W x H) 10.0" x 2.15" x 1.0" (25.4cm x 5.5cm x 2.5cm) and weighs 9.3 oz. (263.65 g). The knife blade has a drop point tip design. The knives, rubber ergonomic handle with extended thumb guard on the hilt fits comfortable in your hand. A quick release sheath has a locking mechanism on it, so the knife won't fall out underwater or stab you. Sheath allows one-hand insertion and comes complete with ozone resistant quick-release leg straps. All this make this the best all-around diver's knife. The knife is available in multiple colors and comes with a user manual.
