Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is this vest supposed to worn under or over a wetsuit? I have a 3mm/5mm wetsuit. I normally wear a size med. in tops, but found the size 12 in the vest to be so tight I could hardly get it on over my head.JOHN L : The vest can be worn either way, but prefer wearing it under a wetsuit.RICHARD J : Generally worn under a wetsuit, but it is all up to the individual's preference. Neck fit is important, but you need to remember that fit around the neck needs to be close enough to prevent water flow (but NOT blood flow!). In order to have a close fit around the neck and throat, that area of the hood will be stretching fairly tight going over the face and ears. Oh, the joy of wearing a hood!JOE S : it is supposed to be worn under the suit.PATRICIA F : It's to be worn under a wetsuit. You want the vest to be close fitting.JAMES D : Can't answer about the size. However, the vest is made to be worn underneath a full wetsuit. The idea is twofold. First it adds thermal protection in and of itself. Secondly it is held very close to your body by the next layer, the full wetsuit, which minimizes even more the amount of water that gets near your skin on your torso. As an added bonus, the water that enters around your neck from your outer wetsuit does not now first hit the skin of your upper chest and back. It hits the vest. Really comfortable for multi-dive days.ELIZABETH W : Under the wetsuit. I usually wear a 6 or 8, but the sizes run very small, so I bought the largest size and it works.BRIAN H : The LAVACORE vests are meant as 1st layers. They should be worn under your wet suit. It should fit slightly snug but it should not be any tighter than a wet suit. It will really boost your core heat retention. BIGTIME! U have been diving for 28 years and only started using one in the last 2 years and wow! I can only use it when. The conditions at really chilly because otherwise I get overheated actually. They are very comfy too with the soft liner and hat feels goon on the boat instead of the higher friction wetsuit. You may need a size up if it doesn't let you breathe normally and if you can't get it on and off smoothly. Safe Diving!!! Brian Heil-- Pittsburgh, PAHEATHER D : Hooded vests are intended to be worn under your wetsuit. I ordered this vest, but returned it, as I did not like the fit. I have had both Henderson Hyperstretch (which I don't think is made anymore; replaced by Thermoprene) and Waterproof brand hooded vests that I liked much better. They are a snug fit over your head, but once you get them on, they are fine.CHERYL H : I wear it under my wet suit, as does everyone else I know.ROSEMARY P : I wear it under my wetsuit. The hood is tight for sure by design.LINDA R : I wear mine under a 3mm wet suit it was very tight when I first got it but the more I wear it the easier it gets to put on and take offJacques L : My wife wears it under her wetsuit. Dont adjust your weights, it's neutral in the water.REBECCA A : I would wear it over your wetsuit. I returned 3 of the vests due to all of them being to small. I found the sizes to be not standard and was tired of the hassle and returned all of them, with shipping expense out of my pocket. VERY disappointed in the product.
LINDA R : does this have a zipper or allow the hood the be pulled back between dives?JESSICA H : I have this exact vest and often pull the hood down between dives, without taking off the vest. There's enough stretch to do so. Getting the hood back on, with all my hair tucked away, is usually the bigger challenge.HEATHER D : I ordered this, and several other hooded vests to compare against each other. I did end up returning this item, and keeping the one from another manufacturer (I apologize, I don't remember the exact reason that I did not choose this item, as it was a year ago that I purchased it). That said, I wear a hooded vest on most dives. The material around the face is usually flexible enough that you can pull the hood off when you are not in the water (without removing the entire vest, which I presume is what you're concerned about.). I have both the Henderson Titanium and the Waterproof brand vests, and they perform well for me. Happy diving!SHARON A : There is no zipper but it is easy enough to pull the hood back between dives.DEBORAH K : It doesn't have a zipper but you can pull the hood back between dives. fyi - I found the opening around the face tight compared to my other hooded vests.JUNE H : This model does not come with a zipper. You can definitely pull the hood off between the dives. ROSEMARY P : No zipper. I just pull the hood off my head between dives. Love it! Keeps me toasty!RICHARD J : If I'm not mistaken, this model does NOT have a zipper. Generally, if a hood has a zipper the manufacturer is all about flaunting that feature as it does add considerably to their cost of production.
Shopper : Does the hood have a one way vent to allow air to be released?SHARON A : I cut 2 small holes in the top of the hood so it would vent more easily.SARAH P : In my experience of using the hooded vest now for two years, I don't think it would need one. The material is a fabric, not neoprene, so air can escape.JANE W : Yes. RICHARD J : I don't remember this hood having a vent.JOE S : Lavacore does not use a hole to release air, but will not trap air.JUNE H : No, the Lavacore hood does not have a vent but the material will not allow air bubbles to be trapped. PATRICIA F : No, the hood doesn't have a one way vent, but I haven't had a problem with air in the hood. I like the hood connected to the vest so much better than wearing a separate hood. Hope this helps!S A M : No.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?CAROLINE P : Quality, lightweight but comfortable and warmMARY P : Recommended by another diverMATTHEW W : Because its warm and sexyMARISSA V : recommended by another diverAMY H : BrandEILEEN F : Great for keeping warm lap swimming.ALICIA D : Bc it was suggestedJANET M : I chose this hooded vest because I want to be super duper warm when I dive and since lava is super duper hot, it seemed like a great choice. Woohoo!LINDA P : I'm allergic to neoprene. i'm hoping it will workCHRIS R : love teh brand

The best I've found so far

I was looking for a hood that would stay put when diving in colder water. I have long hair and the usual hoods with bibs always come untucked during my dives, letting water into my suit at the neck. The fit of this vest was a bit strange on me - tight in the waist and hips, very large in the chest/arms. The measurements seem to assume that most women are proportioned with a large chest and small waist. In reality, the reverse is probably true for many of us. However, the fabric is stretchy so the tighter waist was not a major problem. I found that it fits okay over my wet suit but does not work well under my wet suit due to the extra fabric in the chest area- it made my 7mm suit, which normally fits like a glove, feel too tight. The drawstring did seem to stay in place over my suit, at least when walking around the house - I was concerned that it would roll up, but it did not. I'll have to see how it actually stays during a dive. Due to the suit not being very thick, I am concerned that the hood will not be warm enough to keep my head warm in 72 degree water. I may add a beanie if needed.

Great Product

This is my second Lavacore Hooded Vest. I really like how comfortable it is. It?s great for snorkeling and adds a bit more insulation under my 3mm wetsuit when needed. The Scuba.com rep was very pleasant to order from and I received my order quickly. Will definitely order from them in the future.

Warm

Keeps you warm. I wear this over a rash guard because it's hard to take off when worn against bare skin. It holds a lot of water and takes a long time to dry.

Hooded vest

Great way to add warmth without adding weight. This fleece lined hooded vest is nearly 0 buoyant but adds warmth like an additional 3 mils

Favorite and most versatile piece of exposure gear.

Favorite and most versatile piece of exposure gear. I wear this on every dive, whether over a rash guard or under a wetsuit. Have worn it over 100 dives and looks like new. Ordered my regular clothing size and fit perfectly.

Love the Lavacore Hooded vest

I love this hooded vest! I had the Lavacore unhooded vest but it blew overboard in Costa Rica, never to be seen again. This replaces that and it is great. I love the hood but I did have to clip a small outlet on the top of the hood to let air out.

Just the xtra warmth needed!

This vest is warm and fuzzy on the inside, the medium fit me perfectly. Easy to put on and take off, even though it isn't really stretchy. Just the added warmth I needed in the Philippines under my 3ml full wet suit. The hood was great because it didn't move around with the mask strap the way a separate hood would. By the 3rd dive of the day, I was very glad to have bought the vest!

Lavacore Hooded Vest

I love my hood vest it’s a great way to layer up light and easy to take off and on. Plus it’s not buoyant.

Perfect extra layer

This is perfect - I wear it every time I dive - even tropical water as I find my ears feel better with my heard covered, especially on long dive trips when you are in the water 3-4 times a day.

Great extra layer

I always get cold in my wet suit when diving multiple times per day (even in 85F water!). This hooded vest is a great, comfortable second layer that I love to save for the third or fourth dive of the day. I love that it is non-constricting, and the drawstring at the bottom keeps it from riding up to my waist. I use it both with the hood up and the hood down, and I like it both ways. Fit is true to size in my opinion.

Not fitted for women and not very warm

This vest isn't fitted for women despite what it claims. It fits like a potato sack. It's also not very warm, even under a wetsuit that compresses it to fit.

More warmth no bulk

I am always cold, especially on the second dive of the day (or the third dive, fourth dive, and so on...). What a difference this makes! The hood is much more comfortable than a neoprene hood and you can hear better as well! It is also easy to clean.

LavaCore by Oceanic Trilaminate Polytherm Hooded Dive Vest Review - $109.95 - Scuba Gear Customer...

truly warm and really cuts down the water exchange around the neck when worn under your wetsuit. however, the vest runs smalli had to order a full size up, and it was still tight, though appropriately so. perhaps its because the material does not stretch much. but i like the warmth and comfort, not to mention that it does not add any buoyancy to my suit.

Hooded Vest

Used in 68-72 degree water. Did not need a hood with my 7mm wet suit. It was nice when removing the wet suit on the surface in windy conditions.

Good Hooded Vest

I am 5'07 with a muscular build and found the fit on the large way too loose and the Med/Large a "better" fit. The chest is a bit loose allowing water to flow in, but since I wore it with a westsuit that was kept to a minimum. Overall the hood was easy to don on in the water and the vest was comfortable throughout all the dives which was the important factor. I'm just not sold on the warmth factor as it did warm me up, but not like previous hooded vest that I own (Pinnacle). Overall I would recommend this vest for the casual temperate water. I do have to say that I tend to get colder than others so it may also be a tolerance issue as well.

Great piece for diving

I used the hooded vest for the first time on a recent dive trip. It worked really well under my 3 ml wetsuit. By cinching the drawstring at the bottom it didn't ride up when I put on the wetsuit. The armholes are a little big for me - otherwise it fits great. Very happy with my purchase.

Love this

This is a great improvement from the basic wetsuit. It's easy to put on, comfortable against the skin, and warm. Use it under my 3mm wetsuit for added warmth on colder dives. Great product. Just got it so I'm not certain of the life of the product at this point. Worked great my first few dives though.
