Best spear gun for large fish and long shots on the market. Regardless what Fishzilla says, barrel is ultra-strong and does not noodle at all. As an expert spearfisherman for over 30 years, I prefer this gun over all others. This is a man's gun that requires strength to pull the 5/8" bands, but you can downgrade the slings to smaller diameter ones if you need to. I have successfully taken shots over 20 feet away and fish over 150 lbs with this gun, most with only 2 slings. Don't like the new plastic muzzle though, they should go back to the aluminum one.

5/8" bands are tough to strech, true. With all three bands, you better be aiming at a big fish, because the gun noodles like angel hair pasta. Accuracy with two bands is fine, but you won't fully penetrate anything biger than 15 lbs. I killed a lot of fish with this gun, and overall its highly useable. If I could do it over again, I'd spend the extra money and get a woody.

works great on big fish and long shots. has a kick of a mule and if not focused can recoil and hurt you. hate the fact that the muzzle that holds the 3 bands in place is plastic made. the strenght of the bands broke the muzzle making it unusable. gun states that its extra heavy duty, but muzzle sure is not! have to replace for gun to function again.

Nice gun but you need to be a weight lifter to pull the bands back. Going to try getting longer bands.

I have only used this gun for a month and bought it to extend my range -- and am very happy with the performance. The three bands take some strength to pull, so this gun is not for the weak. Overall, I am very happy with this gun.

MADE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO REQUIRE MORE POWER!
Manufactured in the JBL Oceanside California Factory for maximum quality control and craftsmanship. Magnum XHD* XHD stands for Extra Heavy Duty and JBL means it. Thicker aerospace aluminum extruded alloy barrel, 5/16hardened stainless steel trigger mechanism, carbide tipped and is equipped with 5/8" (16mm) Nitro Hi-Mod bands that feature stainless wire wishbones. The XHD is the gun of choice for commercial and hard-core shooters; to these guys it's a tool not a toy. Three bands and a heavy shaft will punch through just about any fish, which is why the Shark Research Institute depends on the XHD for tough jobs like radio tagging 40' (12 meter) whale sharks. Go big, go XHD. XHD Guns are nearly identical to the Magnum guns, but more rugged, and longer lasting. Using more heat-treated steel and more powerful slings, these guns provide longevity and power in one.
The Competition Magnum XHD comes with a 48" x 5/16" (122 cm x 8 mm) shaft which is made from 17-4 spring stainless, heat treated for maximum hardness, which virtually eliminating shaft flex. The shaft is equipped with JBL's JBL823 Break-Away Bullet-Nose (Tri-Cut) Spear Point. Designed for large powerful fish this breakaway has a 4" (102mm) wingspan and its 3/8" (9.5mm) standard profile opens a large hole for easy passage of barbs through the fish, one shot is all you will ever need with this tip. Tip is hardened 17-4 stainless and features a multi-braid stainless cable in 3/32" (2.38 mm) diameters.
This tips detachable bushing and cable hangs on no matter how hard the fight while minimizing damage to your spear shaft. The low-profile, double barbed design allows for pinpoint accuracy and dependable deployment. Wing retainer allows for easy removal from the fish. Don't trust a once in a lifetime fish to anything else. Tip is standard with most Magnum model spear guns and is for medium to large fish.
The shaft is propelled by three Nitro 5/8" x 24" (16mm x 610 mm) slings. JBL's unique latex formulation and dip manufacturing process delivers radical modulus strength. The power curve increases as bands are stretched for optimum performance. Special anti-oxidants help protect against harmful U.V. rays, prolonging sling life. Wishbones are 302 stainless wires that provide superior strength and durability. The spear gun has a 55" (140 cm) length with a reach of 25' (7.6 meters) and is positively buoyant.
