Questions & Answers

Shopper : I'm looking for something to keep my head and neck warm while cold water running in the ocean - down to 37 degree water temp in winter. Will this lavacore hood work?THOMAS J : Not sure what you mean by "cold water running." However, if you want to know if this hood will keep you warm in 37° water, I would say no. If you are jogging at the beach then the actual air temp would be the defining factor for warmth, combined with your exertion rate and time of exposure. Also I would mention that the hood does not have a good insulated neck gaitor. This may also be a consideration.Mario C : It should do the trick.. it is not what this is designed for, but really believe it may be the right amount of insulation for someone generating a large amount of body heat and not fully submerged, plus the extra comfort of this type of material may be an upgrade for standard neoprene ( it has a thermo protection equivalent to 2mm neoprene without being that thick). worth a shot in my non existent cold water ocean running experience : ) do know the hood quite well as i own one,, hope it helps
Nancy M : I want this primarily to keep water out my ears, will this do?JOSEPH P : Absolutely not. Lavacore is a cloth product....water easily penetratesCLAUDIA H : copy what Ed B said. That tight a seal is dangerous for your ears.ED G : Copy what Ed B and everyone else says. Good extra layer for warmth but not dry.DEB B : No; it is a lightweight hood for keeping your head warm underwater.ED B : No, the Lavacore is a lightweight fabric hood. To keep water out of your ears would take a dry hood, and even those are not completely dry. A hood that sealed that tight would not let water pressure into the ear canal, and you could wind up with a ruptured eardrum in the reverse of an ear squeeze.THOMAS C : No this will not seal out water from your ears just the opposite it will hold water next to your ears, it works just like a wetsuit where it warms the water between your skin and the suit
Shopper : is it good for cold water?KENNETH W : Cold is relative to each individual diver. It's a thin hood more suited for tropical climates adding extra insulation should you venture into depths closer and beyond 30 meters. I would not recommend this for locations off the California coast where I live.JOE S : You can expect this hood to add warmth equivalent to a 2mm hood by itself or 3mm hood if you wear it under another hood. It is neutrally buoyant so you would not have to change weights if you layer it under another. Lavacore hood is good for as low as 60 degrees for some people, but normally used in a little warmer water like 65 - 80 degrees when you start to get chilled much quicker after repetitive dives. ELAINE H : I have both a Lacacore full suit and a lavacore hood. I love them both especially for the 4th or 5th day of diving when you tend to feel the cold more. They don't appear to change your buoyancy or need for more weight. What do you call "cold water"? All water is lower than our core temp so we will eventually feel cold even in 80-plus water.DENISE R : You can expect the same kind of thermal protection from this as you might get from a 2mm to 3mm neoprene hood. I would expect it is good for water 65-80 degrees depending on how much thermal protection you need. I have found the Lavacore to trap air bubbles, so make sure you pre-wet it and get the air out before you descend.STEVE R : Great for diving in Catalina, California. Water temp in 60-65 range. Kept my noggin nice and toasty; and very comfortable. Don't have any experience in anything colder.MELANIE C : It depends on how cold. I only used it in the gulf. Even in the winter months the gulf gets down in the 50s, and I was comfortable. I hope this helps you. Happy diving!!
Glenn P : I'm considering this fantastic hood option. I assume this is the current Lavacore hood manufactured. Why the discrepancy between your listed size chart and Lavacore Internationals? It's got me confused? Keep up the great work. Regards, GlennJOE S : LavaCore is an Oceanic brand. The sizing should be the same, but if you are finding a discrepancy in the size charts, definitely go with the chart from Lavacore. YAN G : This is the current Lavacore Hood. Our size chart we currently have posted is exactly the same as Lavacore's size chart for hoods.WILLIAM J : The best indicator of the correct size for yourself is the hat size. I wear a 7 1/4" hat and ordered a large, and it fit perfectly. I hope this helped you. This is a warm and easy wearing hood.MIYUKI S : Please use the size chart from Lavacore International. http://www.lavacoreinternational.com/lavacore-hood/ ED G : I love this hood( the socks also). I thought that I needed the medium size based on the charts, but I exchanged for a large which was perfect. The opposite proved true for the socks. I dive both these products on a regular basis as a volunteer at the Denver aquarium and they have held up well.ED S : I was a bit confused as well, I wear a 7.25 to 7.50 hat, I bought both a large and an extra large, the large seemed to fit best. Hoe this fits helps...and by the way, it's a great hood. RICHARD F : I am not sure how to answer your question - I have only used the hood once - its very warm. That's all I can offer you.
Shopper : What is the sizing for this product?GARY B : Great fit, soft, comfortable, & warm.HEBERTH V : Im going to use my hood on april 7 , i will let you know, ok guys?MELANIE C : I have a very small head and the Lavacore hood fits great. I love it.DENISE R : Try Lavacoreinternational's web page 36 for sizing.ROBERT Z : Sizing runs true to size. Hood fit well and does not pull on your face like most hoods do, and it does keep you warmer. I like Lavacore so much I just bought my wife a full Lavacore skin!LISA L : great hood for extra warmth. i have a small head and wear a women's size 2-4 and the small fit perfect.ED G : I found this to run a little small. In a tri lam hood before this I wore a large. In the Lava Core I am more comfortable in an extra large. Hope this helps.JAMES M : I bought a medium and it fits just right. My head circumference is about 22". I am 5'7" and 140lbs It stretches, feels snug and comfy. Seems to be very durable. Other sellers have these in cool colors and patterns. Jim

Tight fitting

These are thin, warm hoods. However, I had problems with the sizes. I am 5'10" and weigh 180lbs. I bought a large and Xlarge hood. BOTH were very tight and not comfortable. Also, while I did not dive with them, the hood covers much of the forehead area so be careful to make sure your mask is free of the hood or your mask will likely leak.

Perfect fit

Wear this as a layering piece or alone. When worn alone, it does not loose its shape like some thermal layering hoods do. Provides additional warmth when layered without the bulk.

No stretch, too tight, size up!

I like the thickness, but there is almost no stretch. I don?t think I have a large head, but a size large was too small. I?m exchanging for an XL and we?ll see!

Outstanding product!

Outstanding product! I highly recommend this hood. I used it over the summer and it was very comfortable. Now, I'm looking forward to using it as a layer under my hooded jacket over the winter.

Warm and comfortable

This hood is extremely comfortable and makes a great sun and cold protection layer. Since it’s windproof, it’s very nice to have on in the boat coming back from dive sites.

Not too cold, not too hot

Great hood. My second, or maybe third. I ended up donating this to one of the crew on the Tambora in Indonesia, who was wearing something that must have resembled a hood years ago.

Great Hood to Accompany LC Full-suit

I bought this with the full-suit as a stand alone or under garment for winter dives in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Springs etc. I was able to use this hood and the suit alone in 66 to 68 degree waters. My head stayed warm and toasty. Very well made and worth the money.

LavaCore Trilaminate Polytherm Hood Review - Scuba Gear Reviews

This was a great hood for my wife. Just right for keeping her hair from getting tangled & for warmth (she gets cold easily). We used this for diving in Cozumel.

lavacore hood

I haven't used it yet, but it appears to be a fantastic product, especially for a piddly $25. I'm a "average" sized male, (5-11", 200+) and a 'large' fit very nicely. Unless you have a jumbo noggin, I'd stick with a 'large', for most adult 'murican males. This is vastly more comfortable than a thick neoprene hood, which is what I was after. It's fairly thin, but the material obviously has more thermal effectiveness than you expect, and along with a decent wetsuit, this will very effectively limit the waterflow around the head and neck, which is the point.

Keeps my head warm while wearing under my 7 mm hood

It is soft, thin, dries quickly, and provides an extra layer of thermal insulation under my hood. I dive in cold water 40F +/- 3 F and I dive wet ... I consider it as essential gear & highly recommend it and it is worth every penny ...

Love it

I'm NOT a cold water diver so I wanted something to keep me warm in the Cozumel Caribbean in December. This (along with the socks and long sleeve shirt) were perfect. I ordinarily hate the restrictive feeling of a hood. But this was so comfortable (and nice and warm), I truly forgot I had it on while diving. And it was easy to slip the part of the hood that covers my chin down, because I didn't need it.

feels great

i use this hood diving in the Denver aquarium (73-75 degree water). it is super warm and pretty comfortable. my only beef is that it feels a little tight around the neck while working. we do stuff that one would not be doing normally sport diving. i am hoping that this loosens up as it breaks in. still way more comfortable than a neoprene hood and just as warm.

Warm and comfortable

By HELEN M.

This hood is extremely comfortable and makes a great sun and cold protection layer. Since it’s windproof, it’s very nice to have on in the boat coming back from dive sites.

Lavacore is a technically advanced fabric, constructed and engineered exclusively for water sports requiring the ultimate in thermal control and superior comfort. The unique design of Lavacore materials eliminates constriction and allows for extreme movement and flexibility while regulating your core warmth.

Lavacore hood is made with an exclusive Polytherm Tri-Laminate. Ideal for use as a primary exposure vest in warmer waters or as a supplemental undergarment in colder waters. Windproof and breathable providing anti-wind chill properties while also drawing moisture away from the body on the surface, ensuring warmth in cold conditions. For the ultimate in warmth Lavacore's Merino Laminate lined garments are super soft yet durable. Moisture wicking and anti-bacterial, the Merino fleece inner minimizes odor and keeps you warm above and below the surface.

Hood is DWR: Durable Water Repellant has flat seam construction throughout for stretch and comfort.
