Questions & Answers

JAMES O : Are these fins positively or negatively buoyant?darrick c : Hello James, these would sink over time in the water column.
Ed H : volo power new abs strap- rubber disentegrates. is the new aBS a replacemement and where to buy ? gooey rubber strap if sit in 35 degC and hi humidity. approx 1500 small granules of rubberKEVIN F : http://www.leisurepro.com/p-mrsfsap/mares-fin-strap-with-abs-plus-buckle-assembly-black
RALPH G : Is the Power Volo stiffer and better in strong current than the regular Volo?KEN L : I somehow like the Power over the Regular. I have both and can't say it's stiffer, it's just engineered to tread more water. Hope that answers for you.CARL H : YESTHOMAS D : Good question, since I purchased the Volo, I have no idea which is stiffer. why send such a question unless I purchased both types ???????
Leon D : I wear a size 10 pair of shoes .. however I wear a size 9 of Mares Classic Boot NG 5mm. What size should I chose when ordering the Mares Volo Powers? Also if I want to add the Mares Bungie straps what size of those should I chose?MONTE S : regular on the fins, they work great!J C L : I love my fins but the LeisurePro size chart listing 3 chooses does not give me enough information to answer your Question....try the manufactures site...STERLING L : Leon, I wear size 9 booties and Volo Power fins size REGULAR. They go together just fine. I can't advise about the bungie strap size, altho I have "spring" straps from another source mounted on another pair of Volo Power fins. The brand and size aren't marked, but I'd guess they were size medium. I'd suggest holding off on the bungie straps, tho, because the current Volo heel straps are easy to release, adjust and lock. Try them first. II prefer them to my spring straps, which are hard to grasp and pull back when my fingers are cold. BenjaminYAN G : Should only stick out a few inches. Anything more, its too small. Anything less, its too big. There is fine line, and you really should try them on and see how they fit.Leon D : Thanks for the response, when buying open heel fins. Can you tell me how many inches that your heel should stick out of the fins ?YAN G : Best thing would be to try them on to find the right fit. We can recommend a regular size fin with a regular bungee strap. We do have the PFF guarantee, so you can exchange them if do not fit, as long as you did not put them in the water.
BONY C : I am a size 8.5 in shoes, which I recommend buying in some shoes I am a size 9, the other question is between regular and small blade is the same size? thanksLUIZFRANCISCO S : Go regular, I'm pretty sure u will be glad.JOHN S : Suggest you buy larger. You can alway wear a sock or booty to fill a larger fin, but can't reduce your foot to accomadate a smaller finJ C L : I have the same size foot... but EEE width...I bought reg...which work fine there is alot of adjustment in the strap..MICHELE H : I wear an 8 to 8 1/2 shoe and purchased a small in the fins, actually have two pairs, love them, the fin blade seems the same in all sizes only the foot pocket differs. the foot pocket is gererous in size and I wear a hard sole bootieSCOTT B : Since you apparently are interested in the open heel fins, that would mean you dive with booties which add some dimension to your foot, depending on their thickness. I would recommend going for the larger size, i.e. medium. You can always tighten down the straps on the medium (which come on the open heel, as opposed to the closed heel) as opposed to trying to stretch a too-tight small. However, if you still are not sure, why don't you visit a scuba shop and try some on. You are not obligated to buy. Fyi, I wear a 10.5 to 11 size and purchased the large fin as opposed to the medium.MIYUKI S : The Blade is 37cm in all sizes. If the boot you use is a size 9 has a thick sole (or you would like the option for a thick soled boot) I would recommend the regular. If you will only use thin sole boots then the smalls will fit. Overall the regular will give you the most options for a good fit.ANTHONY Z : I have the exact same problem as you with the shoe size, I got the regular & I love them very easy to put on & take off especially if you are tank diving.SERGEI M : Sorry, can not hep you on sizing. I am getting XL for size 12-13, it works OK. As far as I can tell, the blade length is the same for all sizes.RUSS H : great

Great purchase

I love the Volos. I have weak ankles and these don't make them hurt. I can glide through the water with ease.

Do not buy

Great looking fin, however quality is so bad. After about 70 dives I had to bin them. Please see the picture

Great fins when full foot are appropriate.

I love these fins! They are stiff enough to give me a bit of speed when needed and the ability to swim backwards which didn?t work with my ScubaPro split fins. They travel well too. they are comfortable without socks and work on all the dives where I don?t have to do any shore walking. I have the same model with back straps for when I do have to do shore walking. Great product.

Fin fails prematurely due to design flaw

Like other reviewers here, I have found the fin fails quickly. The black flexible plastic detaches from the silver rigid stiffeners that run the length of the fin. This is a design flaw and is unworthy of the Mares brand and the $225 price tag.

Superb, lightweight fins.

Honestly, I didn?t think high of these fins when I got them, but they require minimal leg work for them to start propelling you in the water. They?re lightweight. What?s different about these for me is the fact that with little legwork you move through the water very quick. However, if you try to overdue the kicking while wearing these, you?re gonna cramp. Just relax your legs and kick very minimally. I tried these in a pool first, then into open water. They do well in the current. Despite the price at first, they are worth it. The size is true to size. I didn?t wear a sock while wearing these because I don?t think you need them. I would recommend these, or when the time is up, acquiring another pair.

Mares Volo

Recently bought them as a gift, I have a pair that I bought from leisure back in 2006 and still works. At that time mares used to have production in Italy, but the new pair made in Bulgaria.

Mares Volvo Racers

I dive for Florida. Underwater repairs and maintenance. I’m in the water 3-4 times a week. I also free dive for scallops in the summer. These mares slip on fins are the best compromise for both environments. Added thrust over my last set. I recommend for recreational and commercial use. I admit some prejudice. Mares has been my gear choice for 40 years. ????

Excellent!!

I love these fins! I use them for snorkeling and diving. My dad and I have been purchasing this model for years. They are lightweight and just the right amount of flexible to propel you through the water with minimal effort.

Loving Mares Volo Power!!

My friend had a pair and I thought they looked great so I tried hers and fell in love. I bought them as soon as I returned from my diving trip. I have used them in Cayman Brac, Socorro Islands and recently in Turks and Caicos and have been very pleased. They fit great, work great, and come off very easily when I want to take them off with the little clip.. Just perfect for scuba diving!!

Wow is all thatI can say

Wow. I have been using a pair of fins that are as stiff as a 2x4. When I bought them 20+ years ago, that was okay, but now, even though I am in really good shape, I find them just too stiff (58 years old 180 # male). I have been reading the reviews on these fins for years (all great) and had a strong recommendation from one of my friends who has a pair. Finally decided to take the plunge and am I glad I did. Just got back from a diving vacation in the BVI. These fins are incredible. Comfortable as slippers with unbelievable power. My diving partner commented on this. Also, my air consumption went down as I was doing much less effort to move than before. FYI, I used a size 9 Ocean Quest 5mm Premium Super-Stretch Titanium Medium Sole Dive Boots

Leisure pro and mares-volo fins.

I had to teturn the fins due to a defect in one of the fin blades. They were on back order, had to purchase them somewhere else. The fins I bought somewhere else were the exact same ones. They are some of the best fins I have owned todate. Bought my wife a pair. Leisurepro's return process is one of best customer oriented and simple processws that I have ever worked with. I purchased other items from Leisure pro. Really like the mares-volo fins.

Been using Mares Fins for many years.

I have BOTH the open-foot and full-foot version of these fins. I prefer full-foot when possible, but shore diving and other circumstances require booties. The simpler Mares fins are just about as good.

Finally, my own real SCUBA fins!

I really enjoy having these fins (flippers!!!). I have about 70 scuba dives in the last year and a half and all of the have been with my "snorkel fins." Those are full foot too. I got a chance to try on my buddy's open foot fins and I despise them. Even with booties on, the hard foot box is so uncomfortable, and you never feel like your foot is in the right place. So I knew if I wanted a "true" scuba fin I was going to have to pick from the full foot ones available. For some reason, after reading tons of articles and consumer reviews, I gravitated to the Mares Volo Race. I was able to pick the correct size by trying them on at a local dive shop. They are a hint looser than my other fins but they still felt like a good fit. I was worried about rubbing on my feet while using them but there is none of that. The foot is verysecure while still feeling comfortable! And now, the benefit of these fins-they drive significantly harder than my other fins. Thank God because that is what I bought them for! 2-3bkicks now launches me forward where I would have had to continously kick with my other fins. Some other thoughts: I searched for a fin that would give me the benefits I wanted but still be packable in my 30" suitcase. The blades on these are slightly wider and maybe an inch longer than my other fins. They just fit in my suitcase lengthwise. There isn't much of a weight difference, even though these are built more robustly. I also like the yellow color I chose. I looked at the "white" ones. They are actually a more grayish-light blue, or silver. I just liked the yellow. The hardest part was trying to figure out which fins to choose, considering they are all different designs and shapes. For me, these kind of grew on me in the stores and I finally took my other fins in one day and laid them on top of each other to try to discern if the Mares were different enough to be worth taking a chance on. And at the end of the day, the reasonable price got me off the fence and I bought a pair. After about 5 dives and some snorkeling with them, i think my legs have made the adjustment. I love them! Good luck!

Best fins ever!

These fins are amazing! I swim in open water near reefs with varying currents. With the Mare fins I feel like I can swim against any current. I like them so much Iâ??ve already bought a pair for my mother and three other pairs for friends. I recommend them to anyone I know who uses fins. One friend said she never could use fins without getting foot cramps. After swimming with the Mare Volo Race Foot Fins she became a convert. Iâ??m between sizes. The 38/39 were just a tad snug so I had to go up to the 40/41. I were neoprene socks to avoid blisters.

Love the fins

Love the fins so far. I exert a lot less effort than with my split fins. I purchased the bungee straps one size larger than usual per the recommendations of many on the reviews.

Awful fins

I am a professional diver and have to work in a variety of conditions. Strong current, weak current, you name it I work in it. These fins are okay if you're in super shallow water with no current in my opinion. Strong current kills this product. I was working in stronger current for a few hours today and I had to kick so fast to get anywhere. Not a good product for a SERIOUS diver.

Good light weight full footed fin

Excellent travel fin with great thrust. I live in a cold water climate, but got these to do some tropical diving and was very pleased. The foot is plenty wide and comfortable and the fin fits true to size.

Mares Volo Power Open Heel Fins

I purchased these fins after extensive research for a trip to Bonaire. I am 9/9.5W. I purchased the fins in size small. They fit perfectly with my dive boots. The heel straps were easily adjustable. I didn't cramp at all during my one week trip (with multiple dives daily). The yellow looks very cool and the fins are light(er) weight. I definitely recommend these fins!

Mares Volo Fins

I am an ocean swimmer and look for fins that provide more thrust than just dead weight of most fins. First thing to consider is weight and these fins are light. A big plus. To heavy and they tire you out. Thrust comes when a fin flexes and then snaps back. I cut five inches off the end because in my opinion it's just to soft. This enables the fin to really pop. These do run big as I am size 13 but 11-12 fit perfect. No flex to the foot pocket is a must and these don't flex. Very nice.

best fins I have ever dove

I love these fins and have a few pairs . I love the ease of kicking and the ability to do any kick styles (frog, scull, regular) . I can also do a 360º turn on a dime using only one fin . The only reason for 4 and not 5 stars is the plastic stiffener separates from the rubber on the fin tip after a couple hundred dives . To be fair, I am a photographer and am very hard on gear .

Game Changing

My wife had a love hate relationship with diving. She loved what she was seeing but hated trying to keep up with dive groups and really disliked some pushes against the flow. So before our trip to Couzmel I bought her a pair. Let's just say when I get home I will be ordering another pair. For me. These are awesome. I was not once today looking behind me to see my wife. Or yesterday. So much for problems keeping up or wearing out from too much effort. Just order them.

Great fins - design flaw

Okay I love these fins so much I am ordering my second pair. I use them for diving and snorkeling (which I can do for hours), my only disappointment is that I have to replace them, because they split around where the word Mares is imprinted in the fin. I think they would still be working if not for that. Yes a bit bulky, but they are so powerful I just love the feeling of swimming with these. I think I must of had them 6 or 7 years. I am very diligent about rinsing my gear and keeping it out of the sun.

Love this fin

By LazyLady

I needed a backup pair of fins, and in a co,our that I could use when swimming around sharks.

Bitter tears

By Sama

I sold mine to a friend and I've been kicking myself ever since. These are the most comfortable, most efficient fins I've owned. I have to buy another pair - that's all there is to it.

The Mares Volo scuba fin is a gigantic leap forward in fin technology. This fin is so revolutionary; it is covered by 8 different patents. The Volo uses Mares Optimized Pivoting Blade system (OPB); the Volo is 30% more efficient than traditional fins. The OPB allows the blade to maintain an optimal angle throughout the kicking cycle, whereas traditional fins achieve this only during a small portion of the cycle, OPB produces a constant thrust, which minimizes fatigue and produces fluid movement through the water. The Mares Volo also allows you to use alternate kick strokes not possible with splits fins.

The Volo Super-channel is designed for the diver who wants the perfect blend of power and efficiency in one fin. The new blade design with a large central Super-channel and two traditional lateral channels provide excellent thrust while maintaining hi-efficiency and minimizing leg fatigue. The blade is constructed of Tecralene and Thermoplastic rubber for extended durability.

The ergonomically designed foot pocket delivers maximum power and evenly distributes pressure over the foot to minimize fatigue. The foot pocket interior features internal ribbing that improves fit, eliminates foot suction and prevents foot pocket flexing, while transmitting more power to the blade.

Volo uses Mares patented design ABS Plus Buckles (Adjustable Binding System). It only takes one quick movement to easily open or close these buckles, even when wearing thick neoprene gloves. The double button release prevents the buckles from accidently opening making them the most user-friendly system on the market. Fin comes in multiple colors and sizes, has an overall length between 23.2" to 25.2" (59cm to 64cm) and weights 2.5 lbs. to 3.4 lbs. (1.13 kg to 1.53 kg) depending on size. Size 42/43 has a blade surface area of 108.5 cubic inches (700 cubic centimeters).
