Questions & Answers

Rachel C : What is the difference between this product and this one - http://www.leisurepro.com/p-mntr1j/manta-rescue-jr-100-305-meters-36-line ?YAN G : This item has either #30 line or #24 line. The other one, MNTR1J has #36 line and the Cave cam.
Shopper : Does anyone using the Manta JR have any experience with, or know anything about the Manta G8 reel? I am having trouble deciding between the two. Is it possible with the Manta JR to hang from a SMB without releasing more line?JOHN F : I have the junior with 250 feet of line. There are notches in the spool to lock it in place but you do not want to put any kind of load on the line or it will imbed in the coils and become a tangled mess. I strictly use it as a breadcrumb trail to get back to the anchor line. Beware with any of these reels, I have had a few, when rewinding them as they have a nasty habit of getting tangled. This reel is the best one I have owned. Just rewind it carefully and watch the line and you will be fine. Good luckMARK E : I am not sure what a SMB is but the Manta JR has a spring loaded. the springs are pretty solid and the reel has grooves in it so the line will not pay out once the handle is in the grooves. It is a good reel.JOHN F : I don't know what an smb is to answer this question. I have my reel about 3 seasons and the line is still perfect. the unit is made very well and still looks and operates like new. the only negative, and this applies to all these reels, is that you have to be careful when you wind it back up or it can get badly tangled. If your sightseeing while you wind it back up lookout. however if you watch what you are doing it works great. I use mine on every dive. I did have to disassemble it once from a bad tangle but it was my fault. I still got back to the anchor line then stuffed in my bug bag.good luck with it.JAMES A : Yes in the manta jr you have to depress the handle pretty good to get the line going. - mine has been attatched to my DMV for 5 years without a problem ever or a free spool and still looks brand new SUSAN L G : Don't know about the G8 reel so can't address your first question, but after a thousand dives with my Manta JR, I can help you with the SMB question. The spring tension and current are the determining factors for the release of line. I replaced the standard cave line on the reel with a flat-line braid. This allows more line on the reel and less absorption of water on a longer dive. I also makes it more likely to slip off a few feet of line easier. So in a stronger current, I do loose line unintenionally. As the reel ages, the springs loose tension, and that also allows line to slip off. I rarely dive in over a 3 knot current and usually stay less than 100ft deep. So the slippage is acceptable for me. Also bought one for my husband who loves his reel. He kept the cave line on, and his is newer, so he has less slippage. Hope the info helps.
ROBERT K : why is there a difference between the specifications and description with regard to line length ?DOUG H : I use my Manta Jr. for lift bags. The line length needs to be able to get from your target depth to the surface. You also need to take into account the current. You may be at a depth of 130' and with a 3 knot current the line will be going diagonally to the surface requiring substantially more line than 130'. I chose the Manta Jr. because I felt that the line length was sufficient and the reel itself is not that bulky considering the quantity of line. If you are looking for a primary cave reel, jump or safety reel I do not recommend this product. There are much more efficient reels and line lengths for these purposes. I hope this helps.JAMES S : Depends on the diameter of the line-If you use larger diameter line the reel holds lees line.TROY Z : They are giving users the option of a longer thinner line or a shorter thicker line. Presumably the thicker line is easier to manage as well as stronger. I opted for the thicker line. For wreck diving it is plenty long. MARK M : the difference is what line you use with the reel. The heavy wreck line takes up more room and can only fit 250 feet as opposed to the cave line that a bit thinner and fits 300 feet. Both types of line are very durable and most recreational divers don't know the difference. The reel is a versatile tool and this manta is top quality. hope this helps
Shopper : Can this one be mount on Mares Cyrano 970?LeisurePro S : Sorry, this reel won't fit the Cyrano. Check out product MRSCR, which is made for the Cyrano.
Shopper : How much line and what thickness does this come with?LeisurePro S : The #30 line is 185 feet and the #24 line in 250 feet.

Good Piece of Kit.

Purchased as fellow divers recommended it and have used theirs a number of times. Easy to use. One gripe, why a brass instead of S/S snap? Other than that, it’s a good piece of kit.

Buy It!

Hands down the best reel I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot of reels. It is well worth the extra cost. I am a marine biologist who dives often and highly recommend this reel.

Great Reel!!

Great reel. The only down side is that the line guide does not touch the reel itself, allowing room for line to come of the reel from the side. Nothing like a little bending does not fix. Overall great product.

Manta Jr reel a good reel for women

Used both in combination when doing penetration for wreck certification, and they were hassle free. There was no need to think about how to hold the light once I got them situated. The reel was easy to let out, and easy to reel back in. We added a clip to the end of the line to make tying off easier. We did take off about 50 ft of line to compensate for swelling when it got wet. And it fit quite well in my smaller hand.

Great Wreck Reel

I bought this reel to dive a wreck where the visability 10 feet. It was easy to let out the line and easy to reel it back in. I bought the "#2 Swivel Brass Boat Snap, Like Dive Rite #1002" to attach to the end of the line and it worked great.

Needs one modification

Used for deploying safety sausage/safety stops and UW searches/wreck penetrations. Requires modification to address issue releasing line while hanging on stop due to lack of alternative handhold - spring release actuation occurs when hanging. Tried fitting with drawer pull handle and formed tubing on clip side. Settled on clipping into 2" seine ring at snap attachment.

Good product

Super product. Only problem was with the UPS shipment which ended up being controlled by french customs, then having to pay extra fees on top of purchased price.

This is one heavy duty reel. Well Made, easy to use, no backlash.... A little on the heavy side but well worth the extra weight. A lot of good features built into this unit.

The Manta Reel: The ultimate in dive reels with features unlike any other on the market today. Constructed from the highest quality materials, it's made to withstand the demands of today's advancing technical diver. Whether it's wreck or cave diving, search and-recovery or underwater surveying, the Manta Reel is the only reel. Manta's most popular reel, the JR is the perfect primary reel for all divers. Compact and loaded with practical features, the JR delivers peace of mind.

Designed for deployment of lift bags the Manta Junior Reel is constructed with all stainless-steel hardware, the spool is machined out of one piece of UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) plastic. This plastic has one of the highest resistances to the elements, and reel is supplied with either 185' (56.4m) of #30 nylon line or 250' (76.2m) of #24 nylon line.

The reels frame is anodized aluminum and the 3.25" (8.3cm) bolt clip is made of brass for corrosion resistance. Reel is factory set for tension, yet it still has a diver adjustable tension control. The unique spring loaded AFS (Anti-Free Spool) system mechanically prevents free falling and free spooling of line which almost eliminates the chance of backlash or bird nesting. The reel is made in the USA.
