Scuba Drysuit Buying Guide
Switching to a drysuit enhances the diving experience significantly, even in temperate waters, by providing superior thermal insulation and protection from environmental elements. Unlike wetsuits, drysuits keep divers completely dry, maintaining stable body temperatures and enabling comfortable, longer dives. They are versatile for multi-season use, adaptable to varying water conditions, and offer enhanced safety and buoyancy control. This makes drysuits a valuable investment for divers seeking to extend their diving season year-round and enjoy more comfortable, safer dives in diverse environments.

How to Choose the Right Drysuit
First, let’s look at what makes a good drysuit, so that you can make the right decision.
A drysuit's versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of water temperatures, from cooler periods in temperate climates to unexpectedly cold currents. Divers can adjust their thermal undergarments to match the specific conditions, ensuring optimal comfort year-round.
Drysuits are different to wetsuits in that they keep you completely dry while you’re underwater (if you zip them up properly!). The drysuit also connects to the air tank and you can add a little air to the suit to stop it from squeezing you as you descend. Adjusting buoyancy with a drysuit can be a little tricky at first but you soon get used to it. It’s more than worth it for the extra warmth.
Just like finding the perfect mask, it’s all about the fit. Finding a drysuit that fits you well is important. If the suit is too big, it can leak or feel baggy and cause drag. Too small, and it will feel tight and uncomfortable while you dive.
Types of Drysuits
There are two main types of drysuits: membrane (or trilaminate) and neoprene. The membrane suits are thin and have less insulation. They are designed just to keep you dry and you can choose drysuit undergarments to wear underneath to stop you from getting cold.
Meanwhile, neoprene drysuits are very thick wetsuits. They are warmer and heavier than membrane suits and are more streamlined. Both styles will have water-tight zips or seals to keep the water out while you dive.
When buying a drysuit, consider how many pockets it has and where they are positioned on the suit. Also, make sure you look at zipper placement and whether or not you will require a P-valve.
