MICHAEL C : Where did you get the longer shaft and what exactly do I look for to upgrade my ELF to a 30" shaft?ALAN J S : 8mm shaft threaded for 6 mm at both ends was available at DEMA A fellow on Bonaire had some with a coupler (female both ends) and a stainless bolt (6mm) which hold the spring in place and the butt to use the toolCHRIS M : I don't use this anymore due to the short sling of the spring. Get the yellow fiberglass shaft spear and then get a 6 tip spear point they are better than the ELF and leisure Pro has them on their website. I shot over 200 lionfish this year and I can tell you for sure the yellow fiberglass shafted sling type spear with the 6 point spear is a far better more accurate and further range spear for the Lionfish.SUSAN M : I believe the 30" shaft upgrade was available for the old style elfs. I know there is a guy on Bonaire that has the longer shafts, Bas Tol. I do not think you can buy a new one with at 30" shaft.WILLIAM B : I had a machine shop make itJASON H : i have found this to be a second class solution we have found the various pole spears in about 4 ft length have better range and more penetrationALAN J S : I have gone to an 8mm shaft (steel-less) (7mm bent for big lionfish) as the longer shaft has more leverage than the shorter ones, but get into holes the lionfish hide The shaft is threaded 6mm to fit the standard 6mm tip and the butt ( after the upper handle hole is enlarged for the shaft) is attached with a stainless 6 mm nut or better a 3/4 inch steel-less spacer (threaded both ends 6 mm). (one end holds the shaft and is kept in the spring and the 6 mm butt end of the spacer keeps the end butt in place by a 6mm bolt (and the knob end is not enlarged to keep the bolt in place. Shafts were available at DEMA, and at machine shop might find it on lineBRAD B : I would not buy that particular spear for lion fish. I had that one and had trouble with the bigger lion fish and also missed some smaller ones. They make a trident spear it has 8 points on it and surrounds them. It has a yellow 24 inch rod. Where do you hunt them?
W DOUGLAS G : Please provide the dimensions... Overall length when the spear is retracted, length of the spear (looks to be 24" based on the question below),and length when extended (with or without spear tip). Thanks... (here's the mandatory question mark ?)CINDI J : Doug, The ELF from Leisure Pro is 18" long overall, end to end, without an added tip. The handle (injection molded plastic) is 7-7/8" long. I can pull spring back about 9-10" (the length of the shaft beyond the front of the handle) and it pulls back smoothly. I use a Trident HA08 tip, 6" long with three barbed points. However, I have just upgraded the shaft to a 29 1/2" (75 mm) stainless steel rod (threaded 6mm on both ends) to give me a bit more "reach" to hunt lionfish. The ELF is the only approved tool that may be used on Bonaire and it must be registered with the Marine Park. There is another model of ELF with a stronger spring that I cannot pull back as far. That one also has a solid Delrin handle. So far I am very happy with the ELF from Leisure Pro. I've killed 3500+ LF on Bonaire since 2010.WALTER B : As shipped the ELF is 24" but the draw is about 14". I replaced shaft with a 30" shaft and use a parrallizer tip.JAMES R : There is no change in the overall length of the rod as the handle simply slides on the rod. The spear does not extend or retract. I do not have the ELF where I can measure it, I believe the tip is about 4 - 6 inches. Overall the length should be under 30 inches, but only 24 inches with the tip removed.SUSAN M : The length of the spear is 24 inches and does not change. The shaft is bolted to the butt end of the handle with a spring inside the handle. You hold the front part of the handle and pull the butt end back to extend the spring and then let the butt end go to fire spear. You keep holding on to the handle when the spear slams forward. The travel depends on how strong you are. It is possible to pull it back until the tip hits the handle.
Kris H : what do you do with this? How do you Spear a lionfish with it?CHARLES S : You add a spear tip to it. The you pull the butt end of the handle back and let it fly! It has a spring inside the handle and is very powerful. I got my hand caught in it once, ouch!ERIC I : Its spring loaded so you just pull the handle back. Of course you will need to purchase a spear tip for it.ALAN J S : google " you tube" for training and spearing lionfish video The ELF is a short spring loaded spear that is fixed (It cannot shoot out) It has several versions, the current is 24 inches 6 mm stainless shaft. Most prefer 30 inch shaft. Add a barbed trident (lionfish largest 46 cm) or for small fish the 6 pointed barbed tip. In Bonaire this is the only approved legal tool, chosen not to damage coral. The trigger cannot be used on this version , but the deldrin machined one does have the strength to work with a trigger

Great compact killer

This thing is small but powerful. I coupled it with a trident tip and it is lethal. Takes 2 hands to fire it, and takes some getting used to, but great as a 2nd spear. Put a longer tip on it and use it as shishkabob after you kill the first lion fish with it! Spear has been in salt water maybe 50-75 times and still looks and feels new - spring is in great shape.

Good LF Killer

Easy to use but you need to practice before you get in the water to hunt Lionfish - I have the ELF Tool Lionfish Spear Tip without the barbs but wish I had one with barbs - First hunt I had 3 Lionfish get off the spear - It's important that once you have your pray speared you keep it trapped against a rock or in the sand so the you can control it with your pointer or a decsent size knife - Bottom line practice
