If you want to get a Dry Suit Diver specialty certification, you read the book, answer the Knowledge Reviews, then dive with a PADI instructor who will help you master the skills and check you out.
You don't have to be a "certified dry suit diver" in order to use a dry suit. So if you only want to learn more, then this is a good little book to give you the basics.JASON S : The book is set up in a series of chapters with each chapter having a quiz/review questions.
You would review them with your instructor and then perform the dives acceptably to obtain the certification.JUDY I : There is tests in the book. To get a certification card, you need to go through a PADI professional (dive shop).
You don't need the card for anything, though. I just read the book to gain some knowledge about drysuit diving.
The first dive I did in the drysuit, I went with a couple of divemasters that are friends, and they took me through a few maneuvers.JAMES B : There is no test. Read the book and do the knowledge reviews . You also need to watch the video. Than of course a pool session and 2 open water dives.MATTHEW L : The book does not provide a test or enough information in my opinion to safely use a dry suit after reading. The book provides an overview, but is meant to be used with classroom and in water training. Using a dry suit without proper training is very dangerous. If you're just looking to see if a dry suit is for you it is a good basic read. This book does not include the padi dry suit diver video which is available separately. Call a shop and they may offer a training package that includes both the book and video.TIM V : The PADI Dry Suit Diver Manual has chapter quizzes and a twenty question knowledge review. No test is taken at the shop, just two open water dives.STEVE S : No test in the book or the dive shop. Only a practical at the lake or ocean to see if you picked up the skills.MIKE S : There are reviews at the end of each section as well as a complete "test" at the end of the book. It's a ton of information since dry-suits don't come in just one flavor. It's a great way to get an overview of what's out there on the market. It's all about trade-offs and the book is very good about explaining the issues. The info about how to actually use the drysuit is a bit misleading and I would only take it with a grain of salt. Learn how to dive a dry-suit with a good instructor and many, many hours of experience. I've learned that a dry-suit is quit difficult to master, but worth it in the long run. Bottom line: excellent reference book on materials, trade-offs and overview.KEVIN C : At the end of each chapter there is a small review test that you can take that will help in remembering the important pieces of each section. The actual certification exam must be issued by a qualified dive shop. You will still need to do at least two dives in a drysuit with an instructor to practice different sceneros. I do, however, recommend purchasing this book and doing the exams. Not only will it be cheaper to use your personal book, but you will be able to cut down the class time if you have already read the sectionsLYNN L : You have to get the certification with a shop or other authorized person. This is the book for the course, but you have to do the course with an authorized instructor. The course includes both time in the pool, and an open water dive, in order to get the dry suit certification.TREVOR S : I don't believe there was a test in the book. I don't remember taking a written test for the dry suit course, just had to complete 2 dives with the instructor for the certification. With reference to the Dry Suit Diving , PADI , it is a DVD.
It is like all the other CD's that you get. PADI puts out good CD's .
Their library is extensive. Leisure Pro carries a complete set of books and DVD's. Also I recommend you get Peak Performance Buoyancy it will help.
They make a good private library for any diver old or new. Keep them and review each one before your dives or take them on your trips. All my buddies find reviwing them keeps the cobwebs away.
I hope this helps. Once you dive DRY you will never ever want to go back , even in the tripics.

I bought the manual last July and it does NOT come with a CD or CD-Rom. However, the manual is quite good and will tell you everything you need in pretty good detail. When I did my dry suit open water dives, there was nothing my instructor covered that was not in the book.
