Review Summary

The spool is fine, but the SMB is too cumbersome for use at 15-20' stops. I've tried it several times at this depth and it takes a LOT of air to get it going and it always flops over at the surface. May be better for deeper deployments, but I would just get separate spool and 4-4.5 marker if you are not going to deploy often from deeper water.

I got Set 1 as a gift for a diver friend. On the plus side the spool is compact and was overfilled enough that when I removed some line to expose the holes, there was still well over 50' left on the spool. The DSMB looks well made with accomodations for both oral & BCD inflator and the double-ender operates smoothly. I also like the center of this spool is an inverted cone shape (see pic) so the spool is easily held between finger tips. One negative. I liked the idea of the "bright red and yellow safety pocket", but the one I received has a black and grey safety pocket (see pic).

Yes, it's rather large, but it all fits nicely in the pouch which you can tether to your BCD. The sausage is just the right size for getting noticed far away.

Great signaling kit that can be carried in many ways. The carrier is very sturdy and the kit contents are all high quality.

I got the 6ft SMB; it has a valve on it to allow you to fill it using your low-pressure BC inflator. Note: if orally inflating, you still need to push in a metal part before blowing. Because the part you put into your mouth is entirely metal, it isn't great to bite down on it for leverage. The end of the SMB has a clear plastic pouch for sending up a note. There are 2 strips of highly reflective white material at the top. The other end has webbing and a large sliding bolt snap (one eye). The elastic to hold the SMB rolled up is too long but I can twist it several times to shorten it. My favorite part is the finger spool because you cannot stick an entire finger into it (you don't want to do that anyways because or risk of injury). 108' of white line came with it and for once I didn't need to remove line to make it all fit on the spool. Line feeds through the middle of the spool and you knot it (under the line, the spool is smooth, no plastic stopper tabs like other spools I've used). The OMS bag has loops on the back which allow it to be threaded onto 2" webbing/belts/etc. It also has a delrin ring if you want to attach a metal snap to it. It keeps everything together in the water if you want a carrying case for your SMB. I've mainly carried both SMB and reel on my butt D ring (no bag). The included double-ender got a spot of rust on it after its first freshwater dive. I switched it out for a known SS bolt snap.

We recently upgraded our rental and instructional equipment. In doing so we purchased a series of OMS Safety Sets. Each set has a nice SMB, reel and whistle. For our instructional needs and for students to gain confidence in deployment, this is a great set. OMS offers three different versions of the safety set. Highly recommend these to our students as they build their gear bags!

The carrying bag is what sold me and the sale price.

OMS Delivers Once Again
By Doug C.
OMS has an essential accessory for today's diver; the OMS Safety Kit contains an SMB and Spool. The bright red and yellow safety pocket makes it easy to locate by the dive buddy. The safety pocket attaches to any 2" (5.1 cm) webbing or it can be clipped to the front of a BC. A zipper allows for easy access but prevents items from falling out. The 3 different configurations will answer the needs for most divers.
Shooting a surface marker buoy is a skill all new divers learn and all divers use. The Safety I Kit is perfect for new divers and most traveling divers. The Safety I Set includes: A 39.6" (100.6 cm) Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) with a closed bottom and oral/power inflator that works well in tropical locations and conditions with calmer seas. A 50' (15.25 meter) lightweight ABS plastic finger spool comes complete with durable braided nylon line and a BigGrip double-ender stainless steel spring loaded gate clip for attachment to SMB. The kit items come in the included safety pocket.
Make sure the boat can see you by using a taller SMB. The OMS Safety Set II include a 6' (1.83 meter) SMB with an open bottom and one way valve, which is ideal in rougher waters. A 100' (30.5 meter) lightweight ABS plastic finger spool comes complete with durable braided nylon line and a BigGrip double-ender stainless steel spring loaded gate clip for attachment to SMB. The kit items come in the included safety pocket.
Divers possibly encountering areas with more wave action may prefer either the Safety Set III. The Safety III Kit includes a 6' (1.83 meter) SMB with a closed bottom and power/oral inflator which is ideal in rougher waters. A 100' (30.5 meter) lightweight ABS plastic finger spool comes complete with durable braided nylon line and a BigGrip double-ender stainless steel spring loaded gate clip for attachment to SMB. The kit items come in the included safety pocket.
