Questions & Answers

Shopper : is the beanie small enough around the face so that you mask will seal to your face?Steve S : The opening should be ok for a mask, but if needed, you can simply trim the opening with scissors or a sharp knife to customize the fit.MARK R : Yes ... you can arrange the mask and beanie so that the masks seals. It is a little clumsy, but manageable and much better than freezing!JAMES T : The face opening in the hood is large enough for a dive mask to fit/seal comfortably (to face).RONALD W : YesJOAN B : Works fine with my mask. Like hair, you want to make sure your mask is not caught on the beanie. But I have not found it to be a problem if I am reasonably careful.LENORE N : Definitely! It's not shaped like a hood, which is designed to give some facial coverage. It's really just for your head. It covers the ears, but not much closer than that to the face.JOSEPH C : yes I have no problem with my mask sealing to my face. the hood stays out of the way..BRUCE R : Yes it isMICHAEL G : Yes, this is an excellent hood for warmth, protection from the elements (e.g. rain, sun, wind, or a combination of all). Your mask will have no difficulty sealing.LYNN L : Your question is a bit unclear. The mask seals to your face and the beanie does not interfere. You can always put the mask under the edges of the beanie.
Shopper : what beanie do you recommend for lap swimming? I am often cold while swimming. Which one is warmest, works best in swimming pool? thank youCALVIN R : The hood that is pictured is different from the hood I bought so I'm not sure my reply is pertinent. The one I bought is just OK. It works but for me is just a little uncomfortable in the chin strap. I've mused it for scuba diving. Hope this helps.JAMES T : I use the 3 mm Pinnacle for diving in tropical waters. It provides the warmth and sun protection I need when doing a lot of diving. It was a little uncomfortable when new but very comfortable after a few uses. It should be great for lap swimming. --I lost my first one overboard (off the clothesline) and have ordered a replacement.EDWARD G : These "warm water" beanie hoods should be good for swimming laps. I too swim laps, but I do not use a hood (I am a former competitive swimmer and I go fast enough to keep warm even outside in the winter in Seattle). You will not want a regular diving hood, that would be too much for a pool that is heated.
Shopper : How do you choose a size? Is there a size chart?LeisurePro S : There are a couple estimations you can make. A rough rule of thumb is to get the size hood that matches your wetsuit size. Or, if you know your hat size, you can use the following guidelines: XS = 6.5" hat size, S = 6 7/8" Hat size, M = 7 1/8" hat size, L = 7.25" Hat Size, XL = 7.5" hat size.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?BRAD G : Great price and I think it'll be plenty warm enough for my winter diving in Florida.RODNEY G : ears get coldSTEPHANIE S : Going snorkeling in chilly water. recommended by Leisure pro expert.MATTHEW P : Have 1 already, fits both my wife and I, so getting a second now so we each have one. We have large heads and XL fits well.DAVID B : The warmestBRIAN A : I have a 1.5 mm beanie I use for warm water, but I'm going to be diving the Florida Springs in October and I need something a bit warmer. Pinnacle makes quality wetsuits so I thought I would give their beanie a try.JOHN G : Thinking of using this an extra insulating liner under a hooded vest for cold water diving.CHAD R : it looked to be the best one for me to wear under my dry suit hood and keepme warm on cold waters.LARRY MICHAEL L : I thought it would actually be 3mm - it isn't anywhere near that. More like 1-1.5mm.HEATH M : works great keeps warmer and stops head from burning in sun. Used all year round.

Lousy fastener

I finally had the opportunity to use my new beanie, and its performance was very disappointing. The hook-and-loop fastener (surely not real Velcro) was of poor quality. If I fastened the strap securely enough, it would come undone with minimal strain. And of course if I fastened it more loosely, it allowed water in and didn't provide warmth. Also, the end of the strap was badly sewn, such that it curled and didn't lay completely flat. My previous beanie, an Akona, was of much better quality and stayed securely fastened even after 15 years of use.

Super thin

This really is shockingly thin. I admit I didn't get out a ruler, but I don't see how it can be 3mm - it feels like the barest covering. Didn't try it in the water, so I can't say whether it actually has some miraculous warming properties that are not apparent from looking at it, but this seems unlikely.

Followup Review

In my last review I did not provide any details. I find Pinnacle products to be pretty solid, however this hood was very uncomfortable for me, the chin strap specifically. I returned the item and ordered the Neosport 2.5mm Sport Beanie Cap with an adjustable chin strap which I find far more comfortable.

No where near 3 mm

I was very disappointed to find that this beanie was no thicker than my 1mm beanie that I paid $10 for. The pinnacle is well made but is extremely thin and definitely not 3mm. Most certainly not worth $30.

When a full hood is too much but you need a little something for insulation on your head, this is it. This works great for dives with the a few short drops below the thermocline.

60-degree water; comfortable. 2XL

Pinnacle 3mm Beanie: I am 6'2" tall. The 2XL fit me fine. Not too loose; not too tight. Though I have not seen an XL-size; from the fit of this one; I believe I could have worn an XL as well. I wear a 2XL in a cotton sunhat. I like a hat as loose as possible that stays on and fits. I use this for swimming laps in a swimming-pool in cold weather; maybe 2-days a year. The cap and chin-strap were comfortable and easy to put on. The cap is flexible and soft. The cap covered my ears and forehead. The cap did not fill with water or bulge at the top while swimming. I tested it in spring-time in 65-degree water. The cap kept my head warm for that temperature. I did not have access to lower temperature water. My impression is this cap would keep my head warm down to 60-degrees. At lower temperature it would make it less cold. I have tried a 7mm hood and that was thick, stiff, and overkill for my purpose. For water colder than 60-degrees; I would try wearing two 3mm caps; or a 3mm-hood over this, before trying anything thicker. The cap has a thin feeling; very similar to my 1.5mm neoprene swim-shirt. I have not seen or tried anything 5mm thick.

Great for warm water wimps

I'd had enough of being cold in my 5mm wetsuit in tropical waters so finally decided to try wearing a hood. When I tried it on in the store the fit was perfect, but once wet it felt ever so slightly big. This was exactly the extra bit of neoprene I needed to keep warm. I love that the chin strap doesn't chafe, which I had been worried about as I'd never worn a hood before. It's also great for keeping my long hair tucked away. Size wise, for most the S will be small enough, but if you find that most average sized baseball caps are too big on you (as I do), then you may also find the S, once wet, slightly big. Overall happy with this, good value, and it weighs nothing for something that does so much.

warmth for your noggin

We spent a week on Bonaire during the last month of February. The water was colder than we expected. The Pinnacle Beannie was perfect to add the warmth needed and avoid the discomfort that accompanies the thicker mm hoods. It was recommended by a friend and we both enjoyed the product on every dive.

Perfect for Hawaii

Seemed a little snug on the surface, especially the chin strap, but a Medium fit my wife and M/L fit me perfectly once in the water. Kept away the chill at 76 degrees for long EAN32 dives.

OK for head protection

This beanie hood is OK. It would serve it's purpose for warm water diving. The fit is a little loose (if I went to the next smaller size I'd get a brain squeeze) so exhaled air from the regulator gets caught in the hood and starts pulling on the chin strap.

Comfortable!

Very good construction, good fit. Needed it mostly for warmer water and night dives where a beanie would make the diving more comfortable. Some folks would wear this all the time, even in tropic waters.
