Jordan V : is the break away tip more beneficial than a regular tip? if so, why?RYAN W : I've got spearguns with both and it doesn't seem to matter at all. Although it is obviously slimmer and seems to store easier in my gun cases. But I don't notice a difference in performance or durability...hope that helps - RyanJessie J : By the way the comment by Allison T is actually Jessie JKATHRYN E : It is just different and depends on your preference. We spearfish around rigs for snapper mostly and it is easier to get them off with the break away tip and get back in the water for another quicker.ALLISON T : Yes a break away tip is way better. There are multiple reasons. First with a regular tip when you spear a fish you have all the weight of the spear slinging around causing a big hole in the fish which then makes it more likely to lose the fish. Unlike the break away tip where you only have the weight of the cable and tip. Another thing is it's easier to remove the break away tip from the fish and it just holds the fish better. I have tried both tips and I love the break away tip. We spear fish a lot and have made hundreds of dives I wouldn't use anything other than a break away tip. It's simple and has no mechanical parts to malfunction.
Shopper : I am looking at the Gulf Magnum XHD and the Magnum XHD I was just wondering what muzzle ( Straight or Winged ) is better and why? Also what is the best spear tip for bottom fish? -thanksMICHAEL C : The best spear tip for bottom fish would be a 3 prong paralyzer point. Most guns do not have the option of different muzzles, for guns with 3 bands, they usually come with the winged to accommodate the 3 bands. So it really depends on how many bands you want the gun to have. Both work equally well, they are just slightly different designs.
JASON B : What is the difference between the 4D46GXHD and the 4D46XHD?CECIL S : If i remember rite i think the muzzle was the difference on the gun. I did not get to dive with it this past year so i cant gove alot of feed back. Sorry. The muzzle on gulfmag was the straight and not the wingsCOE P : The GXHD comes rigged with a slip tip to prevent shafts getting bent.MIKE S : Wish I could answer your Question but don't know the answer myself. I have not used the spear gun yet, still hanging in a cruiser I have been building for the last 13 years. I hope to use the gun as well as the boat by this summer if all goes according to plan. Shopper : Could it be used for small (compared to ocean sized fish) fish in lakes? and is it noisy compared to other models?MICHAEL L : I would buy the JBL 38 special for lake fish (and you can use it in the ocean). The xhd gun is heavy, loud, and akward. I love my 38, but the xhd was not the best buy. It is like buying a desert eagle 50 caliber handgun. In retrospect I would rather use a 9mm and just aim better!! I really like Andre guns, but they are more expensive. If you are dead set on the xhd, I will sell you mine for $200 with some extra bands. It is not very noisy and because of its size it's very easy to reload.RICHARD H : My opinion is it would be to large for small fish.JAMES G : I have worn out three of these JBL guns in 35 years of Gulf rig diving. It makes about a 1in hole in the fish so I would not shoot anything below 10 pounds. This gun is very powerful and requires a lot of maintenance like broken shafts, slides and cables. Strictly for larger ocean fish. I upgraded to this one from a smaller one because it is better for larger fish.

Reach out & touch someone.........

Finally got out to use it & found it to have more than sufficient power & range. Actually, a few shots were complete pass thru's on some sizeable fish!!! Everything worked as advertised. I am very pleased.

This is a solidly built gun. I am a mechanical engineer by trade and usually end up modifying or upgrading everthing made nowadays, but not this gun. It it well constructed and well suited for medium to large fish.

At JBL Spear Guns XHD stands for Extra Heavy Duty and they mean it. Thicker alloy barrel, 5/16" (8 mm) hardened stainless shaft, trigger mechanisms are carbide tipped and all models are equipped with 5/8" (15.8 mm) Hi-Mod bands that feature stainless wire wishbones. The XHD is the gun of choice for commercial and hardcore shooters. To these guys it's a tool... not a toy. Three bands and a hardened tip will punch through just about any fish, which is why the Shark Research Institute depends on the XHD for tough jobs like radio tagging 40' (12.2 meter) whale sharks.

The gun body measures 55" (139.7 cm) without shaft. The shaft measures 48" x 5/16" (122 cm x 8 mm). Rugged Gulf Muzzle for more streamlined sweeping. 5/16" (8 mm) heat treated stainless steel shaft with 4" (102mm) tri-cut slip tip designed for large powerful fish in open water. The tips rear fixed barbs cause the point to turn sideways after entering the fish so it will hang on no matter how hard the fight while minimizing damage to your spear shaft. The low-profile, double barbed design with Tri-Cut point allows for pinpoint accuracy penetrating power and dependable deployment. Due to the attached cable removal of the spear point is made easier. Don't trust a once in a lifetime fish to anything else. Tip is made from corrosion resistant hardened 17-4 stainless and features a multi-braid stainless cable in 1/16" (2mm) diameter for long life and durability.

Three 24" x 5/8" (61 cm x 15.8 mm) oversized bands, JBL's unique latex formulation and dip manufacturing process delivers radical modulus strength. The power curve increases as bands are stretched for optimum performance. Special anti-oxidants help protect against harmful U.V. rays, prolonging sling life. Wishbones are 302 stainless wires that provide superior strength and durability. Gun has an integrated float chamber and a 25' (7.6) reach.
