Shopper : Is this a book, DVD, both...?RAY S : Sorry to be so long in replying! It's a book. present for my wife.JOHN O : BookANDREW J : This is just the book. The eBook, Multimedia DVD-ROM, and DVD are also available from PADI.DAWN D : What I bought was just a book.SCOTT T : It is the book form only.YAN G : This item is just the book, no DVD.SCOTT D : It is a book only. You will be very satisfied with your pirchase. This book thoroughly covers all aspects of diving including dive theory and altitude diving. It is a spectacular reference to have
Shopper : I need this book in spanish. It's possible?YAN G : We do not sell the spanish version.MIYUKI S : The Spanish version is not available on the website.CALVIN R : No se. Pregunta PADI o busca en Amazon o eBay . !Buen suerte! CAR
Robert C : I want to start reading about scuba diving and whats involved before i actually commit myself. Is this a good book for that? Thanks RobertKEVIN K : This book is a very good reference manual, I'm not sure it was written as an introduction to SUBA diving, much of the information in this book would be understood better coupled with certification classes. With that said, if you enjoy in-depth studies it a good one.KARL B : Robert, The book does cover a variety of subjects, it covers topics in recreational diving. The book is a good start, but I would recomend a visit to your local dive shop to learn more about local diving and training. Diving is an awesome hobby/lifestyle, take time to make sure it is for you.JOHN G : It is a great book and reference but It may be too much info for a beginner. I would suggest an Open Water Divers Manual.NANCY D : The PADI Open Water manual will give you a better sense of what is involved in learning the basic skills of diving. The Encyclopedia is more about dive theory (physics, physiology, etc). It's used as a text for the dive master course.GRACE T : This is a fairly in depth book about the physics of diving....this is required reading for the divemaster level. If you're a beginner, i would maybe read the Open Water course book...very basic and easy to understand.JEFFREY D : No its not a good book for begginers. Start out with the Padi Open Water boo or The Boy Scout Handbook for Diving. Your local dive shop should have complimentary magaizines that are awesome which have articles for the begginer to professional diver. I have been diving for five years and have read everthing possible on diving. Once you complete Open Water the first book I would read is Diver Down. take ethe advanced course the read the Enclyclopedia. There is also a handbook that goes with that of course purchased seperately. DIVING IS AWESOME!!!! Yours in DivingCOREY O : It is. It is mostly a great reference tool but also describes in depth what the ocean environment is like and how it works. The book also provides detailed info on the physiological effects on the body, the physics behind diving, a good review of equipment specifications and even a good bit on how the planet's water systems work.CALVIN R : If you want to read before doing then this is a good choice. It is a must for any SCUBA library as it is incredibly comprehensive. I still use it as a reference or if I have not been diving for a while and want to freshen up on a particular aspect of equipment, technique, or physiology. Some of the specialty courses require it so if you are going to need it sooner or later anyway why not sooner? If you can, however, I would recommend visiting a local dive shop and seeing if you can try out a little underwater. Many tropical resorts also have a Discover SCUBA experience to give you a taste. Finally, I'd say just go ahead a commit. Diving is an incredible experience and a reward in itself.MATTHEW B : Not really. This is more of the physics and physiology involved in diving it is a good study guide for the dive master exams.
Shopper : what year was it published?NANCY D : Version 3 was published in 2008.KEVIN K : The copy that I bought was published by PADI in 2008.CALVIN R : 2008JOHN O : Published. Sorry for the delay we just arrived home from a trip. Regards, John
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JERED H : Adding to Diving LibraryPam S : Fabulous book! Well worth it to read alongside diving manuals for in depth detailed learning.KEVIN K : good for refreshing.

If you are looking for a science textbook about diving that is more in-depth than your Open Water book this is the one.

Good but not a must have.

It's not a bad book and for the price I still believes its worth to have one if you like diving but it's not a requirement either. I was expecting more details information for the equipment chapter and more diving relevant information in general. The first chapter is more for people who doesn't dive yet but are thinking about it. I found The Chapter on the physiology of diving really interesting.

A Must for every Diver

This is a great and absolutely necessary all around reference for every diver, either experienced or just beginning. Much more detailed than any other PADI course book. Easy to read.

very good - worth it!

It is a very good book. Not a deep encyclopedia for sure, there are likely plenty of better books. But it is an excellent (and better) complement of OW and AOW books.

Rqd for Equip Spec but not in-depth

It's not an encyclopedia and certainly not a technical reference. It's a very general, lightweight (as in depth of information). Nowhere near what is needed for Equipment Specialist. This book however is listed as being "required" by PADI for that specialty but don't bother. It's not that helpful.

Good overview

Provides a broad overview and is a great follow-up to an open water course. However it doesn't have the depth of each subject to really be an "encyclopedia"; I'd call it more of a "Diving 201" textbook without the quizzes. [$] I bought it because a dive instructor I know referred to it as the only good thing PADI ever did!

Knowledge is half the battle

I use this manual as a resource to refresh on physiology, physics and equipment as it relates to diving. When explaining concepts to divers both new and seasoned, I will have them read the particular area of interest and then have a discussion regarding it. This manual grounds the reader in the fundementals of diving.
