PFD stands for personal flotation device. While PFDs come in many different forms, a life jacket is actually the most common variety. Many water sports enthusiasts use the terms life jacket and PFD interchangeably.
Life Jacket Styles and How They Vary by Use
The best PFD for you depends on your intended activity. The U.S. Coast Guard offers five different category types to help you find the best option for your activities.
Type I
These are the most buoyant PFDs. They’re designed for offshore or remote waters, and they’re often used on ships or during ocean-bound excursions.
Type II
Often called nearshore PFDs, Type II life jackets are suitable for calmer inland waters where quick rescue is likely. They come in various styles, including vests and horseshoe shapes.
Type III

Type IV
