DANIEL R : Would removing the bands during off season prolong the life of them or is recommend to leave them on. I've recently purchased new bands(received black instead of original yellow) and would like to get more than a couple of years of use. Also, is there an advantage to black vs. yellow bands?DANIEL R : Thanx for giving a reply. I just learned from Josh that applying Bag Balm helps to prolong the life of the bands (black or yellow). Happy aqua hunting...DANIEL R : Thank you Josh. I actually have bag balm and never would have guessed to use it on my bands. Happy aqua hunting...JOSH H : As an advantage between yellow and black bands, I don't know the answer to that. however, I leave my bands on my gun year around. The key is to have no tension on them and use a petroleum based lubricant on the bands as this will extremely increase longevity. Best product I have found is bag balm. It's comes in a green metal can. It's primary use is for dairy farmers but it works awesome increasing the life of the bands!DWIGHT S : Hi Daniel, I bought my gun back in 09 and used it scarcely during the summers. I can tell you though, i left the bands on my gun every year and over time they disintegrated. Error on my part for not cleaning and storing the gun properly. Just had to buy new bands. I'd say leaving the bands on or off is irrelevant as long as you take care of what you have. I'd look into seeing what conditions the rubber is bested stored at and if there is any protective liquid/cream/lotion that can be used to preserve the elasticity. I'm sure fellow spearo's will have some ideas. As for color, I've only used black. Best regards
MICHAEL J : How long is the "tether" from the gun to the shaft? Also would you suggest this for CA "rockfish" hunting? I'm going to be doing alot tight rock hunting and need a durable gun / shaft. I'm a first time speargun purchaser so need something simple but reliable that won't bust my bank. Thank you!DMITRY G : Shock line on this gun has around 12 feet length (it is range). For a first speargun I'd recommend to buy any European style gun in the same range of the price ($200), because they are much lightweight and have positive buoyancy in discharge condition, also simple and reliable.BENNIE S : This is simply the best Bang for Your Buck. Shoots like a canon and is really accurate really dependable. I have abused one for the last 20+ Years and it has served me well. I have 5 of them so if I get a dull tip or anything like a big fish on one I just take another one and let the guys on the boat deal with it. GREAT GUNPHILLIP S : I replaced the original tether with a coiled tether, the original one was about 12 feet. As for hunting rock fish in ca, is the reason I purchased since my dive has been using on for over 4 years and I was impressed by its performance in CA waters Goo Luck Phil SGEOFFREY W : Honestly I am not a fan of the 'cord' tether for all my guns. I have the telephone bungy cord replacement. They are reasonably priced and worth the hassle of having to deal with wrapping the cord everytime. I suggest over sizing it to the next size up to minimize the loss of some force. I have three 38-specials and use them exclusivly for Rock, Ling, Cabizon and the occasional Greenling (my white whale). My guns have been beat up on the rocks and are stillholding strong. I currently use two where one I modified with the next level of bands for additinoal strength and length, the third is still in its wrapper as a backup. My oldest is over five years old and is my old faithful that I take out first. I say buy and be happy.
ADEL D : Does the package include a manual on how to use the gun, and how to disassemble/reassemble it? I've never used a gun before, just spear pole...ADEL D : Thanks everyone for the replies. I was specially asking about how to wrap the shooting line...? Is that straightforward?DUSTIN M : No manual came with mine but any local dive shop will be able to help you out with it. You shouldnt need to disassemble it any time soon, they come put together and the bands last a fair amount of time.ROBERT S : Yes, there was a small manual, but you don't really need it. Usage is quite straight forward. Maintenance is just wash it down after use. YouTube has a few good instructional videos on how to use the speargun. Happy Hunting!RICK H : Adel, I purchcased this spear gun from Leasure Pro I think a year or two ago. I don't remember if it came with a maual. Using the spear gun is pretty straight forward you cock it by placing the handle end of the spear gun on your hip and pull back the bands one at a time until they hook into the grooves in the spear. Always use the safety switch. Depending on how much power and distance you need you can cock two or three bands. Hope this helps.ANNA G : Hi. I bought this for a boyfriend of mine that has since passed away. I can tell you that he loved this speargun and was very pleased with it. He picked it out and used it several times with much success and always traveled with it to use it. Sorry!TODD V : WITH THREE FRESH BANDS EFFECTIVE PENETRATION RANGE IS APPROXIMATELY 8 FEET. THINNER FISH SUCH AS RED SNAPPER, TRIGGERFISH, SHEEPSHEAD ARE APPROPRIATE. A LEGAL FORK LENGTH AMBERJACK IS TOO LARGE UNLESS AT POINT BLANK RANGE. NICE GUN FOR ITS SIZE.PAT M : Hi there, I like this gun but i use it specifically for close range. With all 3 bands it's good for 20-25'. I shoot snapper, grouper, trigger.BARRY A : Maximum distance is about 15 feet, on a smaller fish. The farther a fish is away from the gun, the lower the penetration power left in the spear. If you shoot a large fish (6' long), you will need to be within 4 or 5 feet, and be ready to go for a ride, unless you actually hit the fish in the brain and "stone" it.BEN P : I measured 12 feet from wherever your trigger hand is, about 9.5 feet from the tip of the gun. Not sure of the max fish size, but it's gonna be big enough to handle anything you can handle while diving. The gun seems to shoot very straight and fast and is easy enough to arm while underwater. great gun

great gun with plenty of power (when using 3 bands). Spear is very heavy and durable, but comes out of gun really slow with only 1 band. The tip unscrewed after the first three shots. Maybe a little locktite might help. great gun for thick skulled Lingcod!!

Nice Speargun

It was a little slow getting here. And it did not arrive as described. It was a different color and the bands were not yellow they are black. Not a big deal to me on either.

This gun kicks butt!!

This has been the best all around speargun for the Pacific N.W. and beyond. I love the open breach for fast loading, the power is amazing for a gun under four feet. Pretty good quality, nice accuracy and plenty of range for our limited visibility. Great job JBL!!

Hands down, the best features for the NW

Stop whining, I've owned a dozen guns and the NW magnum is the best of all worlds. It's short enough to nail the big ones on wrecks, durable enough for rock reefs, powerful enough for the bigger game, easy enough to use with thick gloves. Rinse it, maintain it and you'll never need to replace it. Great job JBL.

Good beginer's gun.

This is my first gun. I've never shot before. I took it to the pool and practiced with a target. I never missed at the max range. The gun is easy enough to load, maneuver and aim, but I will be adding some buoyancy to the muzzle end to make full extension less fatiguing.

Everything is as I expected

The spear gun design that started it all, the JBL Magnum series of guns is probably responsible for more speared fish than all other spear guns combined. It's no wonder; as this durable and accurate workhorse features a 1 1/4" (3.2 cm) drawn alloy barrel, corrosion resistant hardened stainless steel trigger, shaft and point. The JBL728S shaft is made from 17-4 spring stainless for durability and long life, shaft is 24" (61 cm) in length with a 5/16" diameter, and is hand-tuned for alignment then heat-treated for maximum hardness to reduce flex and provide optimum energy transfer. Handles are constructed of two-piece cast aluminum providing strength and ease of maintenance. Guns overall length is 36" (91.5 cm).

The Magnum 38 Special Northwest features three 9/16" x 16" (14.3mm x 406mm) Hi-Mod JBL216 bands with 302 stainless wire wishbones. JBL's unique latex formulation and dip manufacturing process delivers radical modulus strength. The power curve increases as bands are stretched for optimum performance. Special anti-oxidants help protect against harmful U.V. rays, prolonging sling life. Gun has a one hand safety and trigger operation.

Let's get right to the point, these tips are designed to punch through even the toughest fish, penetrating thick skin and hard bone. Constructed of hardened 17-4 stainless with a razor-sharp finish they'll make short work of just about any game fish. Low-profile, stainless wings are quickly deployed and angled to grab tight and hold on. Sliding wing retainer allows for easy removal of fish. Our patented (#4685239) rotating design allows for 360°-degree spin, providing greater holding power and minimizing the chance of your point unthreading from the shaft because of a fish "rolling" in battle. 2-5/8-inch wing span designed to perform even after impact on rock and reef, the JBL843 is a durable workhorse. Each point is designed for low maintenance, dependability and most important results.

Gun is equipped with the JBL515 Shock Line. Sometimes we miss or we shoot a large fish and the recoil can pull the gun out of your grip, whichever the shock line will keep you in control. Guns range is 14' (4.27 meters). Tried and trusted this is one hunting buddy you'll be glad to share a secret spot with. These guns are most suitable for spear fishing among reefs and rocks where heavy penetration is needed but range is not critical. Gun is totally made in the USA.
